RIVER TISZA recent changes, human interferences River adjustment works started in the middle of the 19 th century: first of all by the building of floodbanks (levees) and the cutting through of meanders to promote the quickest discharge of floods possible. The work was lead by Széchenyi on the basis of the plans of Vásárhelyi. It should be noted that even then a number of experts were of the opinion that it is unnecessary to prevent the flooding of the rivers, it should be limited only. Each phase of river adjustment can be connected to a major flood. The adjustment of the tributaries beside the Tisza River also began. In the course of the adjustment works 36 meanders were cut through, and by a 1300 m long cut-through a mouth of more favourable direction was created about 2.5 kilometres downstream from the original one. As a result of the water management practices of the time, the drying of the flood-protected areas of the Great Plain started and the evermore frequent recurrence of groundwater floods (belvíz) called for the development of the irrigation and groundwater flood draining canal system whose beginnings reach back to the 1930s and were more or less completed by the 1950s but whose maintenance and improvement require continuous efforts even today.
