5 CYO News St. Angela Merici Pro-Life ministry We are excited to announce our inaugural CYO Rose Rally For Life to be held here at St. Angela on Friday, July 26, 2019 beginning at 9:00 p.m. and running through to 6:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. This event is similar to the Relay for Life events held here in past years, benefiting Hope Lodge run by the American Cancer Society. While that was certainly a worthy cause, we felt a need to be more proactive with prolife organizations here in our Archdiocese. Proceeds from this event will benefit The Woman s New Life Center, Access Pregnancy Centers and Rachel s Vineyard. Both The Woman s New Life Center and Access Pregnancy Centers provide free medical care and counseling services to women in need. Rachel s Vineyard provides healing to those who have been hurt by abortion. At this time we have 10 CYO s signed up to participate in this event! The event itself is only open to CYO members and adults. You may be wondering how you can help make this event successful. First, we ask for your prayers as we work to organize and prepare for the first CYO Rose Rally FOR Life. Pray for good weather and safe travel for all those attending. Secondly, we ask for your generous financial support of this endeavor. Included in this week s bulletin is a CYO Rose Rally FOR Life donation form. If you would like to donate please complete the form and drop it off at the parish office by July 24 th. Lk 10:1920 Quarterly Mass for Persons with Disabilities The Commission for Persons With Disabilies would like to announce it s next quarterly Mass. It will be held on Sunday, July 14, 2019, at the 11:00 AM Mass at St. Genevieve Church, Hwy. 433, Slidell, LA. The commission hosts this Mass at a parish in various parts of the archdiocese each quarter as a way to highlight the inclusion of persons with disabilies in the liturgy. Everyone is invited to aend. We raised the necessary funding for the room and the renovation of the room is currently underway. Our goal is to have the room completed by the opening of the school year, and we are currently on schedule. Thank you! Events like this help me to remember the love and dedication of our parish. I have seen our congregation over and over again step up to the plate in order to accomplish our mission of leading the people in our area into a closer relationship with God. This Catechesis room is going to form young minds and hearts, so that their early Catholic formation with be strong. Our parish school was established in 1965 in a unique architectural setting on top of a Church. We are the only parish in this area with this setup. While this is clearly unique, it constantly reminds me that the foundation of all of our teaching is our Catholic faith. As the Church is the school s architectural foundation, the Church is the school s educational foundation. The architectural foundation is deep in order to support both floors. But our faith needs to be even deeper than that. The Catechesis room is forming faith filled Catholics with a firm foundation. Since we are on the subject of renovations you may have noticed we completed the renovation of the second bathroom in the Church. The baby changing tables, are on order so hang in there, moms! I also want to thank you for supporting the Rose Rally for Life. Our CYO is gearing up for a special night where they will stand up for the great dignity of human life. Your support means more than you know. All proceeds will help ProLife efforts in our area, assisting with ultrasounds, pregnancy tests and counseling for women is crisis pregnancy situations. 21 St. Joseph s Altar Beginner Symbolic Pastry Class In preparation for next year s St. Joseph s Altar, a Beginner Symbolic Pastry Class is being offered Saturday, August 17, The class is being taught by Reneé Lauland and Janet Cruppi, cochairs of the St. Angela Merici St. Joseph Altar Ministry. Two designs will be offered a heart or a cross. These designs will allow participants to learn how to make the dough, proper support of the pastry, use of fig filling, and a variety of decorative techniques. The dough used in class will be a salt dough. (You will receive the recipe for edible dough as well). The Dr. Seuss themed event, Oh the Places You ll Go, included participants from nine CYOs from the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The 150+ teens sold roses, treats and even naps to benefit prolife organizations in our community, so they may provide care for expectant mothers. Altogether, the teens raised $16,819! 41 SAINT ANGELA MERICI ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH Archdiocese of New Orleans August 11, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners, This week, we mark the beginning of the school year. We are entering into our 54 th year of dedicated service to the Metairie area and beyond. We are once again blessed with growth in our enrollment. Over the last 4 years, our numbers have continued to climb. Our dedicated administration and faculty have put their hearts and souls into leading our students to know God and serve him with a well-formed mind, heart and soul. One of my favorite times in the school day is the early morning. After opening doors for car line, I attend the morning meeting. We begin the morning with the Morning Offering, led by a group of students. They also lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. After the prayer and pledge, our principal, Mrs. Paige Bennett, shares a thought for the day with our students something to help them know that they are loved by God and that they have daily opportunities to share His love with others beginning with the fellow student right next to them. We recognize student birthdays, student achievement and often our counselor, Mrs. Lindsey Toups, shares a lesson on building Christian character. At the end of the morning meeting, I have the privilege of picking four students for the school chant. (I have no problem finding volunteers!) The students lead us in a chant that encapsulates our mission of forming students for the world that we live in. They chant: FAITH, SPIRIT, BODY, MIND BE LIKE JESUS, ALL THE TIME. With each part of the chant, there are hand motions: with FAITH they make a Cross with both index fingers; with SPIRIT they flex their biceps; with BODY they cross their arms over their hearts; and with MIND they point to their growing minds with both index fingers. Finally, when they say BE LIKE JESUS, ALL THE TIME they will clap out the words. Our students repeat the chant 3 times as a student body, getting louder at each repetition. It fires up their day and helps them remember why they are here at St. Angela. We have a long tradition at St. Angela Merici of forming our young people to love God and share His hope with a world that needs it. I want to thank you for your commitment to our school and Catholic education in our parish. You are a part of this tradition. In particular, I want to thank you for your support of our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program and the building of our Atrium. Your generous donations will certainly have a great impact on the faith of our next generation. We will soon be offering an Open House of the Atrium so that you can see it all in detail. 57 SAINT ANGELA MERICI ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH TÜv{w Évxáx Éy axã büäxtçá August 25, st Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners, In June of 1987, I attended my first pilgrimage to Medjugorje. I had just turned 18 years old, standing between high school and college. At that point in my life, I was not engaged in my faith and was just about to walk away from it altogether. My grandmother decided to send my family to Medjugorje, having heard that so many people were coming back changed on fire for the God and the Church in a new and energetic way. I took her up on the invitation and went there with an open mind. All I can say is that God moved in my life on pilgrimage. I returned to New Orleans realizing that I had a long way to grow, but I had a fire in my heart that was drawing me closer and closer to God and His Church. I realize now that a pilgrimage is a setting for God to transform hearts. I remember reading Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales in middle school, a story about a pilgrimage. My teacher taught us that a pilgrimage is not only about the destination, it is also about the journey there and back, and the people that walk the walk with you. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to attend several pilgrimages, the last one going to the Holy Land in the Summer of In the early part of this year, I felt that God was nudging me to lead another pilgrimage. After praying about several options I discerned that the next pilgrimage would follow the footsteps of St. Paul in Greece and Turkey. This pilgrimage will walk through St. Paul s journey to establish the early Christian communities. We hear the areas mentioned in the readings, but this pilgrimage will make the readings a touchable reality. We will start in Istanbul (Constantinople), then move south to see the Seven Cities of the Book of Revelation, then take a cruise across the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, stopping at Patmos, Rhodes, Crete and Santorini. We will then tour Athens, Corinth and Delphi. The pilgrimage will leave New Orleans on June 12 and return on June 25 th, You are invited to an information night this Sunday, August 25 th at 7pm. We will meet in the Church. A Message from Father Beau... I also want to invite you to attend the Fall session of the Alpha Course, beginning on Wednesday, September 4 th. This will be the 4 th time that we have offered the course, and at this point 273 people have gone through Alpha at St. Angela Merici. Currently 71 people are registered for September. What happens at Alpha? We open the Kern Center doors on Wednesday night at 6:30pm. A great dinner ( a free dinner!) is served next with coffee and dessert. This is followed by a 30 minute video presentation on our big screen. The videos are ask the deeper questions of life that we all carry but may not have answered; questions of life and faith. We then move into a table group discussion facilitated by a table leader and helper where you can ask any question that is on your mind. We end promptly at 8:30pm. This invitation may spark something when you hear it. If so, I invite you to check it out. So often the best things in life are right behind a door we have never thought to open.
