Borecka, March 2014 Scope and Content of Collection This collection contains the papers of György Bakách Bessenyey (1892 1959), Hungarian envoy to Switzerland who resigned upon the German occupation of Hungary on March 19, 1944, and who played an instrumental role drawing the attention of the West to the deportation of Hungary's Jews. His correspondence, reports, speeches, articles constitute the collection. Historical Note: György Bakách Bessenyey (1892 1959), was a secretary of the embassy in Vienna (1931 1934), a counselor of embassy (1938) in Belgrade, and the ambassador in Bern (1943 1944). Following the 2
German occupation of Hungary he resigned (22 March, 1944), and joined the anti German Hungarian diplomats group. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Hungarian National Committee, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Commission had (since 1949). After the WWII lived in U.S., worked with the relief committee groups and supported students and refugees (1944 1945). A member of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
