THE TEAMS: Arkansas State will take the court Thursday night at 4-2 overall after finishing as runners-up in last weekend s University of Washington Husky Classic. The Lady Indians had a four-game win streak snapped when they were defeated in the finals of the tournament by host Washington, Oklahoma State enters Thursday s game with a perfect 6-0 record, winning by an average of 31.8 points per game. Although the Cowgirls are not ranked in the top 25 in either of the major polls, they are close. Oklahoma State is at the top of the others receiving votes list in the Associated Press poll, which would rank the Cowgirls at No. 26. The Cowgirls are second on the others receiving votes list in the ESPN/USA Today poll, which would make OSU No. 27 if the poll were extended. THE SERIES: Oklahoma State leads the all-time series at 4-2, but Arkansas State has won the last two meetings. After starting the season 8-0 last year, Oklahoma State traveled to Jonesboro and was defeated by the Lady Indians, and ASU defeated the Cowgirls when the two teams met during the season. Boyer holds a career record of at ASU, and has directed the Lady Indians to the Women s National Invitation Tournament four times, including three of the past four years. The Lady Indians finished the season at overall, and advanced to the second round of the WNIT. After going 6-22 in his first season at Stillwater, Budke turned the program around last season as the Cowgirls finished and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Budke now stands at at Oklahoma State, and overall. SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS: Three players are averaging double figure scoring for the Cowgirls, led by sophomore guard Andrea Riley, who averages 22.2 points per game and was named the Big 12 Player of the Week Monday afternoon. Riley averaged 30 points, five rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game for OSU in victories over UC Riverside and Fresno State last week. Senior center Maria Cordero adds 14.3 points and 6.8 rebound per game, and has hit 8-of-24 3-pointers on the season. Senior guard Danielle Green is also averaging double figures at 11.3 points per game, while junior forward Shaunte Smith adds 8.8 points and a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game. The Cowgirls average 49.7 rebounds per contest, and are outrebounding their opponents by an average of 14.7 boards per game. OSU also averages 13.2 steals and 5.0 blocked shots per game. SUCCESS VS. THE SEC: Following its victory at Alabama Nov. 18, ASU is 5-1 vs. teams from the Southeastern Conference under Head Coach Brian Boyer, winning the last five matchups. After losing to Ole Miss during the season, ASU defeated Ole Miss in , then defeated Mississippi State and Arkansas in the Women s National Invitation Tournament in the season. In the season, the Lady Indians opened the season with a win over Alabama. Over the last four years, the Tribe has lost just eight times on its home court, posting a winning percentage of.859 during that time (49-8). The Lady Indians are currently riding a 7-game win streak at the ASU Convocation Center, and have won 15 of the last 16 games on their home court. ASU s last loss at home was a setback against Western Kentucky Jan. 24, Since then, the Lady Indians have defeated Florida Atlantic, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe twice, and Murray State in the first round of last year s WNIT, with Brigham Young and Missouri State losing in Jonesboro this season. MORE SUCCESS AT HOME: Following the Tribe s Nov. 13, victory over BYU, ASU is now 6-2 in home openers under Head Coach Brian Boyer, and have won four straight. CRINER DELIVERS: In her first start as a Lady Indian, true freshman Angie Criner led all scorers with 17 points in ASU s victory over Alabama Nov. 18. Criner shot 6-of-11 from the field, 2-of-2 from behind the 3-point line, and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Criner also added four steals and six rebounds to the box score in 25 minutes of play. Her shot shooting continued against Missouri State Nov. 20 as she hit 6-of-11 shots from the field, including a 2-of- 3 effort from 3- point land. Criner led the Lady Indians with 14 points in the game. The freshman from Jenks Oklahoma Criner came through again for the Lady Indians in the Nov Washington Husky Classic, scoring 19 points in ASU s opening-round victory over Weber State, and 12 in the Lady Indians loss to Washington in the championship game. Criner was named to the all-tournament team following Sunday s final. JAZZIN IT UP: Sophomore point guard Jazmine Taylor continues to be productive for the Lady Indians in her role as starting point guard. Taylor is the only Lady Indian to have started every game this season, and last week set a new personal career high with six steals in the Tribe s win over Missouri Taylor State. In ASU s three games last week, Taylor logged 14 assists and 11 steals while adding 14 points and 12 rebounds. SHOOTING STARR: After hitting just three 3-pointers in ASU s first three games, junior guard Caroline Starr caught fire in the second half against Missouri State Nov. 20. Starr sank two from long range in the first minute of the second half, then added another later in Starr the game to give the Lady Indians their first 20-point lead in the win. Starr got hot again in the second half of ASU s Nov. 25 game at Washington, draining five 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes to finish with a season-high 17 points. EB & FLOW: Sophomore guard Ebonie Jefferson got into the flow of the game in the Nov. 9 season opener at South Dakota State, setting new career highs in points, field goals and field goal attempts. Jefferson scored nine points on 4-of-6 Jefferson shooting and also notched the first steal and assist of her career. Jefferson s strong play continued against Brigham Young as she again scored a career high - finishing with 13 points. Jefferson also grabbed a career-high six rebounds against the Cougars. HURST HURTING: Freshman guard Shania Ne-Ne Hurst will not play this season after suffering a torn ACL in her left knee during ASU s exhibition victory over Ouachita Baptist Nov. 5. Hurst scored 16 points in the Lady Indians win over Harding in the Tribe s opening exhibition game. LAST TIME OUT: SEATTLE, Wash. ( ) The Washington Huskies (3-4, 0-0) survived a late Arkansas State rally and held on to defeat the Lady Indians Sunday afternoon in the finals of the Husky Classic at Bank of America Arena in Seattle, Wash. Arkansas State (4-2, 0-0) trailed by as much as 21 in the second half before cutting the Husky lead to six. The Lady Indians forced 10 turnovers in the second half, turned the ball over just five times, and got 17 second-half points from junior Caroline Starr to fuel the comeback, but Washington enjoyed a 24-3 advantage in free throw attempts and that proved to be the difference. The Lady Indians made the most of each of their attempts at the line, hitting all three, while Washington sank 17 of its 24 attempts. 6 State began to make a move midway through the period. The Lady Indians cut the Washington lead to single digits on a steal and layup from sophomore Ebonie Jefferson with 9:12 to play. Starr started the ASU rally with a 3-pointer with 11:27 remaining, and ASU followed with a basket by sophomore Lyndsay Schlup, and five straight from Jefferson to cut the Washington lead to Starr hit another 3-pointer at the 5:30 mark to make it a game before the Huskies stopped their scoring drought with back-to-back baskets from freshman Katelan Redmon to push the lead back to 10 at with 4:56 to play. Starr answered with another from outside the arc on the next Lady Indian possession to cut the Washington lead to with just under three minutes to play, but seven points was as close as the Lady Indians could get. Starr led the Tribe with 17 points, followed by Criner with 12 points and three steals. Jefferson added nine points, Ashley Anderson finished with eight, Veronica Smith scored three points, and Jazmine Taylor, Rachel Baker, Brittney Hiles, Shay Scott and Schlup all added two points each. Whitcomb led Washington with 19 points. Criner was named to the alltournament team along with Idaho s Hannah Wells, Weber State s Sara Tuomi, Whitcomb, and Emily Florence of Washington. ASU PICKED FOURTH IN WEST: The Arkansas State Lady Indians have been picked fourth in the Sun Belt Conference West Division preseason basketball poll, voted on by the league s coaches. The Lady Indians received two first place votes and 58 points overall in the poll, while UALR was the preseason pick to win the division with 76 overall points and six first place votes. Denver was tabbed second, followed by North Texas in third place. Louisiana-Lafayette was picked to finish fifth in the West, followed by Louisiana-Monroe and New Orleans. Western Kentucky received nine first place votes to finish at the top of the polling in the East, followed by Middle Tennessee and Florida International. South Alabama and Troy tied for fourth in the poll, and Florida Atlantic finished sixth. LOCK TO MISS SEASON: Forward Kelsey Lock, the only senior on the Lady Indian roster, will not play this season after suffering what proved to be a career-ending knee injury last year. It was the second major knee injury in as many years for the Republic, Mo. native. Lock averaged 8.7 points for the Lady Indians during the season, starting all 23 games in which she appeared. Last year, Lock averaged 1.7 points in nine appearances, including a season-high Lock nine points in ASU s victory over Oklahoma State. As a coaching staff, we totally support Kelsey s decision, said ASU Head Coach Brian Boyer. As much as we would love to have her competing this year for us, we ve also been beside her the last two years to see what she has gone through. This decision did not come as a surprise to us. Kelsey has done a great job of communicating with us throughout this process, and we feel that this is the best decision for her future. We are going to keep Kelsey involved with the program, added Boyer. She is still going to be a valuable part of this team from a leadership and maturity standpoint, but in the end, this is in the best interest for Kelsey physically. HOT SPRINGS NAMED FUTURE SITE FOR SBC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS: The Sun Belt Conference announced at its annual media days that Hot Springs, Ark., renowned for its appeal as a great tourist destination across the state and the country, was selected by the Sun Belt Conference Executive Committee as the host for league s annual men s and women s basketball tournaments from LADY INDIAN BASKETBALL 6

7 Head Coach Brian Boyer Through eight seasons as head coach at Arkansas State University, Brian Boyer s name has become synonymous with success and the women s basketball program. Entering his ninth season as head coach of the Lady Indians, Boyer has climbed to second place on the ASU career win chart with a record of Under Boyer s guidance, the Lady Indians have reached the Women s National Invitation Tournament four times, including three of the past four seasons. He led the Lady Indians to the Sun Belt East Division Championship, the program has produced 16 All-Sun Belt Conference players with Boyer at the helm, and Boyer was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year following the and seasons. His 66 career Sun Belt Conference victories heading into the season rank him sixth all-time in career conference wins. Last season, the Lady Indians finished 21-13, advanced to the second round of the WNIT before falling to eventual tournament runner-up Wisconsin and continued to build on their already-impressive home record with a 14-2 mark at the ASU Convocation Center. The Lady Indians posted home victories over NCAA Tournament participants Oklahoma State and Louisiana- Lafayette, Southeastern Conference member Alabama and WNIT participants South Dakota State and Murray State. In all, 14 of the Lady Indians 34 games during the season were against teams that played in the NCAA or WNIT tournaments. The Lady Indians also reached the 10-victory milestone quicker than any other team in ASU history, picking up their 10th win of the season Jan. 3, 2007, and their 21-win total equaled the highest in Boyer s eight seasons. Under Boyer s guidance, several individual records fell during the season as well. Seniors Adrianne Davie and Rudy Sims rewrote the Lady Indian record books, with Davie shattering the career blocked shots record with 132 and the career rebounding record with 1,147. Sims set a new mark in career assists with 548, and became the first ASU player in over a decade to record a triple-double when she scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out 10 assists in a overtime victory at Louisiana-Lafayette. Davie was named All-Sun Belt Conference for the fourth straight season, while Sims earned the honor for the third straight year. During the season, the Lady Indians posted a overall record against a schedule that included nine NCAA Tournament teams and three that participated in the WNIT. The Tribe advanced to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, and Davie earned first-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors for the third straight season. Davie also joined the ASU 1,000- point club, along with Sims and senior Amber Abraham. In the season, ASU put together a programbest 10-game Sun Belt Conference winning streak, part of an 11-game win streak that was the fourth longest in Lady Indian history. The Lady Indians finished the season overall and in second place in the Sun Belt East Division at 11-3, giving Boyer his first 20-win season as head coach. The Tribe advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT, defeating SEC powers Mississippi State and Arkansas along the way. The second round victory over Arkansas was played in front of a Convocation Center record crowd of 10, 892. 8 Boyer joined former Lady Indian coach Jerry Ann Winters as the only two ASU women s basketball coaches to win back to- back coach of the year honors. Davie, Sims and Carter all earned All-Sun Belt honors following the season, marking the first time in Lady Indian history that three players earned all-conference honors in a single season. The season culminated with the program s first-ever regular season conference championship and a return to the WNIT. The Lady Indians finished overall and 10-4 in league play, earning a share of the Sun Belt East division title as they posted one of the top turnarounds in Division I, picking up seven more wins than the previous season. ASU s 19 victories that season were the most since the season, sparked in part by the best start in ASU women s basketball history a seven-game win streak to open the season. The strong start carried over into Sun Belt play as the Lady Indians held the top spot in the East division from start to finish. Davie earned honorable mention all-conference honors as a true freshman, and Boyer was rewarded with his first conference Coach of the Year Award. The season capped a pair of rebuilding years and resulted in a strong finish and a trip to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. In his first season as head coach of the Lady Indians, Boyer led ASU to its first-ever Top 25 national ranking, 18 victories and a trip to the WNIT. The Tribe s 18 victories gave Boyer the most wins by a first-year coach at ASU since Sara Wooley won 19 games in her first season in The Lady Indians opened the season by winning 10 of their first 11 games, including road wins over Southern Miss and nationally-ranked Kansas, giving ASU a No. 25 ranking in the Associated Press poll the following week. The Tribe finished the season at overall, ending the year with the program s second straight invitation to the WNIT. Boyer came to ASU in 1995 spending four seasons as an assistant for former head coach Jeff Mittie, who is now the head coach at TCU. A graduate of Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Mo. with a bachelor's degree in education, Boyer was an assistant coach for the men's program for six seasons, including the last three, which he spent as an assistant with the women's program as well. As an assistant to the men's team, Missouri Western was an NCAA Division II Tournament participant five years (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1995) and won two conference championships. The team made the Sweet 16 in As a women's assistant, Boyer and Missouri Western made two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in 1995 and the Elite Eight the previous season. The team went 31-3 in 1995 and made it to the Final Eight of the national tournament. It also went undefeated through its MIAA schedule at In 1994, the team finished third in the nation, losing in a national semifinal contest and finishing with a 29-3 overall mark. In his four seasons at Arkansas State as an assistant coach, Boyer and the Lady Indians earned a mark. The team went with a trip to the Women's NIT. In the process, ASU earned wins over nationally- ranked Virginia and Kansas. The Lady Indians won 20 games in back-to-back seasons in the and seasons. The 1997 team opened the season with a victory over nationally-ranked Illinois and had a 12-game winning streak during the season, the second longest in school history. The 1998 squad knocked off nationally-ranked Western Kentucky at the Convocation Center and came within four points of scoring an upset over national power Louisiana Tech at home as well. In his first season at ASU, the Lady Indians won 17 games, despite having just seven scholarship players.
