FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK Volume 70 2009 pp. 5 41 In memoriam Dr. Gyula Sáringer (1928 2009) GYULA SÁRINGER, professor emeritus of the Georgikon Faculty of Agriculture, University of Pannonia, leading scientist of applied entomology, academician, member of several Hungarian and foreign learned societies, died unexpectedly on 17 February 2009. The ups and downs of his career show how inhuman political ideologies of the 20th century affected the life of a scientist in an Eastern European country. Dr. GYULA SÁRINGER (1928 2009

6 T. Jermy GYULA SÁRINGER was born on 2 December 1928 in the small Transdanubian village, Magyarszerdahely. His father was a schoolmaster and cantor, who also farmed a few acres of land provided by the Roman Catholic Church. So from the paternal home GYULA drew unshakeable faith, love for books and devotion to agriculture. Excellent professors of the secondary school evoked his interest in bell-letters and philosophy that remained his lifelong hobby. Yet, already as a teenager his life was affected very hard by both Nazi and Communist regimes. After the Nazis took over in Hungary in 1944, Hitler s army called up all men between 14 and 65 for military training under penalty of death. So in December the 16 years old GYULA was transported together with his schoolmates to military camps in Germany. Fortunately, that group of Hungarian youngsters was not involved in actual fighting. When the war ended GYULA succeeded to escape from a transport that was due to some Soviet concentration camp and he returned home by extremely dangerous routes mostly by foot. After finishing secondary school, he was admitted to the Agricultural University at Gödöllõ. His tutor, ADOLF MANNINGER, professor of entomology, wanted to keep the extremely gifted and hard-working young man as assistant at the chair of entomology. However, this was prevented by the staff manager who represented the Communist Party at the University, because GYULA was branded politically by the fact that he had been called up by the Nazis, and that he was in Germany during the war. That calling up of a teenager took place under penalty of death, was not considered as an excuse by the Communist Party. Such branded people were regarded as ideologically dangerous for the young generations, so they were not allowed to participate in teaching. Finally, with professor MANNINGER s help, GYULA could take a job at the Research Institute for Plant Protection in 1952. In 1958 the Ministry of Agriculture founded a special Colorado Potato Beetle Laboratory of the Institute in Keszthely. GYULA worked in the laboratory until its closure in 1977. Although the primary task of the laboratory had been to study the biology and control of the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata), the institute subsequently improved the technical conditions of research and increased the staff, so that the research programme was extended with experimental insect ecology and behaviour, and with plant virology. The years spent in the laboratory were the most productive period of GYULA s scientific career. In collaboration with the author of the present

In memoriam Dr. Gyula Sáringer 7 memoir he studied during the first years the phenology, the local host plants and the ecological factors evoking diapause in the Colorado potato beetle and in the fall webworm moth (Hyphantria cunea). During the following years he revealed the incident of diapause in 23 pest insect species studying the role of the following ecological factors: photoperiod, wavelength of light, temperature, food, generation number, as well as the ontogenetic stage that responds to the photoperiod. Receiving a research grant of the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique in 1964, he worked for one year in the Institut Biologique, Université de Pau (France) directed by professor P. JOURDHEUIL. There he studied in detail the ecological background of diapause in the turnip sawfly (Athalia rosae). His well written and frequently cited publications on diapause contain not only important results of theoretical interest, but these data can be used also for better understanding the population dynamics of pest insects and for forecasting their phenology, that is, they help developing integrated pest management strategies. He proposed an ecotechnical method of control by using light during the scotophase for evoking early diapause in multivoltin insects. GYULA published also a series of important papers on biological control experiments with entomopathogenic nematodes and bacteria. His numerous papers on the life history and control of various insect pests represented highly valuable help in the everyday praxis of plant protection. As a taxonomist of plant hoppers (Homoptera: Cicadoidea) he described two new species of the genus Aphrodes, and he published revisions of the plant hopper species of the Carpathian Basin. As an outstanding expert of insect pest control he was invited by the Lake Balaton Committee as the head of a research group for developing a method of biological mosquito control in the lake area. The method is very efficient and environmentally safe. For various reasons the laboratory had to be closed and demolished in 1977. The Ministry of Agriculture transferred GYULA to the Agricultural University at Keszthely, however, only as a researcher since, for political reasons, he was still not allowed to participate in education as a professor. This transfer was a serious blow to GYULA s scientific career, because for several years there were no suitably equipped laboratories at the university, so he could not continue his previous line of research. Yet GYULA used these years for preparing the second edition of the handbook of horticultural pests (Kertészeti kártevõk, 1982, 1069 pp.) in co-operation with GÉZA

8 T. Jermy BALÁS. The handbook is still used by both teachers and specialists in horticulture as a rich thesaurus of important information. The political change of 1989 was a basic turning point in GYULA s life. He lost his former status of a secondary citizen. In 1990 he was elected member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in 1993 the President of the Hungarian Republic appointed him university professor and rector of the Pannon Agricultural University at Keszthely. Thus, he could begin regular teaching only close to his retirement age, although he was a born pedagogue. He was extremely apt not only in transferring his vast knowledge in entomology and plant protection to his students, but due to his familiarity with philosophy and literature as well as due to his devotion to high ethical standards of life, he also made his students interested in humanities and in human values in general. Although he did not take part in political movements, by list-voting he was elected member of the parliament in 1998. Working during four years as member of the Parliamentary Committee for Education and Science he was successful in proposing several legislative changes, which improved the general conditions of universities and research institutes. His excellence has been recognised by his membership of learned societies such as Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szent István Academy of Sciences, Hungarian Entomological Society (president and life member of the steering committee), Hungarian Ecological Society, Professors World Peace Academy (New York), as well as by several awards such as Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic, Széchenyi Prize, Albert Szent-Györgyi Prize, Gold Medal of the Hungarian Entomological Society, Arnold Ipolyi Award, Suez Canal University (Egypt) Medal. He is survived by his wife, his three children and six grandchildren. He is also survived by many friends, former students and colleagues who drew inspiration from his wisdom, dedication and remarkable kindness. T.
