THERE IS / ARE SZERKEZET A létezés vagy a létező dolog hangsúlyozására szolgáló nyelvtani szerkezet A leírt angol mondatban többnyire az ige után álló mondatrész a leghangsúlyosabb. Ezért, mivel a kötött szórend miatt az alany az ige előtt áll, a normál szerkezetű mondatban nem kaphat igazán nagy nyomatékot. pl. A fly is in the soup. az ige után a helyhatározó áll, így azt kell a leghangsúlyosabbnak tekintenünk (A LEVESBEN van egy légy.). Ha az alanyt (ami van) szeretnénk nagyobb hangsúllyal szerepeltetni, más szerkezetet kell használnunk, amelyben az alany az ige mögé kerülhet. Erre jó a there is/are szerkezet. FELÉPÍTÉSE THERE + IS/ARE + a létező dolog + egyebek (pl. helyhatározó) Ez tkp. egy ál-alany, nem fordítjuk le a magyarban. Ez a valódi alany, de nem a megszokott helyén áll (az ige előtt) hanem az ige mögé került, ezáltal hangsúly esik rá. pl. There is a fly in the soup. (Egy LÉGY van a levesben.) Összevonás: A there összevonható a létigével: there is = there s there are = there re HASZNÁLATA A) Ha a létezés tényét (azt, hogy VAN valami) akarjuk hangsúlyozni pl. VAN egy légy a levesben. = There is a fly in the soup. / A létezést hangsúlyozzuk B) Ha magát a létező dolgot (azt, AMI van) akarjuk hangsúlyozni pl. Egy LÉGY van a levesben. = There is a fly in the soup. / A létező dolgot hangsúlyozzuk Ha mást akarunk hangsúlyozni (pl. a helyet), nem használjuk a there is / are szerkezetet! pl. A LEVESBEN van légy (és nem a falon). = A fly is IN THE SOUP (not on the wall). / a helyet hangsúlyozzuk nincs there is / are szerkezet
TAGADÁS (NINCS) A not tagadószó a létige után áll (és összevonható vele). THERE IS / ARE + NOT + a létező dolog + egyebek pl. There aren t witches. (Nincsenek boszorkányok.) There isn t snow in the desert. (Nincs hó a sivatagban.) KÉRDEZÉS IS / ARE + THERE + a létező dolog + egyebek pl. Is there a jar in the picture? (Van csupor a képen?) Megjegyzés: A there is/are szerkezet nem csak a létigével használható! Előfordul, hogy más ige előtt is használjuk a there szót, mely révén az ige és a valódi alany nagyobb hangsúlyt kap. pl. There exist several theories on this matter. (Számos elmélet létezik eről a témáról. Once upon a time, there lived an old man in a small house.
