1. Aims of the Research The present paper aims to emphasise a rarely analysed, however frequently mentioned and applied Nietzschean expression: the Ideal. The secondary literature mostly concentrates on two applications of the concept: the unique Greek culture as ideal, and the so-called ascetic ideal. This partial position, however seems disproportionate with respect to its importance, since the expression of ideal plays a more central role in Nietzsche s language, and accordingly in his philosophy. The Nietzsche-literature is exceedingly rich and diverse, including the Hungarian Nietzsche-reception, the concept of the ideal has been treated as a subquestion of certain classical Nietzschean problems, such as the morality, Aesthetics or Metaphysics. The Nietzschean concept of the ideal is an Aesthetic one with respect to its ancestry: its main characteristics were defined by Winckelmann, Goethe, and Schiller on the one hand, and by the classical-philology on the other. However the term s applicability cannot be restricted between a however widely defined frames of the term Aesthetics. As Ruben Berrios and Aaron Ridley write in a newly published handbook, Nietzsche took art more seriously, perhaps, than any other philosopher of comparable stature. Does it follow, that Nietzsche has a theory (or something like a theory) of Aesthetics? The question is not an easy one. Some scholars, and Alexander Nehamas is one of the lauder ones, give priority for the aesthetic interpretation of the Nietzschean texts. Others, eminently Michel Haar, hold that such an aesthetic interpretation is a total misunderstanding. We would like to ask the question does have Nietzsche a theory of Aesthetic and this paper looks for the answer trough the analysis of the application of the expression of ideal. However, during this analysis it has utmost importance to define the so call method of the research.
2. Methods of the Research The present paper concentrates on the Nietzschean concept of the ideal : its forms, functions, and contexts, with respect to its relation to the field of Aesthetics. The Introduction has a threefold function. First, it presents an overview of the different uses of the concept of Aesthetics, and their applicability to Nietzsche s various texts. It emphasises that the secondary literature is overly divided with respect to the question of the possibility or necessity of aesthetic readings of Nietzsche. Behind this dilemma, the paper detects a questionable method that uses its own definition of aesthetics, excluding the possibility that the Nietzschean text would apply its own conception of the subject. To avoid this dilemma, the Introduction offers an analytic strategy of reading which attempts to remain open to the possibility of a radical shift in the meaning of Aesthetics. The second and central part of the Introduction applies Eugen Fink s categories of the operative and thematic concepts. Fink characterizes these categories as clearly distinct with respect to a certain systematic philosophy. An operative concept is a theoretical concept that is not essentially characterized by its objective or thematic definition, but by the intellectual operation that it allows for. However the Nietzschean philosophy is certainly not a systematic one. The paper proposes to read Nietzsche in a way that assumes that operative and thematic could be understood as opposing poles of a conceptual continuum, in which the turn-over of the perspectival viewpoints (KSA 12: 91., 494.) plays an important role. Closing this central part, the Introduction offers a short overview of Nietzsche s concept of the ideal, which is the main topic of the dissertation. The third part of the Introduction sets up a distinction between methodical interpretations and analytic reading strategies, by having recourse to the works of Michel Foucault and Reinhart Koselleck. The paper adopts this latter approach. It emphasises that in the context of a method, a transformation is defined by having recourse to a rule of transformation. As a consequence, this method presupposes and applies to a prior definition of Aesthetics in the process of detecting a later transformation of the concept. The analytic reading strategy, as opposed to this, concentrates on the transformation itself: a transformation which we do not need to define as only structural. In this respect the analytic-strategic
reading is more applicable to the Nietzschean text than a methodologically defined interpretational process.
3. Main Conclusions The first chapter of the paper concentrates on the texts of Nietzsche s Basle period. It starts by analysing the relationship between the concepts of the ideal and of the character/person. It emphasises the double origin of the Nietzschean ideal : on the one hand, it originates in the aesthetical perspectives of Wincklemann, Goethe and Schiller, while, on the other hand, it is a descendant of the Wissenschaft of philology, in which Ancient Greeks represent the only true ideal. The chapter attempts to establish Nietzsche in the context of the models of aesthetic theory and practice introduced by David E. Wellbery (performance theory, representational theory, expression theory), and defines the typological differences between Winckelmann s and Nietzsche s concept, by relying on the analyses of Sándor Radnóti. With respect to the relationship between the concept of genealogy and the ideal, the first chapter emphasises that the aesthetic problem of the ideal plays a central (though rarely discussed) role in the Nietzschean approach of genealogy as well. The second chapter of the paper concentrates on the problem of symptomatology, based on the writings that belong to the mature period of Nietzsche. The main problem this chapter focuses on is the embodied ideal. The chapter defines the relevance of symptomatology with respect to Nietzsche s philosophy, arguing that in discussions of corporeality, Nietzsche does not refer to a body in general, but to a body of a certain character, person or ideal. The discourse of symptomatology refers to the internal structure of a certain ideal or individual. The process of interpretation reflects on the internal structure of the individual or ideal, but at the same time it is the same process with which an individual appropriates a certain internal hierarchy or structure. The third and final chapter of the paper concentrates on the problem of how, and under what circumstances can an ideal appear in history, according to Nietzsche, concentrating on the second half of the Basel period, and especially on the texts of the Untimely Meditations. This chapter also analyses the relationship between Nietzschean and contemporary conceptions of aesthetics.
