VOLUME 89. No. 4. János evangéliuma 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3,16

A békétlenség szinte életelemünkké vált. Elég a másik léte, mássága, különbözősége... Sokszor szánt szándékkal keressük a békétlenséget, a harcot. Ebben a szolgálatban van a keresztyének egysége (akik most ünneplik Krisztus születését). 3 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ Christmas message in 2010 To the members, elders and pastors of the congregations of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America Dearly beloved Sisters and Brothers, 3. oldal During the holidays, around Christmas we greet each other: Merry Christmas! This holiday is a mood, a quality, a symbol. It is never merely a fact. As a fact it is a date on the calendar; to the believer it is the anniversary of the Event in human history. We retold this story every year from the kitchen table to the most ornate of pulpits. Like the rest of the Bible, this story never fails to speak to individuals, the church, and the nation no matter our circumstances or condition. In the last few years and now near Christmas, we find ourselves in difficult economic times. Two thousand years ago, Joseph and Mary and all those who lived during that time, were in the same bad situation: political difficulty, personal distress, prophetic discernment, promised deliverance, private delight. We have to focus our attention mainly on how the saints of God should handle difficult times, and how we in our situation today. "And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn." Luke 2:7. The political situation, the Roman destruction and control of the people, new tax law, changes in leadership and changes in monetary policies threatened the well-being and the confidence of the people. This represented a huge change in the way of life of the people (Luke 2:1-3) Today, we find similar circumstances. We who claim to be God's people and claim to trust in Him, now find that our way of life is threatened by change. Have we really been trusting in God, or were we really trusting in the only way of life we have ever really known? God can upset the "status quo" and has done so on many occasions. World wars, natural disasters, catastrophes, bad leadership, depressions, and many other things have torn Christians from their beds of ease and trusted us into a new and frightening set of circumstances. Joseph and Mary had a special secret, their unborn child was the long-awaited Messiah. They were certainly the "chosen" of God to be entrusted as parents of the Son of God. Both of them had obeyed the heavenly vision and followed God's instructions. No one would blame them if they had expected (Luke 2:4-6) a little "special treatment" from the Father for this great task that lay before them. But no special treatment came. It is amazing to think of how today's Christians expect to be spared from the repercussions of recession and economic hardship. If God let Mary and Joseph suffer in such a time as Christ's birth, what should be our expectations today? Joseph and Mary were poor. The Roman occupation had ground the Jewish people to poverty. Joseph and the pregnant Mary didn't find available rooms and most likely no money to pay for one. Mary and Joseph were without friends on this journey. When we consider the trials and tribulations that this godly couple endured, one is tempted to ask, "Why did God allow this to befall them?" Don't forget: God's thoughts are not our thoughts. As we negotiate our way through these times, we must remember that God never promised to save us from troubles, but to help us in our troubles. In the Christmas story we can see the fulfillment of prophecies. (Luke 2:25-39) The angel had prophesied of the coming Messiah. The wise men from the East also followed the prophetic star to Christ's birthplace. And do not forget Anna and Simeon, the old people in the temple who trusted God that they would see the Messiah before they died. The times in which we live also give proof to fulfilled prophecy. Just watch the whole world! Just like in the story of the first Christmas, people go about their daily routines oblivious to the fulfillment of prophecy in their midst! God was working in the world, bringing the political and economic conditions to a point that would be conducive to the Coming of the Messiah. (Luke 2:10-11) The promise was made that a Savior had come! While nothing outwardly changed in the world that day, a great event had happened. As we search the history books, the taxation of Caesar Augustus rates barely a mention. The birth of a backwoods Jewish child in the little town of Bethlehem gets no mention at all. But human life had changed that day! And so it is today! The salvation that was made available in the First Coming of Christ is still available today. You won't see it mentioned in the New York Times or the Washington Post. You won't hear it spoken on Wall Street or Hollywood. The leaders of the world, for the most part, ignore the salvation of Christ just as they did in the First Century. There is deliverance for humanity! There is a cure for sin! There is a key to a better and more fulfilling life! It is Christ! Just as it was in Bethlehem long ago! Mary and Joseph had just gone through a most traumatic experience. The birth of her first child had occurred away from her family and home in a stable, and she was surrounded by shepherds, angels, and, later, wise men from the East. Mary "kept" these things, that is, she kept it all in her mind lest it be forgotten. (Luke 2:19) The word means to preserve a thing. And notice the word "pondered." This means to bring together in one's mind, converse with one's self about a thing. Each of these great events in her life were put into her mind's picture book, to be taken out and considered in her quiet time. We have all had experiences with the Lord, prayers answered, truths given, principles observed, that we should ponder in our hearts! My point in bringing this message is to compare the time of the first Christmas with today. We are humans no different than those in that day. God is working in lives today just as yesterday. We can see His fingerprints on the world stage, moving and working His will. We should not expect to get a "free pass" from the trials and tribulations of the future. God has a plan for each of us, but that plan will be carried out with history as a backdrop. We will not be saved "out of" recession, depression, war, or famine. We may be called upon to carry out His work in the midst of it, as did Joseph and Mary in Old Bethlehem! With Christ in our heart, members, elders, pastors of the congregations of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America, let us make our service and labor for our family, for our church, for our nation. The best we can do is to give ourselves fully to the experience, accepting and embracing the divine, as Mary did, in all its richness and power. Merry Christmas for all of us. 2010, Christmas With brotherly love in Christ, Sandor Szabo, Bishop Frank Kiraly, Chief Elder

MAGYAR EGYHÁZ The reason the Word of God became man from the treatise of Irenaeus, A.D. For this reason the Word of God became man and the Son of God became the son of man in order that man, being mingled with the Word of God and being granted adoption should become the son of God. In no other way could we have received incorruptibility and immortality, without ourselves first being united to them. How could we be made one with incorruptibility and mortality by immortality and so enable us to receive adoption as sons. This same Son of God, therefore, who is our Lord and the existing Word of the Father is also son of man. He was born like other men, born of Mary, who was herself of human stock and a member of the human race, and so he became the son of man. It was for this reason that the Lord gave a sign here below and in heaven above that man had not asked for. Man had neither hoped that a virgin could be with child and bear a son, although she was a virgin; nor that this child would be God with us, coming down to the earth below in search of the sheep that was lost (which he himself had made) and once again ascending on high and offering in trust to the Father the man he had found. This same Lord himself became the first-fruits of the resurrection of man, so that the resurrection of the head should mean the resurrection of the rest of the body, and that every man alive should rise again on completion of the time of the punishment, which his disobedience had earned. For the body in its varied joints and ligaments grows up and is strengthened by God s aid, and each of the members has its appropriate fitting place in the body. The Father has many mansions in the same way as there are many members in the body. When, therefore, man fell, God was geneours in mercy, since he foresaw the victory which would be his through the agency of the Word. For because his power was made perfect in weakness, he displayed the kindness of God and the greatness of his power. God's Promises Are Held Out to Us by His Son from a discourse on the Psalms by Augustine, bishop, A.D. God established a time for his promises and a time for their fulfillment. The time for promises was in the time of the prophets, until John the Baptist; from John until the end is the time of fulfillment. God, who is faithful, put himself in our debt, not by receiving anything but by promising so much. A promise was not sufficient for him; he chose to commit himself in writing as well, as it were making a contract of his promises. He wanted us to be able to see the way in which his promises were redeemed when he began to discharge them. And so the time of the prophets was, as we have often said, the foretelling of the promises. 5. oldal He promised eternal salvation, everlasting happiness with the angels, an immortal inheritance, endless glory, the joyful vision of his face, his holy dwelling in heaven, and after resurrection from the dead no further fear of dying. This is as it were his final promise, the goal of all our striving. When we reach it, we shall ask for nothing more. But as to the way in which we are to arrive at our final goal, he has revealed this also, by promise and prophecy. He has promised men divinity, mortals immortality, sinners justification, the poor a rising to glory. But, brethren, because God s promises seemed impossible to men - equality with the angels in exchange for mortality, corruption, poverty, weakness, dust and ashes - God not only made a written contract with men, to win their belief but also established a mediator of his good faith, nor a prince or angel or archangel, but his only Son. He wanted, through his Son, to show us and give us the way he would lead us to the goal he has promised. It was not enough for God to make his son our guide to the way; he made him the way itself, that you might travel with him as leader, and by him as the way. Therefore, the only Son of God was to come among men, to take the nature of men, and in this nature to be born as a man. He was to die, to rise again, to ascend into heaven, to sit at the right hand of the Father, and to fulfill his promises among the nations, and after that to come again, to exact now what he had asked for before, to separate those deserving his anger form those deserving his mercy, to execute his threats against the wicked, and to reward the just as he had promises. All this had therefore to be prophesied, foretold, and impressed on us as an event in the future, in order that we might wait for it in faith, not find it a sudden and dreadful reality. When Christ comes, God will be seen by men From a treatise Against Heresies by Irenaeus, A.D. There is one God, who by his word and wisdom created all things and set them in order. His word is our Lord Jesus Christ, who in this last age became man among men to unite end and beginning, that is, man and God. The prophets, receiving the gift of prophecy from this same Word, foretold his coming in the flesh, which brought about the union and communion between God and man ordained by the Father. From the beginning the word of God prophesied that God would be seen by men and would live among them on earth; he would speak with his own creation and be present to it, bringing it salvation and being visible to it. He would free us from the hands of all who hate us, that is, form the universal spirit of sin, and enable us to serve him in holiness and justice all our days. Man was to receive the Spirit of God and so to attain to the glory of the Father. The prophets, foretold that God would be seen by men. As the Lord himself says: Blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God. In his greatness and inexpressible glory no one can see God and live, for the Father is beyond our comprehension. But in his love and generosity and omnipotence he allows even this to those who love him, that is, even to see God, as the prophets foretold. For what is impossible to men is possible to God. By his own powers man cannot see God; yet God will be seen by

6. oldal MAGYAR EGYHÁZ men because he wills it. He will be seen by those he chooses, at the time he chooses, and in the way he chooses, for God can do all things. He was seen of old through the Spirit in prophecy; he is seen through the Son by our adoption as his children, and he will be seen in the kingdom of heaven in his own being as the Father. The Spirit prepares man to receive the Son of God, the Son leads him to the Father, and the Father, freeing him from change and decay, bestows the eternal life that comes to everyone from seeing God. As those who see light are in the light sharing its brilliance, so those who see God are in God sharing his glory, and that glory gives them life. To see God is to share in life. The Real Meaning of Christmas What the Incarnation means for us What is the true meaning of Christmas? Every year as the Christmas season comes around, we hear a great deal about the real meaning of Christmas. But it is not always clear just what that real meaning is. For some people, the true meaning of Christmas is the warmth and love of our families, a celebration of the home. For others, the real meaning of Christmas is love for other people Peace on earth, good will toward men. And of course, many Christians think the true meaning of Christmas is that it is the birthday of Jesus. All these things, and especially the celebration of Jesus birth, have something to do with Christmas. But the full meaning of Christmas is something bigger bigger than the love of our families or good will toward men, even bigger than remembering the birthday of Jesus. For when we celebrate Christmas, we are celebrating one of the greatest truths of our faith the incarnation. We are not just celebrating the fact that some 2,000 years ago Jesus of Nazareth was born; we are celebrating the far greater fact that in Jesus of Nazareth God himself became man. Most of us are familiar with the word incarnation and know that it has something to do with Jesus being both God and man. But many of us have not reflected on the full meaning of this doctrine and on the consequences it has for us. Among Christians today you can hear a lot of strange things said about the incarnation. One common idea is that the Word became flesh to show us that we really ought to be flesh. The meaning of the incarnation, according to this way of thinking, is that we ought to be as much flesh as we can possibly be. I do not know about everyone else, but I at least do not feel that I need to become any more flesh. Nor does anyone else I know really need to become more flesh. We human beings were born flesh. We do not need to do anything in order to become flesh whether flesh in the good sense or in the bad. Some of the early Christian teachers in the Greekspeaking world spoke of the incarnation in quite different terms that I believe come much closer to what the scripture itself says. They said that the Word became flesh God became man so that we might become God. That is a spectacular statement and could easily be misunderstood. But compared to the modern notion, I think it gets us a lot closer to the truth. God did not become flesh so that we could learn to be flesh. God became flesh so that we might become more like God. Jesus did not come into the world in order to tell us, You re all great just as you are. Just do more of the same. Jesus came to change us. He came to give us a life that we could not achieve of our own flesh. How does the incarnation make us more like God? To begin with, we should understand that the incarnation is not simply a call to imitate God. The Word did not become flesh just to give us a model of godlike behavior. Of course, if we are going to become like God we have to imitate certain elements of God s character as they are revealed to us in Jesus his love, patience, strength, perseverance, and so on. But the incarnation means more for us than that. The truth is that God became man in order to make us godlike. He came to give us something that would make us like himself. God became man because we did not have it in ourselves, in the weakness of our flesh, to become like God. St. Paul explained what the incarnation means for us when he wrote to the Colossians, For in Christ the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have come to fullness of life in him who is the head of all rule and authority (Col. 2:9-10). In other words, everything that is in God, the fullness of deity, is in Jesus of Nazareth. And now we, through Jesus, have come into the fullness of the life of God. We have been filled with what is in Jesus. Not that we become the second person of the Trinity incarnate; not that we have the omniscience or omnipotence of God. There is a difference between us and Jesus, a difference we know only too well. Yet Jesus shares with us what he himself is. He shares with us his divine life. We may find all this easier to understand in terms of another idea the New Testament gives us: God became man in Jesus Christ, and as a result of that incarnation God has poured out his Holy Spirit on us to give us the power actually to live the life of God. He has poured out his Spirit so that there may be a body of people, the body of Christ, who truly live like God himself. Other people should be able to see us and say, Here is a type of human being different from all other human beings. Here is a kind of life that no other human has. What they should be able to see in us is the very life of God himself. The Word of God becoming flesh and dwelling among us The Gospel of John states these same truths in another way: The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1:9-13). That passage describes the incarnation the Word of God becoming flesh and dwelling among us. He was not recognized by most people, the passage tells us. He was rejected even by many of his own chosen people. But we who do receive him receive a new life, a life as children of God. We have been born in a different way, not by natural means but by the Spirit of God. We have been born with a life that puts us on a different plane than our natural life. That is an extraordinary truth. How many times have we heard those first verses of the gospel of John? How many times have we heard about God becoming man and our becoming children of God? It is all so big that we almost stop thinking about it. If we do think about it, we think of it as something that happens in some spiritual world, not here on earth where we live our normal life. Here we have enough to do, just trying to get dinner on the table for the family, or trying to get to work in the morning, or wondering when to do the Christ-

MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 7. oldal mas shopping, or how to get the car fixed so we can visit the family on Christmas Day. Maybe, we think, being children of God in the midst of all this just means that we should be a little kinder to our wife, or stop getting irritated with the kids, or try to relate to our boss better. It is easy to end up thinking that Jesus came just to tell us that we need to behave a little bit better than we are naturally inclined to behave. Yet that is not what Jesus came to do. He did not come just to tell us to become better than we thought we had to be. He came so that we can become better than we thought we could be. God s purpose in becoming man was to give us his own life, making us better than we ever thought we could be. It would be easy to misunderstand what it means to say that Jesus came to make us godlike and give us a life different from other human beings. We could take that as meaning we become something more than human. I think it is more accurate to say that we become fully human. If we are to be truly human, if we are to be all that a human being is meant to be, we need the life of God. Our condition as we are born into this world is actually subhuman. That is not a slight on our parents; it simply reflects the fact that the human race itself is under the power of sin. The present natural condition of humanity means living according to sin, living in the flesh as Paul used the word flesh (see Rom. 7:13-25). In the image and likeness of God That was not, however, the condition in which God made us. When God made Adam, he did not make a sinful man. He did not intend his creation to live the way most people live now. He made us to live a life like his own; he made us like himself. That is what scripture means when it says that human beings are made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27). Human beings are supposed to be something a lot greater than what most of us are right now. Some Jewish rabbis used to say that Adam was created with the glory of God upon him, and that when he fell he lost the glory of God. The New Testament teaches that in Jesus, the glory of God was restored to humanity. You can look at Jesus of Nazareth and see what God is like. As Paul says many times in the New Testament, He is the image of the invisible God (Col. 1:l5). Jesus wants to share God s glory with us. He wants to glorify us so that here and now we can start looking like God himself because we live the life of God himself. He wants to restore in us the image of God. Christmas is not simply a celebration of the birthday of Jesus. That may seem a rather strange idea, since Christmas is the feast of the Nativity, the birth of Jesus. What I mean, however, is that in celebrating Christmas we do not just look back to what happened 2,000 years ago when Jesus entered our world; we also look forward to what will happen when Jesus comes again to complete the work of the incarnation. Obviously, none of us have yet achieved the fullness of the divine life Jesus came to give us. We can experience much of our new identity as children of God right now, in our life on this earth. But there is a great deal more we will not experience until the Lord comes again to judge the living and the dead and to establish his kingdom. On that day, what we truly are will be revealed, and as John says, We shall be like him (l John 3:2). It will be manifest that we are truly sons and daughters of God, bearing his image and likeness, bearing his glory. Everything that was to be accomplished by Jesus becoming incarnate will be accomplished. Everything God wants the human race to be, we will be. On that day the true and everlasting feast of Christmas will begin.

8. oldal MAGYAR EGYHÁZ HUNGARIAN REFORMED CHURCH IN AMERICA GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING LIGONIER, PA November 19, 2010 BISHOP S REPORT Bishop Demeter, Chief Elder Beke, Deans, Pastors, Chief Elders, Members of the General Assembly, Gests! Greetings to the members of the Bishop s Council of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America and those in attendance. On behalf of the congregations of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America, I ask God's blessing on the labor and service of the General Assembly meeting. I especially thank the Bethlen Home for its continued support, so that we can hold our meeting here, where as always we gathered as brothers. We thank the Reverend Imre A. Bertalan, Pastor and Executive Director for his service and true Hungarian hospitality and those Bethlen employees who provided help for this event. It is my pleasure to greet everybody at this very important meeting of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America. In the last four years I was honored to be the leader of our Synod with Chief Elder Beke. I would like to greet everyone with the words of the Apostle Paul from the 2.Corinthians 5:14-15: We are ruled by the love of Christ, now that we recognize that one man died for everyone, which means that they all, share in his death. He died for all, so that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but only for him who died and was raised to life for their sake. I put this word on to your heart to say always: We are ruled by the love of Christ I want your hearts to be encouraged and united in love for our beloved denomination by the Lord Jesus Christ. At the General Assembly of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America, Rt.Rev.Andor Demeter, Honorary Bishop greets the meeting Our progress is determined in part by our past. In the last 85 years, we Hungarian Reformed congregations have lived out of a truth: in Christ Jesus we are one. Since the beginning we have voiced the validity of our mission, to pass the Word of God to our Hungarian brethren. Today one description of our way of sharing that good news is: we are Hungarian Reformed, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. God is calling us to him, in this broken and injured world, we do have to option to choose life. Choosing life is attitude. It s prayerfully focusing on God s blessings; it s deciding to live according to God s will. Choosing life is also action. It s caring for the body. For individuals, this means attention to exercise the faith. For church, caring for the body, means attention to the covenant by which we are related to God and each other. This is our mission and our duty as Hungarian Reformed Churches. In recent decades many pastors have seen their congregations decline precipitously. This has occacioned a great deal of hand-wringing at church council meetings as well as at denominational meetings. We are always talking about church growth. The church growth is also a movement in the last two-three decades, but this movement was not making churches larger but planting more churches. Over time the emphasis moved toward providing technical solutions to the problem of congregational decline. One of the biggest theologian Bonhoeffer found his American colleagues distressingly cavalier about the gospel and overly impressed with technique. If there is a common American failing, it is this. Pastors, lay leaders, members, all find themselves looking for the quick fix the silver bullet to address whatever crisis the church faces. America s strogly pragmatic, problem-solving orientation is impatient of theological reflection and unwilling to endure long-term solutions. We heard about exiting new programs the latest expertise running the church more like a business are popular phrases in the mind of every church leader. As resources dwindle and congregational grumbling increases, pastors are tempted to try anything to make things better. As you know my vision is church planting. In this bed situation, when we are witnessing of weak congragations, I am convinced that one of the most effective ways of extending the Good News of Jesus Christ is the rapid planting of new mission congregations in the big cities around our churches in the Hungarian communities. New churches require a great deal of effort and investment of time, energy, love and faith from pastors and lay persons alike. This is a wonderful school of discipleship for all involved. The most serious problem with declining churches is not lack of resources, a changing neighborhood, or even incompetent leadership. The most serious problem is lack of clarity on mission. For many churches the mission was established years ago when Christendom was fully operational and one could assume that a large percentage of people in any given community were churchgoers. The mission then was to provide these people opportunities to worship, learn, and serve the community. These are good things. But what happens when Christendom is over? What happens when a smaller percentage of people attend church? What happens when the mission to serve the already churched is outdated? We have to know that religion declined not because it was refuted, but because it became irrelevant, dull, oppressive, insipid. When faith is completely replaced by creed, - worship by discipline, - love by habit; when the crisis of today is ignored because of the splendor of the past; when faith becomes an heirloom rather than a living fountain; when religion speaks only in the name of authority rather than with the voice of compassion, its message becomes meaningless. We can no longer assume that everybody is a Christian and the community is living out values derive from the Gospel. We need to return to one of the features of the Apostolic Age wher the front door of the church is a door into mission territory. The Christian church has always been a missionary organization. It has always had good news to proclaim and to live. The mission is obscured when the church is at ease in Zion. But when the mission is clarified and vigorously pursued, growth, health, life are possible. The Good News, of course, is about Jesus Christ. It is about the early church s insistence that something powerful had been set loose on the earth through his death and resurrection. To proclaime the Good News of Jesus Christ is not just to seek adherents to a

MAGYAR EGYHÁZ new philosophy, but to offer people fresh, new life. It is to offer people grace, health and joy. Church growth that means anything finds its meaning and direction not from technique, however helpful it may be, but from the gospel. The gospel contemplates and intends both individual and corporate transformation. It calls the church to proclaime, through Jesus Christ crucified and raised, the forgiveness of sins as well as the reordering of communities. It calls for congregational and denominational leaders who wrestle long and hard with the Scriptures, the theological reflections of the past, and the new challenges of post-modernity to proclaime that gospel with integrity and love. Growth will come not from a new program but from a new mission. But this mission is not really a new; it is as old as Galilee and as fresh as Easter morning. Discussion between the bishop and pastors during the meeting of the General Assembly 9. oldal In my information as Bishop of the Synod, I would like to guide your attention to a few important issues. In my service as Bishop of our Church, I have represented our Synod at many church and social events in California. During my stay in Hungary I attended the Doctor s College of the Reformed Church in Hungary, where I greeted the participants on behalf of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America. I have met with Church leaders along with Hungarian bishops Bölcskei Gusztáv, Szabó István, Jozsef Csomos, Jozsef Steinbach, the Subkarpatian bishop Zán Fábián Sándor, ecumenical officer of the Synod Tamás Bertalan, officers of the Synod, president of the Bible Alliance Sipos Ete Álmos pastor, and other persons to discuss about bilateral relations of our two churches. I have taken part and held services in congregations. I have represented the Hungarian Reformed Church at the annual meeting of the Consultative Synod of the Hungarian Reformed Churches on Nagyvárad, where I have been elected as Managing President of the Synod. I had the opportunity to attend the Diaspora conference in Budapest in November 2008, and meet the leaders of every Hungarian church from around the world. This was possibly the first event that brought together and facilitated the elders of the Hungarian churches outside of Hungary. The conference addressed many questions and forwarded our collective plans to the mother church. I have taken part and held services in congregations in Hungary. I held church services, baptism, wedding and funeral services or brief talk in Hungary at the reformed congregations of Üllő, Hajdúnánás, Budapest-Klauzál tér, Csákvár, Hajdúböszörmény, Budapest, Debrecen, Nyíregyháza, Cigánd. I attended 3 times at the meeting of the Constituting Synod of the Hungarian Reformed Churches in Debrecen, Balatonszárszó, Balatonfenyves. I represented our church at the Calvin Synod UCC yearly meeting 3 times. I was in Ligonier,PA five times for various Bethlen Home and other church meetings. I also represented our church at the anniversary celebrations of the Grace Hungarian Reformed Church in Tarzana,CA and Hollywood,CA. On May 14, 2009 at the Special Bishop's Council meeting, our church has officially voted to join the Hungarian Reformed Church. At the historic meeting of the Constituting Synod, the Rev.Dr.Attila Kocsis, Dean and I represented our church and declared our intention to join the Hungarian Reformed Church with our signatures. The decision has to be confirmed by the today s General Assembly of course. We become the center of attention and everybody would like to learn the multifaceted nature of our American-Hungarian reformed service in two separate denomination. Our history and formation is known, along with separation and the current efforts for reuniting. We spoke many times about the issue in small steps but the decades long talks resulted in definite progress. I would like to list these achievements. The Calvin Anniversary year was opened jointly on the East-Coast at the two New York congregations in Oct of 2008, Bishop Bölcskei providing the service. As we proposed many congregation hold remembrances of this anniversary in the last year, and the closing service was held on the Reformation Day, October 31, 2009, at the Free Magyar Reformed Church in Ontario, California. In honor of the Calvin anniversary, the two church bodies will edit a joint publication during the year The elders of the two church bodies came to agreement and established a Ministerial Qualifying Committee to allow for better job placement for the pastors arriving from abroad. There are discussions about to hold a joint Synod meeting, where both entities can discuss issues related to service, mission and church politics. Thru a common decision both church bodies were represented at the Diaspora Conference in Budapest, on November 17-18, These steps are greatly responsible for the possibility of the American Hungarian reformed unity. During my Bishop s visitations I always informed our congregations of the possibility of this union, which our leaders endorse and promote as well. The promotion and support of the Hungarian reformed union is a mission and a duty of all reformed Hungarians. This work was taken on fifteen years ago by the World Federation of the Hungarian Reformed Churches and the Consultative Synod of the Hungarian Reformed Churches and is being continued by the General Convent of the Carpathian Basin. We were glad to attend the 2008 Diaspora Conference in Hungary, which pointed out how dispersed we are in the world and how little we know of each other. We need to encourage each other, pray for one another, because we are all one in Christ. We have waited a long and were finally able to experience the embrace of the mother church on May 22, 2009 in Debrecen, Hungary. During my service I have visited congregations, and held services at the Eastern Classis congregations: Bethlehem,PA, Carteret,NJ, Miami,FL, New Brunswick,NJ, New York,NY, Perth Amboy,NJ, Roebling,NJ, Staten Island, NY; Trenton,NJ, Washington,D.C. I was unable to visit the Poughkeepsie,NY and Rochester,NY congregations. At the Central Classis congragations: Chicago,IL, Duquesne,PA, McKeesport,PA, Toronto,ON; Win-

Not visited: Vancouver,DC. With God s help, I would like to continue my service at the Hungarian Reformed Church in America and would like to visit every congregations in the future. In order to achieve my goals I would like to ask for the support of the pastors, officers and congregations of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America. Due to his appointment in the Calvin Synod, the Bishop's Council has accepted the resignation of Rt.Rev.Stefan M.Török, from the office of the Ecclesiastical Secretary. Rev.Ferenc Varga, Dean was appointed to continue the duties of the Ecclesiastical Secretary. May God bless his service. We thank Rt.Rev.Stefan M. Török for his many decade long services in our denomination. Glory be to God for his help and blessings in our denomination in the last four years. We served him faithfully in our congregations within three Classes. Eastern Classis: 15 congregations Atlanta,GA: New mission congregation with a great improvement by the service of Rev. Washington,DC: The congregation served by Rev.Judit Mayer and Rev.László Petró. There is a new associate pastor, Rev.Peter Pal Czegledi from Hungary. I report with great thanks that within the Eastern Classis four new mission congregations have started. We have to accept that this is the future of our church. Preaching points are all around as mission congregations. In August 2010, Dean Kocsis resigned from his Dean s position due to a call for a government job in Hungary. The newly elected Chief Elder Mr. Frank Kiraly and the Treasurer of the Synod Mrs.Szilvia Russell Central Classis 6 congregations: Allen Park,MI: Rev.Ferenc Varga leads the biggest congregation in our denomination. Chicago,IL: By the leadership of Rev.Andras Balogh the congregation asked its admission to our denomination. Duquesne,PA: Rev.Dr.Jozsef Posta serves the congregation in the last decades. Interesting to note that 50 years ago at one of the Central Classis congregation in Duquesne,PA, the first bishop of our denomination Rt.Rev.Zoltán Béky was elected, until then only the Senior Dean főesperes was the highest title and office. McKeesport.PA: Rev.Dr.Daniel Borsay leads the congregation. Growing church with new members from the American neighborhood. Toronto,ON: Rev.Eva Mezo the pastor of the small congregation. Windsor,ON: Rev.Gyorgy Nagy, pastor of the congregation has retired, meanwhile a new pastor has arrived from Germany, whose employment permit was denied by the Canadian government. The congregation is still looking for a new pastor. After a long waiting the Windsor congregation has a new pastor, Rev.Zoltan Lizik from Cegléd, Hungary. In Windsor,ONT there were many problems because some church council members who served at the church for many years back, criticized the new pastor for his new leadership and ministry. The situation was very critical, but most of the church members supported the new pastor in his faithful service. The situation is consolidated. Western Classis 13 congregations: Austin,TX: New mission congregation, needs a pastor to held their services at the facilities of the Presbyterian Seminary. Dallas,TX: Rev.Ferenc Gaal left the mission congregation and for few years the sevices were stoped. Beginning of 2010, Rev.Zoltan Kelemen from Clevelad started to hold monthly services with attendees.

MAGYAR EGYHÁZ Denver,CO: One of the fathful mission congregation with the leadership of Ms.Iona Apay Chief elder. Hollywood,CA: Rev Balint nagy and the Church Council work together for the benefit of their congregation. Honolulu,HI: The smallest mission congregation on the Hawaiian islands. Pray for them. Houston,TX: Growing mission congregation, with a great organizer, Dr.Rozsa Lapis. Ontario,CA: 50th Anniversary with a beautiful program recorded by the Hungarian Duna TV. Phoenix,AZ: After good start with the new pastor, the congregation built its decision on the Constitution and By-Laws of our church, terminated the pastoral relationship of Rev.Dr.Sandor Tenke, who started legal action against the congregation and some elders. The Dean s office and the Bishop s office both dismissed his appeal. The decision of the Dean needs to reinforce by the General Assembly of the Synod. Portland,OR: New mission congregation with mixed plans to ask pastors from other Hungarian denominations to hold services. San Diego,CA: Small congregation with faithful members. Services in every month. San Francisco,CA: Rev.Gabor Magyari-Kope and the congregation serve together in peace. Seattle,WA: Mission congregation, served by ministers from our denomination and by Adel Nemes religious teacher with the authorization of the Bishop. Vancuover,B.C. Rev.Lajos Fabian the pastor, who serves faithfully at the congregation. The Western Classis has elected its Dean Rev.Balint Nagy. Its important to recognize the seven mission congregations in the Western Classis: Seattle,WA, Denver,CO, Houston,TX, Dallas,TX, Honolulu,TX, Austin,TX, Portland,OR. I am very happy to report with thanks to God that the average attendance at the Denver, Houston and Seattle congregations are people in every church services. I ask God to give them strength so they can continue to fight our battles and so that their efforts may come to result for the glory of God. It is also important that after the Holy Scripture and our Confessions, we use and obey our Church s By-Laws and regulations. Few years ago at the Bishop s Council meeting in New Brunswick,NJ, it was categorically stated that our By-Laws have to be followed and respected. In the next four years I will make it fundamental part of my service to enforce and uphold our By- Laws and regulations. I would like to inform everybody of the status of the Magyar Egyház-Magyar Church publication. As Editor in Chief, I inform you that Zsolt Demeter, Editor of the Magyar Egyház- Magyar Church with reference to his personal activity has resigned from his position in Unfortunately technical difficulties surfaced during the editing process and Rev.Attila Tobias was appointed by the Bishop s Council to take this job. After my computer problems finally I was able to edit the remaining issues of the Magyar Egyhaz-Magyar Church until today. Three volumes of the past due editions of the Magyar Egyház-Magyar Church newspaper were edited. The next issue will be published and sent it to the congregations until the coming Christmas. However, the old issue - that the pastors are not contributing materials for the newspaper - is still a problem, making the work of the editor harder than it has to be. I ask for your understanding and ask everyone to continuously support the quarterly publication despite these difficulties, and that everyone send in their subscription dues and send 11. oldal Mrs.Piroska Godinek, Chief Elder, Windsor, ON Mrs.Iren Püsök, Church Council member, Ontario, CA Ms.Renáta Elekes, Newly Elected Controller HRCA, Ontario, CA articles, photos and sermons to the editorial office. Thank you for your continued support and help. The Ministerial Qualifying Committee accepted Rev.Judit Mayer and Rev.András Balogh pastors. God bless their services. I also find it important to support the Bethlen Home in Ligonier,PA and the Hungarian Reformed Federation in America in Washington,DC. In the last four years we hold our meetings in Ligonier,PA. Our thanks go out to the Bethlen Home for their hospitality. The Youth Camp was a success in the last four years. Thank for the service of Mr.Gabor Csapo, Chief Elder of the Trenton,NJ congregation. May God s bless follow their work. Christ has to be the center of our service, he determines our service, let him help us manifest our ideas. Every condition is present for us to serve successfully. We have churches that our forefathers have built. We have financial difficulties, but who doesn t? Let us not forget that God will always take care of us. Most congregations have local pastors, who serve faithfully, along with the elected officials. And the most important condition is always present: God s grace, which is endless and empowering. We only have to take advantage of this and everything will be solved. I thank my colleagues for supporting my work and services in the last four year. Mr.Anthony C. Beke, Chief Elder, Rt.Rev.Ferenc Varga, Ecclesiastical Secretary and Dean, Dr.Zoltán Mester, Lay Secretary, Mrs.Szilvia Russell, Treasurer, Mr.Károly Okos, Controller, Rev.Dr.Attila Kocsis, Rev.Balint Nagy, Deans and every other officer for their faithful service. And the biggest thank and appreciation is to my beloved wife Zsoka. Thank for her support, her patience and unending love to be in the service of God. Thank you Zsoka. I wish God s blessing for the life and service of the pastors, elders of our Synod. Thank you and God bless all of you and God bless the Hungarian Reformed Church in America I thank the General Assembly for its attention and sincerely propose the acknowledgement of my report. 14 14. oldal MAGYAR EGYHÁZ The Meaning of the Advent Wreath A most Advent wreaths use three colors purple, pink, and white. However, some may use blue in place of the purple. 1st Candle (purple) THE PROPHECY CANDLE or CANDLE OF HOPE We can have hope because God is faithful and will keep the promises made to us. Our hope comes from God. And again, Isaiah says, The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; the Gentiles will hope in him. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:12-13) 2nd Candle (purple) THE BETHLEHEM CANDLE or THE CANDLE OF PREPARATION God kept his promise of a Savior who would be born in Bethlehem. Preparation means to get ready. Help us to be ready to welcome YOU, O GOD! As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one calling in the desert, Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all mankind will see God s salvation. (Luke 3:4-6) 3rd Candle (pink) The Shephard Candle or the Candle of Joy The angels sang a message of JOY! and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests. When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about. (Luke 2:7-15) 4th Candle (purple) The AngleL Candle or the Candle of Love The angles announced the good news of a Savior. God sent his only Son to earth to save us, because he loves us! For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17) 5th Candle (white) Christ Candle The white candle reminds us that Jesus is the spotless lamb of God, sent to wash away our sins! His birth was for his death, his death was for our birth! The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! Have an enjoyable Advent, let prepare of the Lord s coming! Rev.v.Károly G. S tömjén helyett e tömött zsákban Feketéllik a bánatom. Királyaid csillag vezette S nem állta útjuk senkisem. Engem hét falon át hozott hozzád Pirosló mécsem: a hitem. Engem négy éve űz utánad Bús angyalod: a szenvedés. Véresre jártam már a lábam. Fagy járta át a csontomat.

MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 15. oldal What did John Calvin think about Christmas? If one is going to mount an argument based on Reformed tradition, one may as well go back to one of the initial sources of Reformed tradition--john Calvin himself. He approved of Christmas celebrations as long as they were purified from superstitious and idolatrous accretions. Calvin did not condemn the annual celebration of Christmas, Good Friday, Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost. Furthermore, he believed that Reformed churches have the liberty to establish such feast days. In fact, it was Calvin's predecessor in Geneva, Farel, who had banned all such observances in the city. But when Calvin came he convinced them to reinstate the celebration of the five evangelical festivals (Christmas, Good Friday, Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost). Later the Genevan council decided to abolish these observances. Calvin was blamed for this action, even though he had nothing to do with it and he himself objected to the decree. Nevertheless, inflammatory accusations were circulating about Calvin's indefensible rigorism, which forced Calvin to respond. People were accusing him of backing the prohibition against these feasts. Calvin's first response was to write a letter to his friend Haller, a Reformed minister at Berne. His letter makes it very clear that he did not support the city council's decision to ban Christmas celebrations. Calvin wrote: Since my recall [from Strasbourg] I have pursued the moderate course of keeping Christ's birthday as you are used to doing. [The Reformed churches of Berne, Strasbourg, and Zurich celebrated the five evangelical feasts.] There were even extraordinary days of prayer on other days; the shops were shut in the morning, and every one returned to his individual calling after dinner. There were, however, in the meanwhile, certain inflexible individuals who did not comply with the common custom from some perverse malice or other.... Let me say this, that if I had got my choice, I should not have decided in favor of what has now been agreed upon. There is no reason why men should be so much provoked, if we use our liberty as the edification of the church demands. Those of you familiar with his writing will recognize this as classic John Calvin. We can sum up Calvin's position like this: churches have liberty to celebrate these festivals with moderation, as long as the practice will genuinely edify Christian people. Of course, Calvin had serious reservations about the way in which Christmas and other Christian celebrations were conducted in his own day. Late medieval Roman Catholic superstitious and even idolatrous practices often mucked up what might otherwise have been a rather simple and joyous feast of Scripture, hymns, and prayers commemorating the birth of our Lord. If the annual celebration of the incarnation of our Lord could be stripped of late medieval piety's unedifying and silly excesses, Christmas might be observed with moderation and great benefit. Calvin also wrote to Heinrich Bullinger ( ), Zwingli's successor and city pastor of Zurich. In that letter he carefully distances himself from the rash decree of the city fathers in Geneva. Once Bullinger heard that Calvin had not slipped into the cultish repudiation of the great feasts of the church, he was relieved. Bullinger wrote back: You have just given the answer that I expected, my dear brother. For I know that in matters of this sort, where duty is but little heeded, and much ill-will is engendered, you have never been morose. I am anxious, indeed, in such matters, to see that liberty preserved, which I perceive to have flourished in the churches from the very days of the apostles. It is a matter of historical record that some of the churches under Geneva's jurisdiction observed the Lord's Supper on December 25th, even when it did not fall on the Lord's Day. And whatever one makes of the ambiguous record that remains of the complex political and ecclesiastical struggles over the church calendar in Geneva during Calvin's time, one thing at least is clear from the record of Calvin's preaching schedule. On the major feasts days, like Christmas, he interrupted his normal practice of preaching through books of the Bible in order to preach on passages and themes related to those feasts. My point is not to elevate Calvin to the level of a doxological litmus test. Just because Calvin did it, doesn't mean we should. But when the anti-christmas crusaders cry "Reformed Tradition! Presbyterian Tradition!" I reply: What Reformed tradition? Which Reformers? What Presbyterians? Which Reformed theologians? If you want to appeal to the Reformed tradition, at least be honest about the diversity of opinions held on this subject. Yes, certain Scottish Presbyterians opposed Christmas and all annual celebrations. One of the most referenced is George Gillespie's A Dispute Against the English-Popish Ceremonies, Obtruded Upon the Church of Scotland (1637). But there are all sorts of issues that called forth Gillespie's polemic that do not apply to most of our Reformed churches today. Neither the Church of England nor the Roman Catholic Church seeks to impose unwanted ceremonies on our churches. Moreover, Protestant churches are able to celebrate Christmas without all the superstitious paraphernalia that clung to the festival in the 16th and 17th centuries. We don't say a mass, pray to any saints, or make Christmas "a holy day of obligation." Abstaining from celebrating these feasts was for some Scots and Reformed English of that day a way of distinguishing themselves from the hated Romanists and the persecuting establishment of the Church of England. The bottom line is that our Reformed tradition is divided on this issue, and the divide is by no means down the middle. The majority of Reformed churches have celebrated Christmas joyfully and with moderation.

Bethlenben a becsvágy is dolgozott... Pár héttel királlyá választását követően lejárt a Béccsel kötött fegyverszünet, s folytatódott a háború. A választott király, koronával a kezében lemondott a trónról, hogy megtarthassa, ill. visszaadhassa a csapatai kezén lévő területek nagy részét a magyarok számára! Kállay László lelkipásztor, Phoenix, AZ A Kárpát-medencei magyar református egyházak vezetőit tömörítő testület, a Generális Konvent kezdeményezésére Bethlen Gábor ( ) erdélyi fejedelem emléktábláját avatták fel november 16-án, 11 órakor a Gyulafehérvári Székesegyházban.

Támogatta a jobbágygyerekek tanítását is. Iskolákat alapított, tanárokat támogatott, adománybirtokokat kötött le a fenntartási költségek fedezésére. A könyvtár keletkezését körülbelül re tehetjük. A díszes, gazdagon díszített kötetekből álló fejedelmi könyvtárat Bethlen 1622-ben megnyitotta a főiskola számára is. Ezért fordíttatta le több nyelvre is a bibliát. (Román nyelvre is). 18 18. oldal MAGYAR EGYHÁZ GABOR BETHLEN Gábor Bethlen He was an excellent politican and participated in the 30 Years War on the side of the Protestants. His clever foreign policiy and efficient internal policy secured the independence of Transylvania for a long time. His period is considered as the "Golden Age" or "Highlight" of Transylvania. The Hungarian Reformed Church in America is a progressive church growing beyond the limitations of nationality, applying the motto of the coat of arms granted by Gabor Bethlen to its ministers: "Arte et marte dimicandum!" "We must fight with knowledge and force!" The native form of this personal name is Bethlen Gábor. This article uses the Western name order. Gabriel Bethlen (de Iktár) (Hungarian: Bethlen Gábor, Romanian: Gabriel Bethlen, German: Gabriel Bethlen von Iktár; November 15, 1580 November 15, 1629) was a prince of Transylvania ( ), duke of Opole ( ) and leader of an anti-habsburg insurrection in the Habsburg Royal Hungary. His last armed intervention in 1626 was part of the Thirty Years' War. He led an active Protestantoriented foreign policy. Gabriel Bethlen, the most famous representative of the Iktári branch of the ancient Hungarian Bethlen family, was born at Marosillye (today Ilia in Romania) and educated at Szárhegy (today Lăzarea in Romania) at the castle of his uncle András Lázár. Thence he was sent to the court of the Transylvanian Prince Sigismund Báthory, whom he accompanied on his famous Wallachian campaign. Subsequently he assisted István Bocskay to become Prince of Transylvania in 1605 and remained his chief counsellor. Bethlen also supported Bocskay's successor Gabriel Báthory ( ), but the prince became jealous of Bethlen's superior abilities and Bethlen was obliged to take refuge with the Turks of the Ottoman Empire. In 1613, Bethlen led a large army against Prince Báthory, but in the same year Báthory was murdered by two of his officers. Bethlen was placed on the throne by the Ottomans in opposition to the wishes of the Austrian Habsburg emperor, who preferred a prince who would incline more toward Vienna than toward Turkish Constantinople. On October 13, 1613, the Transylvanian Diet at Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca), confirmed the choice of the Turkish sultan. In 1615, Bethlen was also officially recognized by the Emperor Matthias as the Prince of Transylvania; Bethlen promised in secret that he would help the Habsburgs against the Ottomans. While avoiding the cruelties and excesses of many of his predecessors, Bethlen established a singular variant of patriarchal but sufficiently enlightened absolutism. He developed mines and industry and nationalised many branches of Transylvania's foreign trade. His agents bought up many products at fixed prices and sold them abroad at a profit, almost doubling his revenues. He built himself a grand new palace in his capital, Apulum (today Alba Iulia), kept a sumptuous court, composed hymns, and patronised the arts and learning, especially in connection with his own Calvinist faith. He founded an academy to which he invited any pastor and teacher from Royal Hungary; sent students abroad to the Protestant universities of England, the Low Countries, and the Protestant principalities of Germany;, conferred hereditary nobility on all Protestant pastors; and forbade landlords to prevent their serfs from having their children schooled. Other parts of his revenue he devoted toward keeping an efficient standing army of mercenaries, with whose help he conducted an ambitious foreign policy. Keeping peace with the Ottoman Porte, he struck out to the north and west. There were several reasons for his anti-habsburg interventions in neighbouring Royal Hungary ( ) which took place during Central Europe's Thirty Years' War: He was partly motivated by personal ambition. Habsburg absolutism in Royal Hungary. The Habsburgs had started a successful Counter- Reformation in Royal Hungary which confiscated properties of local Protestants. Bethlen seems also to have been genuinely anxious to protect Protestant liberties. The Habsburgs had violated the Peace of Vienna of 1606 that put an end to the anti-habsburg uprising of Bethlen's "predecessor" István Bocskay. The Habsburgs had violated the secret agreement with Bethlen of 1615 and prolonged the peace with Ottoman Empire in July 1615, and even entered into an alliance with George Druget, the captain of Upper Hungary (i.e. present-day Slovakia and adjacent territories) against Bethlen. While Emperor Ferdinand was occupied with the Bohemian rebellion of 1618, Bethlen led his armies into Royal Hungary in August 1619 and occupied the town of Kassa (Košice) in September, where his Protestant supporters declared him "head" of Hungary and protector of the Protestants. He soon won over the entirety of present-day Slovakia, even securing the capital of Royal Hungary, Posonium (Pozsony), in October, where the palatine even handed over the Crown of St Stephen to Bethlen. Bethlen's troops joined with the troops of the Czech and Moravian estates (led by Count Jindrich Matyas Thurn), but they failed to conquer Vienna in November Bethlen was forced to leave Austria after being attacked by George Druget and Polish mercenaries

MAGYAR EGYHÁZ (lisowczycy) in Upper Hungary. Although he had conquered most of Royal Hungary, Bethlen was not averse to a peace, nor to a preliminary suspension of hostilities, and negotiations were opened at the conquered towns of Posonium (Bratislava), Kassa (Košice) and Besztercebánya (Banská Bystrica, Neosolium). Initially, they led to nothing because Bethlen insisted on including the Czechs in the peace, but finally a truce was concluded in January 1620 under which Bethlen received 13 counties in the east of Royal Hungary. On 20 August 1620 the estates elected him King of Hungary at the Diet in Neosolium (Banská Bystrica, Besztercebánya) with the consent of the Ottomans, but Bethlen refused to accept the crown because he wanted to reconcile with the Habsburgs and reunite Hungary. However, the war with the Habsburgs resumed in Royal Hungary and Lower Austria in September. The defeat of the Czech rebels by Ferdinand II s troops at the Battle of White Mountain on 8 November 1620 (to which Bethlen had sent 3,000 troops which arrived too late) gave a new turn to Bethlen s insurrection against the Habsburgs. Ferdinand II took a fearful revenge upon the Protestant nobility in Bohemia and reconquered Royal Hungary (Pressburg reconquered in May 1621, central part of the country with the mining towns in June 1621). Because the Protestant nobles had not received the confiscated property of the Catholics on Bethlen's territory and thus rescinded their support for Bethlen, and because Bethlen was not directly supported by the Ottomans, Bethlen started peace negotiations. As a result, the Treaty of Nikolsburg was concluded on December 31, 1621, under which Bethlen renounced the royal title on condition that Ferdinand confirmed the 1606 Peace of Vienna (which had granted full liberty of worship to the Hungarian Protestants) and engaged to summon a general diet within six months). The treaty granted full liberty of worship to the Protestants of Hungarian Transylvania and agreed on the summoning of a general diet within six months. In addition, Bethlen secured the (purely formal) title of Imperial Prince (of Hungarian Transylvania), seven counties around the Upper Tisza River (in presentday Slovakia, Ukraine, Hungary and Romania), the fortresses of Tokaj, Munkács, and Ecsed, and a duchy in Silesia. Subsequently Bethlen twice ( and 1626) launched further campaigns against Ferdinand to the territory of Hungarian Highlands present-day Slovakia, this time as a direct ally of the anti-habsburg Protestant powers. The first war was concluded by the 1624 Peace of Vienna, the second by the 1626 Peace of Pressburg- both confirmed the 1621 Peace of Nikolsburg. After the second of these campaigns, Bethlen attempted a rapprochement with the court of Vienna on the basis of an alliance against the Turks and his own marriage with an archduchess of Austria, but Ferdinand rejected his overtures. Bethlen was obliged to renounce his anti-turkish projects, which had always remained a goal of his. Accordingly, on his return from Vienna he wedded Catherine of Brandenburg, the daughter of the elector of Brandenburg, and still more closely allied himself with the Protestant powers, including his brother-in-law Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, who, he hoped, would aid him in obtaining the Polish crown. Bethlen died on November 15, 1629 before he could accomplish any of his great designs to unite Transylvania and Hungary, having previously secured the election of his wife Catherine as princess. His first wife, Zsuzsanna Károlyi, died in Gabriel Bethlen was one of the most striking and original personages of his century. A zealous Calvinist who boasted he had read the Bible twenty-five times, he was not a bigot and had helped the Jesuit György Káldy to translate and print his version 19. oldal of the Scriptures. He was in communication all his life with the leading contemporary statesmen, so that his correspondence is one of the most interesting and important of historical documents. He also composed hymns. Ki volt Bethlen Gábor? Bethlen Gábor (Marosillye, november Gyulafehérvár, november 15.) erdélyi fejedelem ( ), I. Gábor néven megválasztott magyar király ( ), a 17. századi magyar történelem egyik legjelentősebb személyisége volt. A sikerei nyomán megkötött békék orvosolták a rendi és vallási sérelmeket, biztosították a vallás szabad gyakorlását a királyi Magyarország lakosai számára is.

Bethlen Gábor címereslevele a lelkipásztorok utódai számára (1629). A társadalmi rang igazolására szolgált, a kiváltságok forrásának tekintették, ezért évszázadokon át féltve őrizték. A címeradományok eredete A címereslevelek kiadása a 14. században kezdődött. Később számos használatban levő címerre is címeres levelet kértek a viselői. A címeres levelek talán olasz területről erednek, állítólag már IV. Fülöp francia király is kiállított néhányat, de egy sem maradt fenn. Az első ismert címeres levélként IV. Lajos németrómai császár oklevelét szokták nyilvántartani, február 8- áról, Carbonesi a grófok számára. A címeres levelek kiállítása A 14. század első harmadában kelt címeradományok tulajdonképpen sisakdísz-adományok voltak. Teljes címeradományban először a Csentevölgyi család részesült Zsigmond királytól 1398-ban.

A címeres levelek elkészítését a megadományozott fizette. A címeres levél kiállítását (mely Magyarországon együttjárt a nemesi címmel) a kedvezményezett érdemeire hivatkozva kérvényezhette is. A 17. században a címereslevél társadalmi rangja, értéke fokozatosan leértékelődött. A török elleni felszabadító háborúban való részvétel igen sok új armalis keletkezését tette lehetővé. Ezekben a címerekben főként levágott török fejek, vérző holttestek, magyar-török párviadalok szerepelnek. A 19. századtól szokássá vált a címeres levelek letétbe helyezése a helyi levéltárakban.

A lelkészek utódaiak 1629-es címereslevele követi a címeres levelek szokásos szerkezetét: 1. Megnevezi a kibocsátó uralkodót, akitől a kiváltság származik, 2. méltatja a címerszerző érdemeit, melyeknél fogva méltó a kiváltságra, 3. megadja a megadományozottak névsorát és a kiváltságot az utódaikra is kiterjeszti, 4. leírja a címert, 5. kijelöli a címer használatának körét, 6. megadja az oklevél keltezését. (Hasonló volt a cseh címeres levelek szerkezete is.) Johannes Torma juratus notarius comitatus Bihoriensis m. pr. Másolat a lelkipásztorok utódainak címeréről A címeres nemeslevél magyar fordítása: Mi Gábor, Isten kegyelméből a Római Szent Birodalom és Erdély Fejedelme, Magyarország részeinek ura, a székelyek ispánja és Oppeln és Ratibor hercege stb., a fejedelmek magasztos méltóságával jár, hogy egyéb dolgaik végzése mellett különös gondot fordítsanak és törekvésüket mentől buzgóbban arra irányozzák, hogy alattvalóiknak helyzetét és állapotát szem előtt tartva, mindegyiket megérdemelt munkája szerint, magasabb tisztességre és az előmenetelnek szerencsésebb fokára segítsék, sőt, hogy a becsülést nyújtó elismerésnek nagyobb hírére emeljék. Ugyanis annál nagyobb a fejedelmek méltósága, minél tekintélyesebb emberek fejének tartatnak.
