Hungarian Natural History Museum Hungarian Society of Parasitologists Parasit. hung., 29-30: 87-93, 1996-1997 In memóriám Tibor Kobulej (1921-1997) Tibor KASSAI (Received 11 June, 1997) It was just a few months ago that Professor Tibor Kobulej was cordially addressed at the General Meeting of the Hungarian Society of Parasitologists on the occasion of his 75th birthday. Though his chronic ill health was well known to his friends and colleagues nobody suspected that the fate would be so much stingy to give him such a limited time of life to enjoy. He passed away on 3rd May, 1997 of a sudden heart attack. He was born in Munkács in the Czechoslovak Republic (now Mukachevo of the Ukrainian Republic) on 20 March 1921. His father was an Ukrainian railway officer. He attended grammar school at his birthplace, Munkács and Beregszász (now Beregovo). Then he moved to Hungary and graduated as veterinarian in 1944 from the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences of the "József Nádor' 1 University of Technical and Economical Sciences of Budapest. It was in 1947 that he joined the Department of General Zoology and Parasitology of the University of Veterinary Sciences in Budapest. He was awarded the degree of Candidate of Veterinary Science in 1952. As Professor Sándor Kotlán retired in 1966 Tibor Kobulej succeeded him to the Chair of that Department that he headed in the ensuing 16 years until his retirement in 1982. Under his direction the educational and scientific activities of the Department were focused to meeting the demands raised by the large-scale and cooperative farming system and by the establishing specialized industrial units in bovine, porcine and poultry husbandly. His scientific interests in parasitology were very wide. Studies of the epidemiologically important features of the economically relevant helminthoses of livestock, including liver fluke and rumen fluke diseases, ascariosis of pigs, echinococcosis and toxocarosis of dogs, hypodermosis of cattle, amidostomosis of geese, etc. were always in the front line of his research interest. The results of these studies were meant to provide the basis of anthelmintic campaigns, what he as an ardent follower of the devastation theory put forward by the Soviet school of

helminthology founded by K. I. Skrjabin instigated and encouraged indefatigably and with great enthusiasm. He has organized dosis confirmatory field studies of several, emerging potent parasiticides such as niclofolan, praziquantel, albendazole, ditriphon and others. Among the numerous other subjects of Professor Kobulej's research interests we may mention his studies on the morphology of sarcoptic and trombiculid mites, the experimental work clarifying the migration pattern of Toxocara larvae in the mouse as paratenic host, the field study on lymnaeid snails playing part in the life cycle of Fasciola in Hungary. He proposed a simple method of forecasting outbreaks of liver fluke disease. He was concerned in the elaboration and launching of rational and economic control programmes applicable under large-scale farming conditions against fasciolosis, paramphistomosis, gastrointestinal nematodosis of ruminants, ascariosis of pigs, hypodermosis of cattle. He never stopped emphasizing the hazard what parasitic infections of livestock and companion animals may present to the human health, and tirelessly propagated the need of implementing integrated control programmes especially against larval echinococcosis (hydatidosis) and toxocarosis (visceral larva migrans). Although his cardiac illness rendered him to retire from laboratory and administrative work in 1982, his interest in current matters of parasitology never flagged, and he continued paying his visits frequently at the Department until the very recent time. The results of his scientific work have been published in 4 books and book chapters, and some 60 original papers. He has made his most meaningful contribution to the Hungarian parasitological literature by updating Kotlán's earlier textbook on parasitology, and the new (fourth) edition, Kotlán and Kobulej: Parazitológia (1972) served for long as a definitive and comprehensive reference work for training veterinary students and guiding practising veterinarians. In his life throughout the professional work was always combined with communal and political activities. He has been member of the presidium of the Hungarian Society of Parasitologists since its foundation in 1964. He extended his services to the whole of the Hungarian veterinary medicine as being the technical editor of Acta Veterinaria Hungarica since its launching in 1951 for 30 years. He had been one of the leading officers of the Hungarian Veterinary Association first as elected Secretary, then Vice-President (1973-1978). He was member of the Board of the Hungarian Zoonosis Society. He was a recognized person also in international professional circles. He had excellent command of the Russian, Ukrainian, Czech and German languages and his polyglottism helped him to become a respectful cultivator of the international relations of parasitologists particularly in the Central an East European region. He maintained especially intensive contacts with the prestigious Soviet parasitologists. He was elected Vice-President (1975-1977) of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology, honorary member of the All-Union Society of Helminthologists, the Czechoslovak, the Bulgarian and the German Parasitological Societies. He was member of the editorial boards of Parasitologia Hungarica, Acta Veterinaria Hungarica, Helminthologia, Folia Parasitologica, Angewandte Parasitologic He was decorated by the Golden Medal of Order of Work (1956) and by the Commemoration Medal of the Hungarian Society of Parasitologists (1975) and by the K. I. Skrjabin Memorial Medal of the All-Union Helminthological Society (1983). Tibor Kobulej had wide intellectual interests outside parasitology with a special love for history. When asked for help he gave it willingly and unstintingly. He was a man devoted

to action, responsive to the events happening around him, ranking friendship high on his personal scale of values, desirous of maintaining personal contact with his friends and colleagues, to whom he was always happy to tell his funny stories. He was fortunate to have a truly harmonious family life with his beloved wife, Miriam and his son, Ivan. Few days before his passing away he still presented a lecture on the control of porcine ascariosis well received by his veterinary audience. He has told his last anecdote... His legacy will continue in his publications and in the memory of those who knew him as a husband, father, grandfather, colleague, teacher or friend. Kassai, T.: In memóriám Kobulej Tibor (1921-1997) Néhány hónappal ezelőtt, az MPT 1996. évi közgyűlésén ünnepeltük Kobulej Tibornak, a Társaság egyik alapító tagjának és sok éven keresztül az elnökség tagjának 75. születésnapját. Szellemileg friss, testi erejében rugalmas, a tudományos és társadalmi életben aktív ember volt, s bár hosszú idő óta küszködött szívbántalmakkal, senki sem gondolta, hogy egyéni humorát a Társaság tagjai utoljára élvezhették. 1997. május 3-án végzetes szívroham érte. Kobulej Tibor 1921. március 20-án Munkácson született az akkori Csehszlovákia területén. Középiskolai tanulmányait Munkácson és Beregszászon végezte. Főiskolásként Budapestre került. 1944-ben a budapesti József Nádor Műszaki és Gazdaságtudományi Egyetem állatorvosi karán szerzett állatorvosi oklevelet. 1947-től az Allatorvostudományi Egyetem általános állattani és parazitológiai tanszékén dolgozott. 1952-ben megszerezte az állatorvostudományok kandidátusa címet. Kotlán Sándor akadémikus 1966-os nyugdíjba vonulása után a Tanszék vezetőjévé nevezték ki, melynek élén 16 éven keresztül látta el a professzori teendőket. 1982-ben betegsége nyugdíjba kényszerítette, de a parazitológia iránti érdeklődését haláláig megőrizte. Érdeklődési köre kiterjedt a külső és belső élősködők járvány- és élettanára, ökonómiai kérdésekre, antiparazitikumok kipróbálására mind klinikai, mind nagyüzemi körülmények, mind pedig a kisebb állattartó telepek viszonyai között. Sokoldalú munkásságát publikációinak címjegyzéke dokumentálja. Tanszéki és kutatói munkája mellett igen aktív részt vállalt a tudományos és tudománypolitikai közéletben. A Magyar Parazitológusok Társasága elnökségének az alapítás óta (1964) funkcionáriusa, a Magyar Állatorvosok Társasága titkára, majd öt éven keresztül alelnöke, a Magyar Zoonózis Társaság elnökségének tagja volt. Az Acta Veterinaria Hungarica technikai szerkesztője volt 1951 -tői 30 éven keresztül, a Parasitologja Hungarica szerkesztő bizottságában 25 éven át tevékenykedett. Megbecsült és népszerű tagja volt a nemzetközi parazitológiai életnek. Anyanyelvi szinten beszélte a cseh, orosz, ukrán és német nyelveket. Közös kutatások és baráti szálak fűzték a csehszlovákiai, lengyel, német, bolgár, török, szerb parazitológusokhoz, a szkrjabini iskola belső munkatársaként ismerték világszerte. Nemzetközi tisztségei és kitüntetései: 1975-1977 között a WAAVP alelnöke, az Össz-szövetségi Helmintológiai Társaság, a Csehszlovák, Bolgár és Német Parazitológusok Szövetségének tiszteleti tagja. A Helrninthologia, a Folia Parasitologica és az Angewandte Parasitologic szerkesztő bizottságának tagja. Kitüntették a Munka Érdemrend arany fokozatával (1956), megkapta a Magyar Parazitológusok Társasága emlékérmét (1975) és az Össz-szövetségi Helmintológiai Társaság K. I. Szkrjabin emlékérmét (1983). Nemcsak a magyar, de a nemzetközi parazitológia is különösen lelkes és hasznos tagját vesztette el Kobulej Tibor professzor személyében. Emlékét őrizzük.
