LAST TIME OUT: BROOKINGS, S.D. (11-9-2007) The South Dakota State Lady Jackrabbits survived a second half Arkansas State rally and went on to defeat the Lady Indians 77-67 in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D. Arkansas State trimmed a 14- point second half lead to two points when junior guard Caroline Starr sank a pair of free throws to make it 62-60 with seven minutes remaining, but South Dakota State outscored ASU 15-7 down the stretch to secure the win. I think both teams were kind of in a feeling-out process tonight, said ASU Head Coach Brian Boyer. The difference was that when it got tight late, they made all the right plays and we did not. I think there were a lot of positives, but the thing we ve got to resolve are those little execution things, especially when the game is on the line. Arkansas State took an early 6-5 lead on a pair of 3-pointers from Starr, but the Jacks responded with a 10-0 run to go up 15-6. Sophomore Ebonie Jefferson stopped the run with a bucket in the paint, but South Dakota State added seven straight to make it 22-8 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the half. The Lady Indians cut the lead back to single digits at 25-16 on an inside bucket from freshman Rachel Baker with 8:35 remaining in the half, and pulled as close as three points when freshman Angie Criner hit back-to-back baskets to trim the Jackrabbit lead to 32-29 with 3:50 left before halftime. South Dakota State outscored the Tribe 9-4 down the stretch to take a 41-33 lead at the break. The Jackrabbits extended their lead back to 14 at 56-42 in the first six minutes of the second half, but a 3-pointer from Baker set an 8-0 run in motion for the Lady Indians that pulled ASU within six at 56-50 with just over 10 minutes remaining. A 25-footer with the shot clock running down from SDSU s Kristen Rotert stopped the Arkansas State run, but the Lady Indians answered again, this time with six straight to cut the Jackrabbit lead to 59-56 with eight minutes to play. Two free throws from Starr at the 7-minute mark cut the South Dakota State lead to a basket at 62-60, but South Dakota State drained six consecutive free throws over the next 90 seconds, and outscored ASU 15-7 in the remainder of the game to seal the victory. ASU PICKED FOURTH IN WEST: The Arkansas State Lady Indians have been picked fourth in the Sun Belt Conference West Division preseason basketball poll, voted on by the league s coaches. The Lady Indians received two first place votes and 58 points overall in the poll, while UALR was the preseason pick to win the division with 76 overall points and six first place votes. Denver was tabbed second, followed by North Texas in third place. Louisiana-Lafayette was picked to finish fifth in the West, followed by Louisiana-Monroe and New Orleans. Western Kentucky received nine first place votes to finish at the top of the polling in the East, followed by Middle Tennessee and Florida International. South Alabama and Troy tied for fourth in the poll, and Florida Atlantic finished sixth. LOCK TO MISS SEASON: Forward Kelsey Lock, the only senior on the Lady Indian roster, will not play this season after suffering what proved to be a career-ending knee injury last year. It was the second major knee injury in as many years for the Republic, Mo. native. Lock averaged 8.7 points for the Lady Indians during the 2005-06 season, starting all 23 games in which she appeared. Last year, Lock averaged 1.7 points in nine appearances, including a season-high nine points in ASU s 80-73 victory over Oklahoma State. As a coaching staff, we totally support Kelsey s decision, said ASU Head Coach Brian Boyer. As much as we would love to have her competing this year for us, we ve also been beside her the last two years to see what she has gone through. This decision did not come as a surprise to us. Kelsey has done a great job of communicating with us throughout this process, and we feel that this is the best decision for her future. We are going to keep Kelsey involved with the program, added Boyer. She is still going to be a valuable part of this team from a leadership and maturity standpoint, but in the end, this is in the best interest for Kelsey physically. Boyer and assistants Tanya Ray, Rebecca Chilton-Peoples, and Carrie Redman have assembled a solid recruiting class to help replace three of the most prolific players ever to wear the scarlet and black of ASU. Gone are three career 1,000- point point scorers who started all 34 games for the Lady Indians a year ago, part of six players lost from last year s team that finished the season at 21-13 overall and advanced to the second round of the Women s National Invitation Tournament. The Lady Indians must replace forward/center Adrianne Davie, who finished her career as ASU s leading shot blocker and rebounder, notching 132 blocks and 1,147 rebounds in her four years at Arkansas State. Davie also finished as the school s third all-time leading scorer with 1,978 points, just ahead of guard Rudy Sims who finished her career in 2007 as the Tribe s fifth all-time scorer with 1,664 points. Sims also finished as ASU s career assists leader with 548, and is fourth on the ASU career steals list with 229. Sims finished fifth on the career 3-point field goals list with 159, just ahead of guard Ali Carter, who finished her career in 2007 sixth on the 3-point field goals list with 149. Carter finished her career with 1,030 points, shot.334 from behind the 3-point arc, and.793 from the free throw line. Davie, Sims and Carter were each named All-Sun Belt Conference, earning the honor a combined eight times. After relying heavily on Davie, Sims, and Carter in recent seasons, this year s Lady Indian team expects to be more balanced, more athletic, and play with more speed. Seven new players join one returning senior, three returning juniors, and four returning sophomores to make up the 2007-08 Lady Indian roster. Guard/forward Kelsey Lock (6-0, Republic, Mo.) returns as ASU s only senior, although she will not play after suffering two major knee injuries over the past two seasons. After starting 23 games for the Lady Indians in 2005-06, Lock suffered a knee injury and missed the remainder of the season and the beginning of the 2006-07 while rehabbing the injury. She played in nine games midway through last season before re-aggravating the injury and being sidelined once again. Forward Ashley Anderson (6-2, Cabot, Ark.), guard Brittney Hiles (5-7, Baton Rouge, La.), and guard Caroline Starr (5-10, Benton, Ark.) make up the Lady Indians returning junior class. Anderson started 26 of ASU s 34 games last season, averaging 2.7 rebounds and 4.2 points. She scored a career high 16 points in ASU s 67-54 victory at Missouri State last year. Hiles has been a tough defender for the Tribe, and played in all 34 of ASU s games last season, drawing three starts. She averaged 2.0 points and 1.6 rebounds in 2006-07, to go along with 25 steals. Starr is ASU s leading returning 3- point shooter, connecting on 41 shots from behind the arc in 2006-07. She scored a career-high 23 points to help the Lady Indians overcome a 21-point deficit and rally to defeat NCAA Tournament participant Louisiana-Lafayette 77-61 last season. She recorded a 4-for-4 3-point shooting night in an 80-64 victory over Louisiana-Monroe, the best performance from behind the arc in ASU history, and averaged 7.4 points and 3.5 rebounds on the year. Sophomores Ebonie Jefferson (5-9, Laurel, Miss.), Jazmine Taylor (5-8, Memphis, Tenn.), Lyndsay Schlup (6-1, California, Mo.), and Veronica Smith (5-10, East St. Louis, Ill.) return 2007-08 LADY INDIAN BASKETBALL 5

with a year of experience under their belts. Jefferson, a guard who played in 19 games for the Tribe last season, looks to play an expanded role after averaging 1.1 points and 0.6 rebounds per game last season. She scored a personal best six points in the season opener at Charlotte last year. Taylor played in all 34 games at guard as a true freshman a year ago, starting in three. She averaged 1.3 points and 1.2 rebounds during her freshman season, scoring a career-high six points in an 87-55 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Schlup saw significant playing time at forward last season, logging time in all 34 games, while starting seven. She averaged 3.7 points and 3.4 rebounds, scoring in double figures in four games. Smith played in 28 games for the Lady Indians last year, and came on strong as ASU entered post-season play. She scored in double-figures in all three of the Lady Indians Sun Belt Conference Tournament games, and averaged 3.0 points and 2.1 rebounds per game on the season. Pospisil started all 36 games for Kirkwood, averaging seven points and seven rebounds for an Eagle team that defeated its opponents by an average of 42.8 points per game. Head Coach Brian Boyer Through eight seasons as head coach at Arkansas State University, Brian Boyer s name has become synonymous with success and the women s basketball program. Entering his ninth season as head coach of the Lady Indians, Boyer has climbed to second place on the ASU career win chart with a record of 132-109. Under Boyer s guidance, the Lady Indians have reached the Women s National Invitation Tournament four times, including three of the past four seasons. He led the Lady Indians to the 2003-04 Sun Belt East Division Championship, the program has produced 16 All-Sun Belt Conference players with Boyer at the helm, and Boyer was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year following the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. His 66 career Sun Belt Conference victories heading into the 2007-08 season rank him sixth all-time in career conference wins. Last season, the Lady Indians finished 21-13, advanced to the second round of the WNIT before falling to eventual tournament runner-up Wisconsin and continued to build on their already-impressive home record with a 14-2 mark at the ASU Convocation Center. The Lady Indians posted home victories over NCAA Tournament participants Oklahoma State and Louisiana- Lafayette, Southeastern Conference member Alabama and WNIT participants South Dakota State and Murray State. In all, 14 of the Lady Indians 34 games during the 2006-07 season were against teams that played in the NCAA or WNIT tournaments. The 2006-07 Lady Indians also reached the 10-victory milestone quicker than any other team in ASU history, picking up their 10th win of the season Jan. 3, 2007, and their 21-win total equaled the highest in Boyer s eight seasons. Under Boyer s guidance, several individual records fell during the 2006-07 season as well. Seniors Adrianne Davie and Rudy Sims rewrote the Lady Indian record books, with Davie shattering the career blocked shots record with 132 and the career rebounding record with 1,147. Sims set a new mark in career assists with 548, and became the first ASU player in over a decade to record a triple-double when she scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out 10 assists in a 65-58 overtime victory at Louisiana-Lafayette. Davie was named All-Sun Belt Conference for the fourth straight season, while Sims earned the honor for the third straight year. During the 2005-06 season, the Lady Indians posted a 15-15 overall record against a schedule that included nine NCAA Tournament teams and three that participated in the WNIT. The Tribe advanced to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, and Davie earned first-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors for the third straight season. Davie also joined the ASU 1,000- point club, along with Sims and senior Amber Abraham. In the 2004-05 season, ASU put together a programbest 10-game Sun Belt Conference winning streak, part of an 11-game win streak that was the fourth longest in Lady Indian history. The Lady Indians finished the season 21-11 overall and in second place in the Sun Belt East Division at 11-3, giving Boyer his first 20-win season as head coach. The Tribe advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT, defeating SEC powers Mississippi State and Arkansas along the way. The second round victory over Arkansas was played in front of a Convocation Center record crowd of 10, 892. The team s success earned Boyer his second straight Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year Award. 2007-08 LADY INDIAN BASKETBALL 7

Boyer joined former Lady Indian coach Jerry Ann Winters as the only two ASU women s basketball coaches to win back to- back coach of the year honors. Davie, Sims and Carter all earned All-Sun Belt honors following the 2004-05 season, marking the first time in Lady Indian history that three players earned all-conference honors in a single season. The 2003-04 season culminated with the program s first-ever regular season conference championship and a return to the WNIT. The Lady Indians finished 19-10 overall and 10-4 in league play, earning a share of the Sun Belt East division title as they posted one of the top turnarounds in Division I, picking up seven more wins than the previous season. ASU s 19 victories that season were the most since the 1997-98 season, sparked in part by the best start in ASU women s basketball history a seven-game win streak to open the season. The strong start carried over into Sun Belt play as the Lady Indians held the top spot in the East division from start to finish. Davie earned honorable mention all-conference honors as a true freshman, and Boyer was rewarded with his first conference Coach of the Year Award. The 2002-03 season capped a pair of rebuilding years and resulted in a strong finish and a trip to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. In his first season as head coach of the Lady Indians, Boyer led ASU to its first-ever Top 25 national ranking, 18 victories and a trip to the WNIT. The Tribe s 18 victories gave Boyer the most wins by a first-year coach at ASU since Sara Wooley won 19 games in her first season in 1979. The Lady Indians opened the season by winning 10 of their first 11 games, including road wins over Southern Miss and nationally-ranked Kansas, giving ASU a No. 25 ranking in the Associated Press poll the following week. The Tribe finished the season at 18-12 overall, ending the year with the program s second straight invitation to the WNIT. Boyer came to ASU in 1995 spending four seasons as an assistant for former head coach Jeff Mittie, who is now the head coach at TCU. A graduate of Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Mo. with a bachelor's degree in education, Boyer was an assistant coach for the men's program for six seasons, including the last three, which he spent as an assistant with the women's program as well. As an assistant to the men's team, Missouri Western was an NCAA Division II Tournament participant five years (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1995) and won two conference championships. The team made the Sweet 16 in 1990. As a women's assistant, Boyer and Missouri Western made two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in 1995 and the Elite Eight the previous season. The team went 31-3 in 1995 and made it to the Final Eight of the national tournament. It also went undefeated through its MIAA schedule at 16-0. In 1994, the team finished third in the nation, losing in a national semifinal contest and finishing with a 29-3 overall mark. In his four seasons at Arkansas State as an assistant coach, Boyer and the Lady Indians earned a 75-42 mark. The 1998-99 team went 18-14 with a trip to the Women's NIT. In the process, ASU earned wins over nationally- ranked Virginia and Kansas. The Lady Indians won 20 games in back-to-back seasons in the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. The 1997 team opened the season with a victory over nationally-ranked Illinois and had a 12-game winning streak during the season, the second longest in school history. The 1998 squad knocked off nationally-ranked Western Kentucky at the Convocation Center and came within four points of scoring an upset over national power Louisiana Tech at home as well. In his first season at ASU, the Lady Indians won 17 games, despite having just seven scholarship players. Boyer prepped at Scotland County High School in Memphis, Mo. and graduated from there in 1988. He is married to the former Rhonda Lane of Marked Tree. She is a graduate of ASU. 2007-08 LADY INDIAN BASKETBALL 8
