INTRODUCTION The research of the usage of vegetable oil and its derivatives as transportation fuels began in the year of 1970 after the first oil crisis. In the beginning the primary aim was the reduction of fossil fuel production but a few years later the biggest problem was the global environment protection. The overproduction in the agriculture has a boosting effect on the production of biofuels or their usage as a blend mix compound of transportation fuels. This production demand is already a political pressure on the members of the European Union. The possible application of vegetable oils and their derivatives for energetic and other uses should be worked out also in Hungary, a member of the EU, and the solution must satisfy both economical and environmental requirements. The object of my research work was to develop a new method for the laboratorial production of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) with improved quality for motor fuel purpose. I have contributed to the development of a new analytical method for detecting biofuels in different diesel fuels. 2
NEW SCIENTIFIC RESULTS 1. ENZYMATIC TRANSESTERIFICATION OF FATTY ACID METHYL ESTERS (FAME) Fatty acid methyl ester does not affect the reaction but the glycerol has a strong inhibiting effect. In the presence of 9% glycerol in a solvent free reaction mixture, the methyl ester yield decreased by 50%, therefore, it is beneficial to remove the glycerol continuously. [2,4,16] The toxic effect of methanol on the lipase enzyme could be reduced to a minimum with continuous methanol feed. [2,4,16] The higher the unsaturated (mainly polyunsaturated) content of FAME the smaller the cold filter plugging point (CFPP) of it. A minimal increase of polyunsaturated fatty acid methyl ester content makes the oxidation stability of FAME considerably worse. Thus the oleic acid methyl ester could be a good solution because its CFPP value and oxidation stability is good and its cetane number is also high (ca. 55). The ideal FAME would be produced from vegetable oil which contains only oleic acid. [4,24,25,27,29,34] The considerably different fatty acid composition does not influence the effectiveness of the enzymatic transesterification. [4,24,25,27,29,34] The process parameters of the new, environment-friendly enzymatic transesterification, that is wasteless compared to other technologies, are the following: 50 C, 1:4 vegetable oil:methanol molar ratio, 12% enzyme catalyst and methanol addition in 8 steps; the yield of fatty 3
acid methyl esters was higher that 99% exceeding the FAME conversions published before. [2,4,16] 2. CORRELATION BETWEEN COLD FILTER PLUGGING POINT AND FATTY ACID COMPOSITION OF FAME There is a y= -1.8734x+13.089 linear correlation between the cold filter plugging point values (y) and the ratio of total unsaturated fatty acid / saturated fatty acid (x). The deviation of the correlation is ±1.0 C, which corresponds to the acceptable error rate of CFPP measurement. [6,32]] 3. ADDITIVE SENSITIVITY OF FAME Employing flow improver and paraffin dispersant additives together (approximately 200 ppm concentration) in FAME resulted in a much better effect (~10 C) on cold filter plugging point than flow improver additive alone would have achieved, therefore the total amount of additives is lower, which proves to be cost effective. [21] 4. DETECTABILITY OF FAME IN DIESEL FUELS With the method of IR spectrophotometric measurement without separation we were able to decrease the lower detectability limit of RME in diesel fuel to 0.1±0.01% with isooctane dilution, instead of cyclohexane dilution. Isooctane reduced the matrix effect more than 4
cyclohexane, the use of which is suggested by the valid standard. [8,9,20,22] THE ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES OF THE NEW RESULTS A little increase in FAME conversion results in a considerably higher. For example 2-3% high FAME conversion causes 5-7% profit increase. The qualitative and quantitative detectability of FAME in diesel fuels is a very important economic issue. Recently, the tax is 85 Ft/liter, which can be reclaimed in case of biofuels taking into consideration the amount of bio-compound (maximum 5V/V%). 5
