The Golden Panthers State Lady Indians play host to the Golden Panthers of Florida International University Jan. 23 in a Sun Belt Conference matchup set for 7:05 p.m. at the ASU Convocation Center. Every ASU Lady Indian basketball game can be heard live on travel to Jonesboro at 7-11 on the year and 3-4 in Sun Belt East Division play. Florida International is in a fourth-place tie with South Alabama in the SBC East, four games behind division leader Western Kentucky at Earl FM in Northeast Arkansas. THE TEAMS: Arkansas State will be playing its second consecutive game at the Convo when it plays host to FIU Wednesday night. At 6-3 in the Sun Belt West Division, the Lady Indians are one-half game behind league leaders Louisiana-Monroe and UALR, which are both THE SERIES: Florida International holds a 13-4 series advantage of the Lady Indians, including a 5-3 series lead at the ASU Convocation Center. Florida International has won the last three meetings between the two teams, including win last season in Miami, and a win over the Lady Indians during the season, the last time the two teams met in Jonesboro. The last time the Lady Indians defeated FIU, Arkansas State swept the Golden Panthers in the season, winning an overtime battle in Miami before winning in Jonesboro in the second meeting of the season. THE COACHES: Arkansas State Head Coach Brian Boyer is in his ninth season as the Lady Indian head coach. The Lady Indians finished the season at overall, and advanced to the second round of the WNIT. Now in her 29th season as head coach at Florida International, Cindy Russo has directed the FIU program to a record of over that time. In 31 years of coaching, Russo s record stands at HOME SWEET HOME: The Lady Indians have won over 71 percent (83-33) of their games at the ASU Convocation Center under Head Coach Brian Boyer. Over the last four years, the Tribe has lost just 10 times on its home court, posting a winning percentage of.846 during that time (55-10). The Lady Indians have won 21 of the last 24 games at the ASU Convocation Center. In rare back-to-back home losses, the Lady Indians dropped consecutive home games this season, losing to Indiana State and Charlotte. The losses to Indiana State and Charlotte were the first consecutive losses at home since ASU lost to New Mexico State and Rice during the season. The Lady Indians have never lost three consecutive games at the ASU Convocation Center. 3 Brian Boyer, and has won four straight. SUCCESS IN SBC OPENERS: Since joining the Sun Belt Conference prior to the season, the Lady Indians are 11-6 all-time in SBC openers. Under Head Coach Brian Boyer, the Tribe is 6-3, with victories in five of the last six league debuts. Arkansas State has opened Sun Belt Conference play eight times at home, and boasts a 7-1 record in those games. ASU s only loss when opening the SBC season at home was a setback to Louisiana Tech in the season. SCOUTING FIU: Senior first-team preseason All-Sun Belt Conference guard LaQuetta Ferguson leads the Panthers in scoring with a 16.7 points-per-game average. Thirdteam all-conference pick Iva Ciglar adds 10.6 points per game while distributing a team-high 96 assists on the season. The Golden Panthers are last in the league in scoring offense at 59.4 points per game, just behind ASU at 59.8, and are 12th in the league with a.362 shooting percentage, just ahead of the Lady Indians, who shoot.361. FINDING THE RIGHT MIX: Through 19 games this season, Lady Indian Head Coach Brian Boyer has used 11 different player combinations in ASU s starting lineup. Sophomore Jazmine Taylor is the only Lady Indian to have started every game, and the combination of Taylor, Ebonie Jefferson, Veronica Smith, Caroline Starr, and Shay Scott has been the most common mix, starting in eight games. FIU PICKING POCKETS: Averaging steals per game, the Lady Indians are ranked second in the Sun Belt Conference, and 27th nationally. ASU sophomore guard Jazmine Taylor ranks second in the league at 2.25 steals per game, freshman guard Angie Criner is 11th at 1.80, and sophomore guard Ebonie Jefferson is 14th at DOUBLE DOUBLE-DOUBLE: When Shay Scott and Ebonie Jefferson both recorded a double-double Jan. 9 in ASU s win over North Texas, it marked the first time in over a year that two Lady Indians posted a double-double in the same game. The last time it happened, Rudy Sims and Adrianne Davie accomplished the feat in a win over ULL Dec. 16, Sims finished the game with a triple-double, chalking up 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, overshadowing the fifth double-double of the season by senior center Jefferson Adrianne Davie, who finished the game with 26 points and 15 rebounds. CLEANING THE GLASS: Arkansas State leads the Sun Belt Conference in offensive rebounding in league games, and is second in the conference in all games played. Additionally, freshman Shay Scott leads the league in offensive rebounding in Sun Belt games, averaging 4.56 offensive rebounds per night. Scott is second in the league in overall rebounding in league games, averaging 10.0 rebounds per game. As a team, the Lady Indians average offensive boards in all games, and offensive rebounds in Sun Belt Conference play. RAISING THE BAR vs. TROY: Two games after scoring a career-high 10 points in ASU s Jan. 14 win over Middle Tennessee, ASU sophomore guard Jazmine Taylor topped that number with 11 points in the Lady Indians win over Troy. Taylor also hit a career-high five field goals in the game...sophomore guard Veronica Smith hit a career-high five free throws on a career-high six attempts...as a team ASU held Troy to just four assists, the lowest of any opponent this season...for the second time this season ASU did not allow a blocked shot by Troy in the Jan. 20 game. HEATING UP: After struggling offensively in the two games leading up to Louisiana-Lafayette, the Lady Indians posted a season high 51.9 percent shooting (27-52) in their road victory over ULL Jan. 3. The Lady Indians also shot a season-high 53.8 percent from three-point range (7-13), and handed out a seasonhigh 18 assists. Four players chalked up double-figure scoring numbers in the win at ULL, and all shot 50 percent or better from the floor. Sophomore guard Veronica Smith led the way with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting, junior guard Caroline Starr was 4-of-7 from the floor, all from three-point range to finish with 12 points, freshman forward Shay Scott was a perfect 5-of-5 on the night, scoring 10 points, and sophomore guard Ebonie Jefferson hit 4-of-8 shots to finish with 10 points. GETTING DEFENSIVE: Arkansas State held UAPB to just 17 points in the first half of the Lady Indians victory over the Golden Lions Dec. 13. The 17 points scored by UAPB was the fewest given up in a half this season by the Lady Indians. The figure was just four points shy of the Convocation Center record, set Jan. 9, 1993 when the Lady Indians held Texas Pan-American to 14 points in the first half of a ASU victory. JEFFERSON ON A ROLL: Sophomore guard Ebonie Jefferson continues to be an impact player as the season progresses. After scoring a career-high nine points in the season opener against South Dakota State, Jefferson matched the effort against Washington, then recorded her first career double-figure game with 13 points against Brigham Young. Jefferson outdid herself in back-to-back games against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Florida Atlantic, chalking up 16 points against UAPB and 20 in the league opener against FAU. Against UAPB, she narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds, along with three steals in just 20 minutes of action. Jefferson achieved her first double-double Jan. 9 against North Texas, finishing the game with 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Jefferson has now scored 10 or more points in eight games this season. GREAT SCOTT: Freshman forward Shay Scott has scored in double figures in 10 of the last 12 games for the Lady Indians, and has pulled down double-figure rebounds in ASU s last five games. In the last six games, Scott has ripped down 63 rebounds and has posted a doubledouble in four of the last five games for the Lady Indians, giving her five double-doubles in her short career. During the past week s action, Scott came within one point of her career high twice, scoring 13 points against both Middle Tennessee and Troy. She also logged a career-high LADY INDIAN BASKETBALL 5

6 minutes against Troy. JAZZIN IT UP: Sophomore point guard Jazmine Taylor continues to be productive for the Lady Indians in her role as starting point guard. Taylor is the only Lady Indian to have started every game this season, and set a new personal career high with six steals in the Tribe s win over Missouri Taylor State Nov. 20. Taylor scored in double figures for the first time in her career when she scored 10 points against Middle Tennessee Jan. 14, then raised her career high to 11 in ASU s win over Troy Jan. 20. SHOOTING STARR: After hitting just three 3-pointers in ASU s first three games, junior guard Caroline Starr caught fire in the second half against Missouri State Nov. 20. Starr sank two from long range in the first minute of the second half, then added another later in the game to give the Lady Indians their Starr first 20-point lead in the win. Starr got hot again in the second half of ASU s Nov. 25 game at Washington, draining five 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes to finish with a season-high 17 points. CRINER DELIVERS: In her first start as a Lady Indian, true freshman Angie Criner led all scorers with 17 points in ASU s victory over Alabama Nov. 18. Criner shot 6-of-11 from the field, 2-of-2 from behind the 3-point line, and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Criner also added four steals and six rebounds to the box score in 25 minutes of play. Her hot shooting continued against Missouri State Nov. 20 as she hit 6-of-11 shots from the field, including a 2-of-3 effort from 3-point land. Criner Criner led the Lady Indians with 14 points in the game. The freshman from Jenks, Okla. came through again for the Lady Indians in the Nov Washington Husky Classic, scoring 19 points in ASU s opening-round victory over Weber State, and 12 in the Lady Indians loss to Washington in the championship game. Criner was named to the alltournament team following the Nov. 25 final. In ASU s Jan. 12 loss at Louisiana-Monroe, Criner topped her career steals mark with five thefts in the game. SUCCESS VS. The 6-2 freshman from North Little Rock has grabbed 57 boards in the last five outings. Troy never led in the game and forward Kylie Morrissy was the only Trojan player to score early on, putting her team s first nine points on the board. Troy was able to hit only seven of its 30 shots from the field, while the Lady Indians connected on 12 of their 23. Morrissy scored 17 points with nine rebounds, while teammate Amy Lewis scored 18 points to lead all players enroute to shooting 30.2 percent on the night. ASU took a lead at the half. It marked the fifth time this season that the Lady Indian defense held an opponent to 20 points or less in a half. Defensively, holding them to 18 points was certainly a big accomplishment, said Boyer. LOCK TO MISS SEASON: Forward Kelsey Lock, the only senior on the Lady Indian roster, will not play this season after suffering what proved to be a career-ending knee injury last year. It was the second major knee injury in as many years for the Republic, Mo. native. Lock Lock averaged 8.7 points for the Lady Indians LADY INDIAN BASKETBALL 7

8 during the season, starting all 23 games in which she appeared. Last year, Lock averaged 1.7 points in nine appearances, including a season-high nine points in ASU s victory over Oklahoma State. As a coaching staff, we totally support Kelsey s decision, said ASU Head Coach Brian Boyer. As much as we would love to have her competing this year for us, we ve also been beside her the last two years to see what she has gone through. This decision did not come as a surprise to us. Kelsey has done a great job of communicating with us throughout this process, and we feel that this is the best decision for her future. We are going to keep Kelsey involved with the program, added Boyer. She is still going to be a valuable part of this team from a leadership and maturity standpoint, but in the end, this is in the best interest for Kelsey physically. HURST HURTING: Freshman guard Shania Ne-Ne Hurst will not play this season after suffering a torn ACL in her left knee during ASU s exhibition victory over Ouachita Baptist Nov. 5. Hurst scored 16 points in the Lady Indians win over Hurst Harding in the Tribe s opening exhibition game. HOT SPRINGS NAMED FUTURE SITE FOR SBC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS: The Sun Belt Conference announced at its annual media days that Hot Springs, Ark., renowned for its appeal as a great tourist destination across the state and the country, was selected by the Sun Belt Conference Executive Committee as the host for league s annual men s and women s basketball tournaments from DUNN DEAL: The Arkansas State Lady Indian basketball program announced Nov. 14 that Kansas City, Mo., standout Elyseia Dunn has signed a national letter of intent to continue her basketball career at ASU. Dunn, a 6-1 forward, played three years at Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City, but will compete for Milestone Christian Academy in Kansas City during her senior season. Dunn averaged double figures in scoring each of her three seasons at Pembroke Hill, with a team-high average of 15.5 points per game last season. She has also averaged just over eight rebounds per game during her career, finishing as Pembroke s leading rebounder each of the last three years. As a staff, we are very excited about Elyseia, said ASU Head Coach Brian Boyer. In all of recruiting, you start out early with a tier of players and in all honesty, Elyseia was the number one recruit that we were after since her junior year. That s how highly we think of Elyseia. In a year where we have limited scholarships to give out, we shot as high as we could, added Boyer. And we are very grateful that Elyseia has committed to Arkansas State because this fills a huge need for our program. Dunn is a McDonald s All-American nominee, a Sporting News High School All-American Honorable Mention, and was invited to compete for the 2007 USA Athletes Team in Germany. Pembroke Hill won back-to-back state championships in 2005 and 2006, and Dunn was the most valuable player of the 2006 Class 3A Missouri State Championship Game. A twotime all-state selection, Dunn was also nominated for the Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year Award. She played for head coach Mark Spigarelli at Pembroke Hill, and will play for head coach Catrina Johnigan at Milestone Christian Academy. She was also a member of the AAU Wichita Spooks, playing under coach Kim Lassley. Dunn is the daughter of Donna Dunn, and has been trained and coached by Victor Williams. HENKE INKS WITH ASU: Arkansas State Head Coach Brian Boyer announced Monday that 6 4 center Linsay Henke has signed a national letter of intent to continue her basketball career at ASU. Henke, a senior at Blair Oaks High School in Jefferson City, Mo., is a two-time all conference and all district, and all state selection for the Lady Falcons. Henke averaged 12.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, and shot 60.3 percent from the field as a junior, leading Blair Oaks to a third-place finish in Class 3A. During the season, Henke averaged 10.6 points and 7.5 rebounds and led the Lady Falcons to the Class 3A state runner-up finish. She finished with 108 blocked shots in each of the last two seasons. Linsay is a great complement to our first sign, Elyseia Dunn, said Boyer. She has very good skills for her size, and she is very athletic for a 6 4 player. Certainly, a need that we had to address this year was adding more strength and more size on our front line, and in signing Linsay, we did that without sacrificing any speed and athletic ability. Linsay is the daughter of Tom and Kathy Henke, and plays for head coach Leroy Bernskoetter at Blair Oaks. 9 Head Coach Brian Boyer Through eight seasons as head coach at Arkansas State University, Brian Boyer s name has become synonymous with success and the women s basketball program. Entering his ninth season as head coach of the Lady Indians, Boyer has climbed to second place on the ASU career win chart with a record of Under Boyer s guidance, the Lady Indians have reached the Women s National Invitation Tournament four times, including three of the past four seasons. He led the Lady Indians to the Sun Belt East Division Championship, the program has produced 16 All-Sun Belt Conference players with Boyer at the helm, and Boyer was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year following the and seasons. His 66 career Sun Belt Conference victories heading into the season rank him sixth all-time in career conference wins. Last season, the Lady Indians finished 21-13, advanced to the second round of the WNIT before falling to eventual tournament runner-up Wisconsin and continued to build on their already-impressive home record with a 14-2 mark at the ASU Convocation Center. The Lady Indians posted home victories over NCAA Tournament participants Oklahoma State and Louisiana- Lafayette, Southeastern Conference member Alabama and WNIT participants South Dakota State and Murray State. In all, 14 of the Lady Indians 34 games during the season were against teams that played in the NCAA or WNIT tournaments. The Lady Indians also reached the 10-victory milestone quicker than any other team in ASU history, picking up their 10th win of the season Jan. 3, 2007, and their 21-win total equaled the highest in Boyer s eight seasons. Under Boyer s guidance, several individual records fell during the season as well. Seniors Adrianne Davie and Rudy Sims rewrote the Lady Indian record books, with Davie shattering the career blocked shots record with 132 and the career rebounding record with 1,147. Sims set a new mark in career assists with 548, and became the first ASU player in over a decade to record a triple-double when she scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out 10 assists in a overtime victory at Louisiana-Lafayette. Davie was named All-Sun Belt Conference for the fourth straight season, while Sims earned the honor for the third straight year. Davie also joined the ASU 1,000- point club, along with Sims and senior Amber Abraham. In the season, ASU put together a programbest 10-game Sun Belt Conference winning streak, part of an 11-game win streak that was the fourth longest in Lady Indian history. The Lady Indians finished the season overall and in second place in the Sun Belt East Division at 11-3, giving Boyer his first 20-win season as head coach. The Tribe advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT, defeating SEC powers Mississippi State and Arkansas along the way. The second round victory over Arkansas was played in front of a Convocation Center record crowd of 10, 892. 10 Boyer joined former Lady Indian coach Jerry Ann Winters as the only two ASU women s basketball coaches to win back to- back coach of the year honors. Davie, Sims and Carter all earned All-Sun Belt honors following the season, marking the first time in Lady Indian history that three players earned all-conference honors in a single season. The season culminated with the program s first-ever regular season conference championship and a return to the WNIT. The Lady Indians finished overall and 10-4 in league play, earning a share of the Sun Belt East division title as they posted one of the top turnarounds in Division I, picking up seven more wins than the previous season. ASU s 19 victories that season were the most since the season, sparked in part by the best start in ASU women s basketball history a seven-game win streak to open the season. The strong start carried over into Sun Belt play as the Lady Indians held the top spot in the East division from start to finish. Davie earned honorable mention all-conference honors as a true freshman, and Boyer was rewarded with his first conference Coach of the Year Award. The season capped a pair of rebuilding years and resulted in a strong finish and a trip to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. In his first season as head coach of the Lady Indians, Boyer led ASU to its first-ever Top 25 national ranking, 18 victories and a trip to the WNIT. The Tribe s 18 victories gave Boyer the most wins by a first-year coach at ASU since Sara Wooley won 19 games in her first season in The Lady Indians opened the season by winning 10 of their first 11 games, including road wins over Southern Miss and nationally-ranked Kansas, giving ASU a No. 25 ranking in the Associated Press poll the following week. The Tribe finished the season at overall, ending the year with the program s second straight invitation to the WNIT. Boyer came to ASU in 1995 spending four seasons as an assistant for former head coach Jeff Mittie, who is now the head coach at TCU. A graduate of Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Mo. with a bachelor's degree in education, Boyer was an assistant coach for the men's program for six seasons, including the last three, which he spent as an assistant with the women's program as well. As an assistant to the men's team, Missouri Western was an NCAA Division II Tournament participant five years (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1995) and won two conference championships. The team made the Sweet 16 in As a women's assistant, Boyer and Missouri Western made two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in 1995 and the Elite Eight the previous season. The team went 31-3 in 1995 and made it to the Final Eight of the national tournament. It also went undefeated through its MIAA schedule at In 1994, the team finished third in the nation, losing in a national semifinal contest and finishing with a 29-3 overall mark. In his four seasons at Arkansas State as an assistant coach, Boyer and the Lady Indians earned a mark. The team went with a trip to the Women's NIT. In the process, ASU earned wins over nationally- ranked Virginia and Kansas. The Lady Indians won 20 games in back-to-back seasons in the and seasons. The 1997 team opened the season with a victory over nationally-ranked Illinois and had a 12-game winning streak during the season, the second longest in school history. The 1998 squad knocked off nationally-ranked Western Kentucky at the Convocation Center and came within four points of scoring an upset over national power Louisiana Tech at home as well.
