7 I. Introduction The aim of the present work is to provide language teachers and professional subject teachers with useful, authentic and truly relevant supplementary teaching material for teaching English for IT. The present material is the result of a project in which language teachers and IT teachers worked together not only in Hungary but also in Manchester UK. Teaching ESP (English for Special Purposes) is a relatively novel but booming area of language teaching. A growing proportion of language learners want to learn English because it has become an indispensable tool in their careers or an absolute necessity order to obtain their degrees. Besides providing material with useful content, it was also our aim to introduce modern methods used in general English lessons to ESP. The tasks in this supplementary teaching material have been carefully developed to keep learner s involvement at a maximum. Several traditional tasks have been adapted to develop the communicative competence in a stress-free way, help learners better progress by lowering the affective filter. Group dynamics related issues also played an important role and for that reason, several tasks promoting cooperative learning have been included. A comprehensive link section has been prepared to help language teachers and professional subject teachers alike find authentic professional teaching materials. II. Intended Use The material was designed to be used in language or even in professional subject lessons in secondary schools, post-secondary vocational courses, higher education diploma courses or in adult education. Some parts can be used for self-study but it was not in the main focus of the project. The material can be used most effectively with pre-intermediate learners (B1 by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) whose professional knowledge is strong enough. On the other hand, certain parts of the supplementary teaching material (e.g. word cards, puzzles etc.) can be used effectively with higher level students. III. Acknowledgements We would like to express our gratitude to all the people whose work made the successful accomplishment of the supplementary teaching material possible: the project management in NSZFI, the friendly staff of Katedra Language School, language and IT teachers who take part in the work and last but not least Paul Entwistle our UK organiser and the always helpful staff of the College of Manchester. I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you very much to Peter Zsirmik for the photos and his valuable help.
8 IV. Supplementary Teaching Material for Language lessons A. Microsoft Office Suite Basic Office Words and Microsoft Office Word Teachers notes TANANYAGSEGÉDLET AZ INFORMATIKAI ANGOL SZAKNYELV TANÍTÁSÁHOZ B1 szint Warm-up Step 1 Shouting dictation The students need to stand in two lines facing each other. Student As stand on the left side of the class room, Students B-s on the right. The lines should be a good distance apart (at least 3 metres). The person they face is their shouting dictation partner. Students As have to dictate the first 5 questions to their partners. Their partner must spell everything correctly and accurately record. The noise of so many students speaking will lead to the raising of voices, hence Shouting dictation. To make it more challenging some music can be played. Be careful with the setting up of this task. The neighbouring students have to start with different questions. When the students are ready they swap roles. As a variation: A time limit can be set, the first pair with the correct solution can get a prize etc. Step 2 Group Discussion Students discuss the questions in small groups, then the whole class together. Note: If the class does not know the answer for a certain question, it can be set as homework to find the answer. There is a reading in Step 3 about Charles Simonyi. 8
9 Worksheet for Shouting Dictation Student A 1. What do you know about Microsoft Office Suite? What does it contain? 2. What is Microsoft Office InfoPath? 3. Do you know any other word processors? 4. 10 Part I and II Wordlists The wordlists contain the most important words or expressions of the PowerPoint toolbar and menu points. The lists are different from traditional vocabulary lists as they do not contain translations. Occasionally the pairs do not even belong to the same part of speech category. (e.g. apply alkalmazás) The words and expressions show how different menu points are called in English and in Hungarian. Part II Activating Lexis Working with word cards Task A Learners work in pairs. Each pair works with a set of cut up word cards. Learners have to match the English word with its Hungarian equivalent and a definition card. TANANYAGSEGÉDLET AZ INFORMATIKAI ANGOL SZAKNYELV TANÍTÁSÁHOZ B1 szint Task B Learners work with the definition cards only. They read out the definitions and try to say the word. Task C Learners work with the English word cards. They read out the words and try to give definitions. Task D Learners play Memory Game. They use the Hungarian and the English word cards. They put the cards on the desk facing down and they take turns to turn over a pair of the cards. If the cards match, the learner can keep them. If not, they must be put back. The winner has the most cards at the end. 10
11 Part III Crossword Puzzle Learners work in pairs or in small groups. One student has only half of the clues so they have to cooperate. With a weaker group students with the same worksheet can form a big group and work out the necessary definitions together. The crossword was made by the help of Clues: ACROSS DOWN 1 Alsó index 2 Vágólap 3 Élőláb 3 Lábjegyzet 4 Sorkizárt 5 Szélesség 7 Állólap 6 Élőfej 9 Mégis 8 Szegély és mintázat (több szó) 11 Korlátlan hozzáférés (2) 10 Felsorolás 13 Formázás felfedése (2) 12 Beilleszt 18 Behúzás 14 Testreszab 19 Áthúzott 15 Szavak száma (2) 20 Térköz 16 Visszavon 21 Fekvőlap 17 Cellák egyesítése (2) 22 Dőltbetű 23 Igazítás 24 Rácsvonalak supplementary MATERIAL For TEACHING english FOR informatics B1 level 11

Their task is to describe it in a few sentences in writing. Then the students who have the same picture form pairs and they compare their work. They produce an edited version of the description. Then pairs with the same picture meet and form a group. They prepare a super version of the description. As the final step the teacher puts the super versions and the pictures on the wall. Students are given post-it notes. They go around and read each other s work and stick remarks on the descriptions. Students go back to their work and read the remarks. As a follow-up the whole class discusses what they learn during the task. 49 Excel Teachers notes Warm-up- Group discussion The teacher puts the students into small groups. Each group is given a question on a slip of paper. Students discuss the question. When the teacher claps they swap questions. The task is finished when each group has discussed each question. 1. What is Microsoft Excel? What is it used for? 2. Are there any other similar programs? 3. What functions do you think are very useful? What function would be useful to include? 4. Have you tried Excel 2010? What do you know about office 2010? As a follow-up the class can discuss the answers. Answer for question 2: There are lots of different types of this software. For further information see: This topic is suitable to organise a project around it or it can be used for a web quest lesson. Part I and II Wordlists The wordlists contain the most important words or expressions of the Excel toolbar and menu points. The lists are different from traditional vocabulary lists as they do not contain translations. Occasionally the pairs do not even belong to the same part of speech category. (E.g. 73 B. Computer components Teachers notes The word lists The computer components part begins with English-Hungarian and Hungarian-English wordlists. The lists contain 80 words or expressions each which all appear in the following sections. The memory game The game contains 20 pairs of cards. Each pair is made up of a photo card and the name of the object on a word card. The photos and the words will appear in the later sections. If needed, more information can be found there. The game can be played as a classical memory game in pairs or in small groups. The cards must be shuffled and laid on the table, face down. On each turn, a player turns over two cards (one at a time) and keeps them if they match and the player also gets to take another turn. When a player turns over two cards that do not match, those cards are turned face down again and it becomes the next player s turn. When all the cards have been taken, the winner is the player with most pairs. Variation A Learners play with the photos only. Learner A takes a card and defines the object on it. Learner B has to say the name of the object. Variation B Learners play with the photo cards only. The cards must be shuffled and laid on the table, face up. The learners play in pairs or small groups. Learner A has to choose a card and define the object on it. Learner B has to find the card. Then they swap roles. The activity can also be done with the word cards. Variation C Learners can play Snakes and Ladders when they arrive on a square they have to take a word card/ photo card and define the object on it. If the learner cannot define the object or the other members of the group do not accept the explanation, the learner has to go back. supplementary MATERIAL For TEACHING english FOR informatics B1 level 73

The pictures and the words in the main vocabulary tasks are the same as the words on the wordlist or the photos in the memory game. TANANYAGSEGÉDLET AZ INFORMATIKAI ANGOL SZAKNYELV TANÍTÁSÁHOZ B1 szint Picture 1 Solution Task 1 This is a photo of a Synchronous Dynamic RAM modul. Background information: Synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) is dynamic random access memory (DRAM) that has a synchronous interface. Traditionally, dynamic random access memory (DRAM) has an asynchronous interface, which means that it responds as quickly as possible to changes in control inputs. SDRAM has a synchronous interface, meaning that it waits for a clock signal before responding to control inputs and is therefore synchronized with the computer s system bus. This allows the chip to have a more complex pattern of operation than an asynchronous DRAM, which does not have a synchronized interface. (Adapted from: ) Task e d a c b Task 3 Find the mistakes Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is the sudden and momentary electric current that flows between two objects at different electrical potentials caused by direct contact or induced by an electrostatic field. The term is usually used in the electronics and the other industries to describe momentary unwanted currents that may cause the damage to electronic equipment. 74
75 Picture 2 Task 1 This is a photo of a Double Data Rate SDRAM modul Background information Double data rate synchronous dynamic random access memory (DDR SDRAM) is a class of memory integrated circuits used in computers. Compared to single data rate (SDR) SDRAM, the DDR SDRAM interface makes higher transfer rates possible by more strict control of the timing of the electrical data and clock signals. The name double data rate refers to the fact that a DDR SDRAM with a certain clock frequency achieves nearly twice the bandwidth of a single data rate (SDR) SDRAM running at the same clock frequency, due to this double pumping. DDR SDRAM gives a maximum transfer rate of 1600 MB/s. (Adapted from: ) Task 2 Match the cells. 1. memory address The speed with which data can be transmitted a. átvitel from one device to another. 76 Task 4 Articles Double data rate synchronous dynamic random access memory (DDR SDRAM) is an class of memory integrated circuits used in the computers. Compared to single data rate (SDR) SDRAM, the DDR SDRAM interface makes the higher transfer rates possible by stricter control of the timing of the electrical data and clock signals. Implementations often have to use schemes such as phase-locked loops and self-calibration to reach the required timing accuracy. 77 Task 4 Find the mistakes. The mouse is a pointing device that controls the movement of the cursor or pointer on a display screen. A mouse is a small object you can roll along a hard, flat surface. Its name is derived from its shape, which looks a bit like a mouse, its connecting wire that one can imagine to be the mouse s tail. As you move the mouse, the pointer on the display screen moves in the same direction. Mice contain at least one button and sometimes as many as three, which have different functions depending on what program is running. Some newer mice also include a scroll wheel for scrolling through long documents. Mice connect to PCs in one of several ways: 1. Serial mice connect directly to an RS-232C serial port or a PS/2 port. This is the simplest type of connection. 2. PS/2 mice connect to a PS/2 port. 3. USB mice. It supports a mini DIN plug containing just 6 pins. Most PCs have a PS/2 port so that the serial port can be used by another device, such as a modem. The PS/2 port is often called the mouse port. Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a specification to establish communication between devices and a host controller (usually personal computers). It was developed and invented by Ajay Bhatt while working for Intel. USB is intended to replace many varieties of serial and parallel ports. USB can connect computer peripherals such as mice, keyboards, digital cameras, printers, personal media players, flash drives, and external hard drives. For many of those devices, USB has become the standard connection method. (Adapted from: and ) supplementary MATERIAL For TEACHING english FOR informatics B1 level 77

85 - Every student gets a part of the article on a slip of paper and a question. They have to stand up and mingle to find the answer for their question. The questions: 1. What is a floppy disc made of? 2. What does FDD stand for? 3. How long were floppy discs popular? 4. How can data be written on it? 5. How is it read? The answers are marked in the original text. A floppy disk is a data storage medium that is composed of a disk of thin, flexible ( floppy ) magnetic storage medium encased in a square or rectangular plastic shell. (1) Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive or FDD. (2) Invented by IBM, floppy disks in 8 inch, 5¼ inch and 3½ inch forms enjoyed nearly three decades (3) as a popular and ubiquitous form of data storage and exchange. A small motor in the drive rotates the disk at a regulated speed while a second motor-operated mechanism moves the magnetic read/write head along the surface of the disk. To write data onto the disk, current is sent through a coil in the head. The magnetic field of the coil magnetizes spots on the disk as it rotates; the change in magnetization encodes the digital data. (4) To read data, the tiny voltages induced in the head coil by the magnetization on the disk are detected, amplified by the disk drive electronics, and sent to the Floppy disk controller. (5) The controller separates the data from the stream of pulses coming from the drive, decodes the data, tests for errors, and sends the data on to the host computer system. A hard disk drive is a non-volatile storage device for digital data. It features one or more rotating rigid platters on a motor-driven spindle within a metal case. Data is encoded magnetically by read/write heads that float on a cushion of air above the platters.hdds record data by magnetizing ferromagnetic material directionally, to represent either a 0 or a 1 binary digit. They read the data back by detecting the magnetization of the material. A typical HDD design consists of a spindle that holds one or more flat circular disks called platters, onto which the data is recorded. The platters are made from a non-magnetic material, usually aluminium alloy or glass, and are coated with a thin layer of magnetic material with an outer layer of carbon for protection. The platters are spun at very high speeds. Information is written to a platter as it rotates past devices called read-and-write heads that operate very close over the magnetic surface. The read-and-write head is used to detect and modify the magnetization of the material immediately under it. (Adapted from: Picture 11 Task 1 These are photos of: 1. Paralell ATA (IDE) cable 2. Separate Video, more commonly known as S-Video, also called Y/C, and sometimes incorrectly referred to as Super Video, is (1) an analog video signal that carries video data as two separate signals: luma (luminance) and chroma (color). This differs from composite video, which carries picture information as a single lowerquality signal, and component video, which carries picture information as three separate higher-quality signals. (2) S-Video carries standard definition video, but does not carry audio on the same cable. Composite video is the format of an analog television (picture only) signal before it is combined with a sound signal and modulated onto an RF carrier. (3) It is a composite of three source signals called Y, U and V with sync pulses. Y represents the brightness or luminance of the picture and includes synchronizing pulses, so that by itself it could be displayed as a monochrome picture. TANANYAGSEGÉDLET AZ INFORMATIKAI ANGOL SZAKNYELV TANÍTÁSÁHOZ B1 szint A video card, video adapter, graphics-accelerator card, display adapter or graphics card is an expansion card whose function is to generate and output images to a display. Many video cards offer added functions, such as accelerated rendering of 3D scenes and 2D graphics, video capture, TV-tuner adapter, TV output, or the ability to connect multiple monitors. Other modern high performance video cards are used for more graphically demanding purposes, such as PC games. Video hardware can be integrated on the motherboard, often occurring with early machines. In this configuration it is sometimes referred to as a video controller or graphics controller. Modern low-end to mid-range motherboards often include a graphics chipset developed by the developer of the northbridge on the motherboard. This graphics chip usually has a small quantity of embedded memory and takes some of the system s main RAM, reducing the total RAM available. This is usually called integrated graphics or on-board graphics, and is low-performance and undesirable for those wishing to run 3D applications. (Adapted from: A. Answer the questions. 1. 120 Task 3 Reading the text and do the excercises below. TANANYAGSEGÉDLET AZ INFORMATIKAI ANGOL SZAKNYELV TANÍTÁSÁHOZ B1 szint A floppy disk is a data storage medium that is composed of a disk of thin, flexible ( floppy ) magnetic storage medium encased in a square or rectangular plastic shell. Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive or FDD. Invented by IBM, floppy disks in 8 inch, 5¼ inch and 3½ inch forms enjoyed nearly three decades as a popular and ubiquitous form of data storage and exchange. To read data, the tiny voltages induced in the head coil by the magnetization on the disk are detected, amplified by the disk drive electronics, and sent to the Floppy disk controller. The controller separates the data from the stream of pulses coming from the drive, decodes the data, tests for errors, and sends the data on to the host computer system. (Adapted from: ) A. 122 A hard disk drive is a non-volatile storage device for digital data. It features one or more rotating rigid platters on a motor-driven spindle within a metal case. The read/write heads that float on a cushion of air above the platters encode the data magnetically(1). HDDs record data by magnetizing ferromagnetic material directionally, to represent either a 0 or a 1 binary digit. They read the data back by detecting the magnetization of the material. A typical HDD design consists of a spindle that holds one or more flat circular disks called platters, onto which they record the data(2). People make the platters from a non-magnetic material, usually aluminum alloy or glass(3), and the platters are coated with a thin layer of magnetic material with an outer layer of carbon for protection(4). The device spins* the platters at very high speeds(5). It writes information to a platter(6) as it rotates past devices called read-and-write heads that operate very close over the magnetic surface. People use the read-and-write head to detect and modify the magnetization of the material immediately under it(7). Parallel ATA (PATA) is an obsolete interface standard for the connection of storage devices such as hard disks, solid-state drives, floppy drives, and CD-ROM drives in computers. The current Parallel ATA standard is the result of a long history of technical development, which began with the original AT Attachment interface, developed for use in early PC AT equipment. Parallel ATA only allows cable lengths up to 18 in (457 mm). Because of this length limit the technology normally appears as an internal computer storage interface. For many years ATA provided the most common and the least expensive interface for this application. By the beginning of 2007, it had largely been replaced by Serial ATA (SATA) in new systems. TANANYAGSEGÉDLET AZ INFORMATIKAI ANGOL SZAKNYELV TANÍTÁSÁHOZ B1 szint Separate Video, more commonly known as S-Video, also called Y/C, and sometimes incorrectly referred to as Super Video, is an analog video signal that carries video data as two separate signals: luma (luminance) and chroma (color). This differs from composite video, which carries picture information as a single lower-quality signal, and component video, which carries picture information as three separate higher-quality signals. S-Video carries standard definition video, but does not carry audio on the same cable. Composite video is the format of an analog television (picture only) signal before it is combined with a sound signal and modulated onto an RF carrier. It is a composite of three source signals called Y, U and V with sync pulses. Y represents the brightness or luminance of the picture and includes synchronizing pulses, so that by itself it could be displayed as a monochrome picture. U and V represent hue and saturation or chrominance; between them they carry the color information. (Adatpted from : and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/s_video ) 1. How does S-Video carry the signals? 2. The goal is to produce a signal that can be transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data. Modems can be used over any means of transmitting analog signals, from driven diodes to radio. The most familiar example is a voiceband modem that turns the digital data of a personal computer into analog audio signals that can be transmitted over a telephone line, and once received on the other side, a modem converts the analog data back into digital. Modems are generally classified by the amount of data they can send in a given time, normally measured in bits per second (bit/s, or bps). They can also be classified by Baud, the number of times the modem changes its signal state per second. The baud unit is named after Emile Baudot, the inventor of the Baudot code for telegraphy.
