3 introduction to the eit an initiative of the european union The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is an independent community body set up by the european union to address europe's innovation gap. by investing in the eit, europe invests in the talent of tomorrow, who will not only create new start-ups, but will also contribute to innovation in existing companies, thus becomes a source for growth. the institution s headquarter is located in budapest. its budget reached up to eur 300 million for the period , and is expected to reach up to eur 2,7 billion in knowledge and innovation communities (kics) put the innovation web into practice, through them eit gathers the best universities, research centres and most important companies to work together. building upon existing european excellence centres, eit proposes a new approach to innovation in europe, boosting the process from idea to product, from lab to market and from student to entrepreneur. EIT Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) carry out a whole range of activities, covering the entire innovation chain including training and education programmes, reinforcing the journey from research to the market, innovation projects and business incubators. kics have been conceived as capable to react effectively and flexibly to new challenges and changing environments. each kic has been set up as a legal entity, and provided with a great degree of autonomy to define its internal organisation and working methods. they integrate education and entrepreneurship with research and innovation, and operate according to business logic and a result-oriented approach. Node Satellite Associate Partner STOCKHOLM HELSINKI co-location centres around europe each of the eit kics operates across a limited number of hubs called co-location centres. eit ict labs builds upon nodes (berlin, eindhoven, helsinki, london, Paris, stockholm and trento), associate Partners (budapest, Madrid) and satellites each having a unique profile, where activities are based on selected innovation areas, called action lines. in every node there is a physical co-location centre, where students, researchers and business partners come together to share and create ideas, to combine their competences and skills developed in different areas of specialisation. the co-location centre is the place for you to network both in person and through video technology, but also for other extra curriculum activities and events. it is the place that provides opportunities for future career contacts as well. LONDON BRUSSELS (HQ) RENNES MADRID EINDHOVEN PARIS MUNICH MILAN SOPHIA ANTIPOLIS TRENTO BERLIN BUDAPEST EIT ICT Labs applies a catalyst-carrier model in its investment model geared towards innovation the value-adding actions (the catalysts) are applied on complementary activities and business programs. each catalyst is aimed to produce a specific innovation (a service or a product) as its output on top of the carriers, which are typically research, educational or business programs. therefore, eit funding (necessarily the catalyst) is available in a ratio of 1:3 (eit funding 25%, non-eit funding 75%) - the non-eit funding (carrier) may come from different sources, e.g. kic partners' own resource, other eu funding, national/regional funding and private funding (e.g. donations). 2

6 eit ict labs budapest associate Partner GrouP (bapg) The EIT ICT Labs Budapest Associate Partner Group is the only EIT ICT Labs (Associate) Partner located in the Central and Eastern European region. the budapest associate Partner Group's mission is to give a boost to the development of an innovative ict ecosystem in hungary and in central and eastern europe. the eit ict labs budapest associate Partner Group is a consortium of two local universities, namely, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) and Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) and their leading industrial partners in informatics and telecommunications (consortial partners: Ericsson Hungary, Magyar Telekom; cooperating partners: Nokia Networks). the associate Partner Group is supported by the cooperation of MTA-SZTAKI (institute for computer science and control of the hungarian academy of sciences) and ELTE-Soft Nonprofit Ltd. the consortium is led by elte. a unique feature of the eit ict labs budapest associate Partner Group is that it builds on the innovative potential of the dynamically developing hungarian smes and start-ups. to help them maximize their potential, it has created a platform of Hungarian SMEs, and reinforced its innovation management and business accelerator activities. two partner universities have a two-decade best practice of applying the knowledge triangle model (research projects initiated by the industrial partners of the universities). in 2012, the hungarian state, more particularly, the national development agency and the research and technology innovation Fund, issued a call for promoting hungary s participation in the eit kics. in this call for proposals, the eit ict labs budapest associate Partner Group received HUF 1 billion funding from the State. the funding has been used to set up the local co-location centre and served as a carrier for the research projects complementing the eit funded catalyst projects. the clc of the eit ict labs budapest associate Partner Group is located in infopark, among some of the biggest telecommunication and ict companies in budapest and the two participating universities: Faculty of informatics (elte) and Faculty of engineering (bme). 4

7 eit ict labs Magyar nemzeti társult csomópont Az EIT ICT Labs Magyar Nemzeti Társult Csomópont az egyetlen EIT ICT Labs (társult) partner a közép-kelet európai régióban. a budapesti szervezet célja, hogy felgyorsítsa a magyarországi és közép-kelet európai innovatív infokommunikációs környezet fejlesztését. az eit ict labs Magyar nemzeti társult csomópont két helyi egyetem, név szerint az Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem (ELTE) és a Budapesti Műszaki és Gazdaságtudományi Egyetem (BME), valamint vezető informatikai és telekommunikációs ipari partnereik együttműködése (konzorciumi partnerei az Ericsson Hungary, a Magyar Telekom; együttműködő partnere pedig a Nokia Networks). a csomópontot az MTA-SZTAKI és az ELTE-Soft Nonprofit Kft. is támogatja. a konzorcium vezetője az elte. az eit ict labs Magyar nemzeti társult csomópont egyedülállósága, hogy épít a dinamikusan fejlődő magyar kis- és középvállalatok, valamint start-upok innovációs potenciáljára. Mindezek maximális sikere érdekében étrehozott egy magyar kis- és középvállalati platformot, illetve felerősítette innovációmenedzs ment és üzleti akcelerátor tevékenységeit is. a két partneregyetem már két évtizedes, jó gyakorlattal rendelkezik a tudásháromszög modell alkalmazásában (példa erre, hogy a diákok már az egyetemeken ipari partnerek által kezdeményezett hosszútávú kutatási projektekben vesznek részt) ben a magyar állam pontosabban, az akkori nemzeti Fejlesztési ügynökség és a kutatási és technológiai Fejlesztési alap pályázatot írt ki Magyarország eit kic-ekben való részvételére. ennek a pályázatnak a keretében az eit ict labs Magyar nemzeti társult csomópont 1 milliárd forint támogatásban részesült az államtól. a támogatásból valósult meg a helyi clc, illetve biztosította számos, az eit által támogatott katalizátor kutatási projekt kiegészítéseként azok alap-, azaz carrier finanszírozását. az eit ict labs Magyar nemzeti társult csomópont clc épülete az infoparkban helyezkedik el, budapest néhány nagy telekommunikációs és ikt cégének és a két résztvevő egyetem (az elte informatikai kara és a bme Villamos Mérnöki kara) épületeinek szomszédságában. 5

8 budapest co-location centre clc EIT ICT Labs Budapest Associate Partner Group Co-Location Centre 10/a bogdánfy u. h-1117 budapest, hungary Phone: GPs: n 47 28'28" e 19 3'27" Meeting place our co-location centre is situated close to the heart of the city, in infopark, which has a lively atmosphere, and where the universities are co-located with their industrial partners - thus students have the opportunity to meet entrepreneurs, researchers and business partners, alike. the budapest clc has a great significance as a regional hotspot and community space. our institute in a separate building hosts active meetings, workshops, educational courses, and provides flexible workspots for the benefit of our international students and partners. We aim to attract talents and investments to create new businesses, jobs and societal impacts, as well as to provide this meeting place and our european network support for local start-ups. We have a central open space comfortable up to 50 people, and we are equipped with rooms for smaller meetings of circa 20 participants. We can also provide smaller offices upon request. Activities elte and bme, as the two strongest hungarian universities in ict, give a significant cohort of students to the EIT ICT Labs Master School three technical Programs are available in budapest since after stockholm and berlin, the Master school s third international kick-off opening ceremony was held in budapest in our Budapest Doctoral Training Centre has also been active since 2012 providing a unique opportunity for excellent young Phd students in communication software and system performance - a doctoral education that provides full integration of both technical and business aspects of ict. a robust r&d carrier program with nearly 20 ICT research projects were running between January 2013 and June 2014 with a total budget of huf 1 billion, corresponding to the thematic innovation areas of eit ict labs. the funding supported the set-up of the local co-location centre. eit ict labs budapest associate Partner Group has been playing a very active role in the outreach Program, mainly in Central and Eastern Europe. in the framework of the programme, eit ict labs develops partnerships with those member states (called "X-europe" countries) of the european union 6

9 that are not directly connected to the eit ict labs, or in general to the eit network. the programme aims to establish connections with universities, research institutions and companies of these countries, to activate start-ups and to help local researchers, professors and students to become partners of international eit ict labs projects. our contest organized together with MMcluster for central-eastern european start-ups, called brasstacks, raised numerous applications from five countries, and several start-ups participated in the three-day training program in december 2013 and in november Further start-up accelerating events, like hackatons, are organized frequently in outreach countries of eit ict labs, i.e. romania, slovakia, slovenia. Programjaink a budapesti Magyar nemzeti társult csomópont a többi eit ict labs-hez hasonlóan, aktívan ötvözi a kutatás-fejlesztés-innováció (r&d&i) hármasát a felsőoktatással valamint az iparral együttműködve. az elte és a bme, mint Magyarország két legerősebb informatikai képzését kínáló egyeteme, jelentős számú hallgatót biztosít az EIT ICT Labs mesterképzése számára: 2012-től már 3 szakirány érhető el budapesten. stockholm és berlin után a mesterképzés harmadik évnyitó rendezvényét (kick-off ) is itt, budapesten rendezték meg 2014-ben. a Budapesti Doktori Képzési Központ szintén 2012 óta működik, különleges lehetőséget nyújtva a kiemelkedő képességű Phd hallgatók számára kommunikációs 8

11 szoftver és rendszerműködés szakterületeken. a doktori képzés az ict szakmai és üzleti aspektusának összhangját nyújtja a hallgatók számára január és június között mintegy 20 ICT kutatási projekt bevonásával egy intenzív r&d carrier program valósult meg, melynek teljes költségvetése elérte az 1 milliárd forintot, és amely az eit ict labs innovációs tematikájához illeszkedve jött létre. az eit ict labs Magyar nemzeti társult csomópontja az eltevel, bmevel és a cisco systems kft.-vel együtt közösen nyerte el a kutatási és technológiai Fejlesztési alapon keresztül a magyar állam támogatását, hogy a fent említett projekteket vezesse és létrehozzon egy helyi clc-t. az eit ict labs Magyar nemzeti társult csomópont meghatározó szerepet játszik az ict labs outreach Programjában is főként Középés Kelet-Európában. ennek keretében kapcsolatot épít ki olyan uniós országokkal, amelyek nem állnak közvetlen viszonyban az eit ict labs, vagy általánosan az eit hálózattal (X-europe országok). az outreach Program célja, hogy a célországokban segítse a helyi startupokat, európai dimenziójú tanulási lehetőségeket biztosítson hallgatóknak és megerősítse a helyi akadémiai és kutató szektort. a népszerűsítő és toborzó programok segítségével felveszi a kapcsolatot helyi egyetemekkel, kutatóintézetekkel, cégekkel, valamint segíteni próbál kutatóknak, oktatóknak és diákoknak egyénileg is, hogy bekapcsolódhassanak nemzetközi eit ict labs projektekbe a Mobilitás és Multimédia klaszterrel közösen szervezett, öt-öt ország start-upjait vendégül látó, 3 napos képzésünk, a brasstacks számos kezdő vállalkozót szólított meg 2013 decemberében és 2014 novemberében. további start-up-okat mozgósító rendezvényeket, például hackathonokat szervezünk az eit ict labs outreach célországaiban, legutóbb például romániában, szlovákiában és szlovéniában. 9

Unique features of the EIT ICT Labs Master School: a two-year program at 2 different universities in 2 different european countries; 21 top universities of 9 countries to choose from; technical Programmes in the most innovative research fields in ict; high level technical training combined with an innovation & entrepreneurship Minor; research and work experience at leading industrial partners; double degrees from 2 universities and a innovation and entrepreneurship certificate issued by eit; free for eu/eea, swiss citizens, together with a 3000 eur one-time travel and installation support and several scholarship opportunities. eit ict labs Master school is one of the largest joint european ventures in higher education. the institutions involved have developed an agreement to deliver 8 technical Programmes across 21 universities, and the course includes a fully standardised minor in innovation and entrepreneurship. students will also benefit from a mentoring scheme and an internship at one of the industry partners. eit ict labs doctoral school complements the doctoral programs of the partner universities. both programs offer business knowledge and entrepreneurial skills, and involve organizational as well as geographical mobility. students, researchers and academic staff are equipped with skills for creativity and risk-taking capacity. EIT ICT LAbS MASTER SCHOOL A collaboration between the best technical universities in Europe, top European researchers and leading business partners. eit ict labs Master school offers a two-year program, in which students choose two universities in two different european countries to build a curriculum of their choice. on the one hand, it aims to provide students sound technical knowledge; on the other hand, it seeks to equipe them with valuable research and business or entrepreneurial skills. Mobility, a mentoring programme and internship at an eit ict labs industrial partner, as well as summer schools and other extra-curricular activities complement their studies. students are expected to use their creative skills to generate break-through innovations on the global markets. The Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) Minor besides fundamental knowledge on the topics, students learn how to drive innovations to the market. the Master s thesis, which has to be prepared in collaboration with a company, needs to include a business plan too for the commercial exploitation of the researched project. a basic course in innovation and entrepreneurship and the business development labs course are vital parts of this module. Service Design and Engineering (SDE) Goals of the program are: to develop the multidisciplinary technical skills that are needed for designing and building digital, software intensive services based on service-oriented architectures; to develop understanding of and ability to analyse the organizational settings and the user and business requirements, in which the service-based systems are deployed and used; to bridge gap between computer science and software engineering and between information technology and information systems. 2 nd year in budapest, ELTE: Specialization in Distributed Software Systems it supports the design, analysis and development of complex distributed telecommunication services. 2. Security and Privacy (S&P) Goals of the program are: to develop understanding of concepts and technologies for achieving confidentiality, integrity, authenticity, and privacy protection for information processed across networks; to provide competences in communication, knowledge integration, open innovation and technology management, from the viewpoints of both business and technology. 2 nd year in budapest, ELTE: Specialization in Advanced Cryptography it focuses on the general ideas, techniques and methods of applied cryptography as well as on theoretical background and solid knowledge, putting security in a wider context. 2 nd year in Budapest, BME: Specialization in Media Communications Services it focuses on communications and delivery networks, systems, enabling technologies and platforms for providing media services. the Faculty of Informatics at ELTE is one of the most recent and rapidly progressing faculties of eötvös loránd university (elte), with almost 3000 students out of the more than students studying at the 8 faculties of elte. the high standard of education is guaranteed by the highly qualified academic staff of over 100 teachers with great experience at the faculty out of about 1300 at the university. teaching is supported by modern infrastructure and well-equipped computer labs. Joint research and development projects, cooperation with the business community offer up-to-date practical knowledge and experience. completing elte programs students easily find employment at computer science related companies. The Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) dates back to 1782, filling the role of the first institute in europe to train engineers at university level. the university has a prestigious past and presently has approx. 24,000 students located in 8 faculties and an academic staff of about it offers high standard theoretical foundations and practical training based on industrial relationships; regular full time programs in english are offered in b.sc., M.sc. and Ph.d. levels. the Faculty of electrical engineering and informatics offers a digital Media technology Msc course in the eit ict labs Master school, and is member of the eit ict labs doctoral training centre budapest Digital Media Technology (DMT) Goals of the program are: to blend media technologies with man-machine interaction, artificial intelligence techniques and the underlying internet and hardware layers; to develop skills to analyse 3d data in real time (from cameras and other scanning techniques, such as radar, lidar, remote sensing etc.), and to merge them with scientific computation and simulation; to predict possible outcomes in real time, likely on GPus. EIT ICT Labs MASTER SCHOOL EIT ICT LAbS MASTER SCHOOL A legjobb európai műszaki és informatikai egyetemek, vezető kutatók és nemzetközi üzleti partnerek együttműködése az eit ict labs angol nyelvű mesterképzése kétéves programot ajánl, melynek során a diákok két különböző európai ország két egyetemén valósítják meg az általuk választott tanrendet. a mesterképzés egyrészt kiemelkedő szakmai tudás elsajátítását, másrészt értékes innovációs és vállalkozói képességek megszerzését biztosítja számukra. Mobilitás, mentorprogramok, az eit ict labs ipari partnereinél végzett szakmai gyakorlat, valamint nyári egyetemek és egyéb tanterven kívüli programok egészítik ki a képzést. célunk, hogy hallgatóink kreativitásukat használva áttörő fejlesztéseket vigyenek a világpiacra. Az I&E minor a kurzus célja, hogy hallgatóink megtanulják, hogyan vihetik piacra tanulmányaik eredményét, fejlesztéseiket. szakdolgozatukat két egy egyetemi és egy ipari témavezető együttműkődésével írják meg, amelynek során projektjük kereskedelmi forgalomba hozatalához dolgoznak ki konkrét üzleti tervet. a modul egy innovation and entrepreneurship alapkurzusból (innovációs és vállalkozói ismeretek) és egy business development labs course tárgyból (üzletfejlesztés) áll. 12

16 eit ict labs doctoral school on ict innovation Europe faces great societal challenges and need to educate students with both excellent basic knowledge in their fields and capability to transform ideas into products and services, from the labs to the marketplace, from being students to becoming entrepreneurs. the goal of the eit ict labs doctoral school is to develop the ict innovation concept, through which doctoral candidates can aquire an innovational and entreprenuerial (i&e) mindset. after graduation, these doctors will be commercially aware ict leaders, who understand current and future challenges as well as the opportunities that these present to industry. to achieve this goal, the school organizes I&E education that complements the ordinary doctoral studies of each candidate. 16 universities signed the cooperation agreement defining eit ict labs doctoral school on ict innovation, and budapest universities were among the first ones with a significant number of Phd students joining this education. EIT ICT Labs certification those doctoral candidates, who are participating in this programme, will not only receive their doctoral degree from the university, but also a doctoral school on ict innovation certificate from eit ict labs. Doctoral Training Centres (DTC) each dtc is organised by a university or higher educational partner in the eit ict labs doctoral school. these institutes provide a multi-disciplinary and inspiring environment aligning with the thematic innovation areas of eit ict labs. the role of the dtc is also to actively support doctoral students driven entrepreneurial efforts. it ensures that a business partner participates in the mentoring of each doctoral student. dtcs are located in or next to eit ict labs co-location centres (clcs), and work in close cooperation with the clcs to exploit the local innovation network. currently they are set up in budapest, helsinki, Paris, rennes and trento. Business Development Activities of the Budapest Associate Partner Group the budapest associate Partner Group follows the overall aim of eit ict labs by applying a business approach during the course of research and development activities, and providing an education with entrepreneur attitude to help driving european ict innovation leadership and increasing its competitiveness. a platform of innovative smes was formed that integrates dynamically developing hungarian ict companies in a network encouraging new partnerships, knowledge transfer and joint r&d activities. When I was living in Mexico, I worked mainly as an employee at multinational companies. During that time, I always had the feeling that I could do my own company. Anyway, I was certainly lacking knowledge both technical and entrepreneurial. At EIT ICT Labs Master School, I found a great mix of computer science, engineering and entrepreneurship education at top European universities. Nowadays, I feel confident enough to start my own company within the EIT ICT Labs community; a network of universities, research institutes, business partners and investors. Budapest is a great city, full of life! It provides the opportunity to travel around Central and Eastern Europe in a cost effective way. 19 Success stories of cutting edge student ideas: SongArc: a big app hit songarc, ranked as number one in music games and number six in all game apps in the Windows Phone store, reached more than 1.5 million downloads since its launch in october one of the developers is adam kapos, a former bsc student of the Faculty of informatics at eötvös loránd university, presently Master student at the eit ict labs Master school. the app was finalized with the support (a lot of coaching as well as euros for the development work) of the Finnish app accelerator, appcampus of the helsinki eit ict labs. it was not the first app developed by adam, which has achieved great success; the rum run game of his team, called turtle Games, received third prize at the Microsoft imaginecup contest in australia. I always knew that I wanted to be involved in software development. Though every young boy plays with the idea of developing games, I never viewed that as a possibility, as there aren t many places to learn it. But I found a course in Hungary at Eötvös Loránd University, which focused on game development for Windows Phone. Joining the EIT ICT Labs Master School has boosted my career; it is surprising for me that I have achieved such a great success already as a student. Adam Kapos, Hungarian, studies SDE at Aalto, Helsinki and ELTE, Budapest HomeBuddy the first EIT Award the prestigious eit ch.a.n.g.e awards in 2013 went to a hungarian ict labs Master school student, dorottya Maksay for her sustainable social enterprise project. it is a simple idea that aims to bring generations closer together, and creates value for society. it derives from a european problem that older people would like to be socially active, while students need support to find affordable accommodation. homebuddy provides social interaction and care for older people living alone by matching them with students, who need accommodation. students are provided with virtually free housing, and in return they spend 2-3 hours each workday by helping their elderly landlords or landladies. this help can include anything from cleaning and gardening to taking them to cinema, or introducing them computer science basics. a detailed business plan was developed, and presented to funders in hungary and the netherlands. HomeBuddy az első EIT-díjas ötlet Maksay dorottya, az eit ict labs budapesti mesterképzésének és az elte informatikai karának hallgatója, homebuddy elnevezésű üzleti ötletéért (kezdeményezésének fenntartható társadalmi vállalkozássá fejlesztéséért) elsőként vehette át az eit ch.a.n.g.e díját 2013-ban. az eit díjának célja, hogy bemutassa azoknak a leendő fiatal vállalkozóknak az ötleteit, akik az eit oktatási és képzési programjaiból emelkednek ki. a homebuddy lehetőséget teremt az idős emberek társadalmi interakciójára és gondozására azáltal, hogy összekapcsolja őket olyan egyetemi hallgatókkal, akiknek szállásra van szükségük. a hallgatók gyakorlatilag ingyenes lakhatást kapnak, cserébe pedig minden hétköznap 2-3 órát töltenek az idős embereknek történő segítségnyújtással, legyen az takarítás, kertészkedés, moziba kísérés vagy számítógépes ismeretek átadása. az informatikai hálózatba épített projekt más eit hallgatókkal közös csapatmunka keretében jött létre, dorottya már magyar és holland befektetőknek is bemutatta. az eit támogatásának köszönhetően lehetővé válhat, hogy ez a kezdeményezés széles körben elterjedjen. 17

20 r&d&i ProJects in budapest in line with the main goals of eit ict labs, the budapest associate Partner Group aims to foster innovation in the domain of ict research. on top of the r&d&i activities financed by the state and european sources, eit money is spent on bringing the results to the market, thus realizing the innovation cycle. among others, a research & development programme with nearly 20 ict projects had been running in 2013 and 2014 at eötvös loránd university (elte), budapest university of technology and economics (bme) and at the cisco systems ltd. the consortium of the programme had been granted huf 1 billion funding by the state (via the research and technological innovation Fund) to set up the local co-location centre and to serve as a carrier for these research projects. the themes included smartphone data sharing, digital solutions helping to organise urban mobility in cities, ict solutions for teaching and learning and technologies enabling effective security and privacy methods. over 200 researchers and 60 students participated in the programme coordinated by eit ict labs in budapest. research Geared towards the development of new products, solutions and applications for the market. The security of critical systems the Faculty of informatics at eötvös loránd university also conducts joint research projects with its industrial partners, who offer internships for students. Main research areas are: calculus, numerical mathematics, computer algebra systems, number theory, programming theory, artificial intelligence, programming languages, abstract algorithms and their applications, database technologies, functional programming, information systems, remote sensing and geolocation, human-computer interaction and augmented reality, robotics, computer architectures, formal methods, software technologies, etc. our ict research projects are also in line with the eu s new Programme for research and innovation, called h2020 ( ). horizon 2020 is the financial instrument implementing the innovation union, a europe 2020 flagship initiative aimed at securing europe's global competitiveness. 18
