Report on esi Scientific plans 7 th EU Framework Program José Castell Vice-President ecopa, ES
the Seventh Framework Programme (2007-2013) Ecopa scientific plans for 2007-2008?
Funding instruments proposed in FP7 : Collaborative projects to develop new knowledge, new technology, products, demonstration activities Small or medium-sized focused research actions Large-scale integrating projects Projects targeted at special groups Networks of Excellence Coordination and support actions Support for frontier research (individual teams) => ERC Support for training and career development of researchers Research for the benefit of specific groups (in particular SMEs)
Activities where in vitro is mentioned (I): HEALTH: Biotechnology, generic tools and technologies for human health. High-throughput research. To catalyse experimental progress in biomedical research by enhancing data generation, standardisation, acquisition and analysis. Detection, diagnosis and monitoring. With emphasis on non-invasive or minimally invasive approaches. Predicting suitability, safety and efficacy of therapies. To develop and validate biological markers, in vivo and in vitro methods and models, including simulation, pharmacogenomics, targeting approaches and alternatives to animal testing.
Activities where in vitro is mentioned (II): Climate change, pollution and risks Environment and health: Interaction of environmental stressors with human health including identification of sources, links to indoor environment, and impact and emerging risk factors; integrated risk assessment methods for toxic substances including alternatives to animal testing; quantification and cost-benefit analysis of environmental health risks and indicators for prevention strategies.
Primary targets: Alternative testing strategies (HEALTH-2007-A-1.1.4), (1st call) HEALTH-2007-A-1.1.4.0-1: Novel alternative testing strategies for use in pharmaceutical discovery and development. Funding scheme: Collaborative project (Large-scale integrating project). HEALTH-2007-A-1.1.4.0-2: Bottlenecks in reduction, refinement and replacement of animal testing in pharmaceutical discovery and development. Coordination & Support Action (Organization of three workshops in order to determine the state of the art of each of the three R approaches in the EU25). The results of the workshops should be summarized in consensus papers with suggestions for a roadmap (Coordination and support actions). HEALTH-2007-A-1.1.4.0-3: Promotion, development, validation, acceptance and implementation of QSARs (quantitative structure-activity relationship) for toxicology. Funding scheme: Collaborative projects (Small or medium-scale focused research projects).
Primary targets (cont.): Alternative testing strategies (HEALTH-2007-A-1.1.4), (1st call) HEALTH-A-1.1.4.0-4: Alternative testing strategies for the assessment of the toxicological profile of nanoparticles used in medical diagnostics. Collaborative projects (Small or medium-scale focused research projects). HEALTH-2007-A-1.1.4.0-5: In silico modelling for ADMET outcomes. Funding scheme: Collaborative project (Large-scale integrating project). No other calls forseen according to the actual draft and roadmap!
Other targets: HEALTH-2007-A-1.1.3.0-2: Innovative approaches for the development of vaccines for young children. Research should include in vitro proof-of-principle, safety and scale-up studies. Funding scheme: Collaborative projects (Small or medium-scale focused research projects). HEALTH-2007-A-1.2.1.1-1: Networking major biobanking initiatives across Europe: developing standards and norms for existing and future human sample biobanks. Biobanking initiatives across Europe with the objective of ensuring future exploitation of cell resources. Funding scheme: Network of Excellence. HEALTH-2007-A-1.2.1.2-4: Developing an integrated in vitro, in vivo and systems biology modelling approach to understanding apoptosis in the context of health and disease. Quantitative experimental and clinical data should be combined with theoretical models that guide analyses, including in silico models. Funding scheme: Collaborative project (Large-scale integrating project).
Other targets: HEALTH-2007-B-1.2.4.3-4: Use of beta cell imaging in diabetes mellitus. Investigation of beta cell mass regulation in vitro and in vivo. Funding scheme: Collaborative projects (Small or medium-scale focused research projects). HEALTH-2007-A-1.2.4.4-1: Natural course and pathophysiology of rare diseases. Attention should be given to the development of adequate models (in vitro and animal models). Funding scheme: Collaborative projects (Small or mediumscale focused research projects).
Theme 6 Environment (including Climate Change); Climate change, pollution and risks Environment and health: Interaction of environmental stressors with human health including identification of sources, links to indoor environment, and impact and emerging risk factors; integrated risk assessment methods for toxic substances including alternatives to animal testing; quantification and cost-benefit analysis of environmental health risks and indicators for prevention strategies. Technology assessment, verification and testing: Methods and tools for environmental risk and lifecycle assessment of processes, technologies and products, including alternative testing strategies and in particular non-animal methods for industrial chemicals;
