The north-eastern part of the Great Hungarian Plain is one of the most naturallike part of Hungary, still abundant in natural values. Marshes, bogs, hardwood groves, sandy lowland plains and saline habitats constitute quite variable conditions for ground-beetles among which both mountain and boreal elements are present in great numbers. My investigations in the region were launched at the Bereg Plain. This region had not been in the focus of investigations earlier, more detailed studies of ground-beetles were initiated by Krisztina Szalai. Her results greatly inspired me during my work, sincein addition to the highly protected she described the presence of species characteristic of the hilly and mountain regions, which the experts had not been aware of earlier regarding the Great Hungarian Plain. In the dissertation I am discussing the ground-beetle fauna of the north-eastern part of the Great Hungarian Plain, and its zoogeographical relations. In 1995 my objective was to survey the ground-beetle fauna of three lowland forests. I also wanted to contribute to the survey of the spread of in Hungary. In 1996 my investigation was also extended to parts of the Bereg Plain, outside the borders of Hungary. The objective was to survey and compare the ground-beetle fauna of certain forests with that of forests subject to the investigation on the Hungarian side. The investigation also aimed at surveying the presence of groundbeetle species typical of mountains in the ground-beetle fauna of forests, which would have supported the specific biogeographical status of the Bereg Plain. In addition, my goal was to reveal the location ofhabitats on the part of the Bereg Plain situated outside Hungary. My studies concerning the part of the Bereg Plain outside the borders of Hungary were conducted back in In order to reveal more detailed biogeographical relations specific of the region the investigations were extended to the volcanic islandlike hills of the Bereg Plain and to the Carpathians as well. Data from the Carpathians had to be acquired so that direct evidence could be found for the biogeographical connection between the ground-beetle fauna of the Bereg Plain and that of the mountain region. In the course of the investigations three fundamental questions were raised: (1) are there any other forests where species typical of the mountains can be detected; (2) can these forests be considered as refugiums for mountain species?; (3) is it possible that forests of the Bereg Plain operate as a fluctuation zone for mountain species? The scope of my investigation was extended to cover additional forest areas in the years 1998 to My objective was to reveal the characteristics of ground-beetle fauna of plain forests located between the island-like hills close to the country border and the Carpathians. During this study my intention was to provide new data supporting the previous findings, i.e. as for the biogeographical aspect, the Bereg Plain 9
is deemed to be a Praecarpathicum, that is a fluctuation zone for the ground-beetle fauna of the Carpathians, and some forest patches of the Bereg Plain constitute refugiums, representing potential centers for the spreading of the populations of ground-beetle species typical of mountains. The investigation of forests of the Bereg Plain located outside Hungary was completed in Nevertheless, owing to my job held at Hortob had the opportunity to participate in several research programs, in the frames of which I conducted studies at various sites of the region. Beyond this, between 1998 and 2006 I collected samples by picking from more than 150 sites in order to get an ever more complete understanding of the ground-beetle fauna of the region. The results of the foregoing investigations were utilized to explain the ground-beetle fauna of the northeastern part of the Great Hungarian Plain, as well as to analyze its zoogeographical relations. My research between 1995 and 2006 can be divided into two major parts. One part of the research work is constituted by a series of studies performed mainly on the territories of the Bereg Plain located outside Hungary, whereas the second part encompasses the period of , when investigations applying pitfall traps and collection of samples by picking in several locations of Hungary. The results of these investigations were utilized when faunistical and zoogeographical conclusions were drawn. Investigations with pitfall traps between 1995 and 1999 were carried out at altogether 22 sampling sites of the Bereg Plain. Investigations with pitfall traps in the period were performed at nearly 100 sites, and collection of samples by picking was performed at 150 sites in the north-eastern part of the Great Hungarian Plain. The pitfall traps contained a mixture of 50% ethylene-glycol and 1 decilitre formalin or detergent as a killing preserving solution. The traps were covered with natural materials, e.g bark pieces and wood-fibre plate. Trapped individuals were collected monthly from May to September. During the study in similarity of the carabid species composition of the Bereg Plain, the Aggtelek Karst and the Zemplby the Jaccard index for presence-absence data, and by the Matusita similarity was used for abundance data. The similarity structure was displayed by non-metric scaling (MDS). During the calculations the NuCoSA package was used. During the study in similarity of the carabid fauna of the Bereg Plain and the Carpathians was calculated by the Matusita similarity. The similarity structure was displayed by hierarchical cluster analysis using the Ward-Orl During the calculation the NuCoSA package was used. 10
I tested some classical rules of island biogeography for the carabid beetles in 15 forest patches between The number of species-area and the number of species-distance to colonization source relationships, and the influence of other factors like shape, isolation and altitude above the see level, on the number of species were studied. Distances of the forest habitat islands from the Carpathians was calculated by taking the shortest possible distance The shape of forests was characterized by the shape index. Isolation of the forest patches was measured by the inverse isolation measure. Linear regression analysis was used to study the relationships between the studied variables (distance to the Carpathians, size of the forest patches, shape index, inverse isolation index, altitude above the sea level) and the total number of carabid species of the habitat island, the number of hilly and mountainous species and the number of widely distributed generalist species. The dissimilarity of the species composition of forest patches was measured by the Hellinger distance. Heterogeneity of the carabid fauna of the forest patches was characterized by the Whittakerdiversity. During the study between from the north-east territory of the Great Hungarian Plain and Carpathians were collected altogether individuals of 330 species. There were collected individuals of 165 species in Ukrainian side. From sampling sites located in Carpathians were trapped individuals of 34 species, while from lowlands areas were collected individuals of 160 species. There were collected altogether individuals belonging to 315 species from Hungarian areas during 12 years. The results of research and collections between 1995 and 2006 are summarized as follows: During my investigations several species typical of mountains were detected in the north-eastern part of the Hungarian lowland which had not been observed in the Great Hungarian Plain earlier. Species belonging to this group include for instance:,,,,, In the course of my investigations several species characteristic of hilly and mountain regions were found in the north-eastern part of the Great Hungarian Plain, the presence of which had been detected only at one or two sites of the Great Hungarian Plain earlier. Such species include, e.g.,,,, 11
,,,,, The observed carabid species unequivocal prove that the fauna of the Bereg Plain is biogeographically quite unique. On the one hand can be experienced Carpathian effects which appear in the occurrence of several montane species, and on the other hand can be detected Dacian influence which appear in the presence of heading from Transylvania to the west The fauna of the Bereg Plain can not be fitted into the fauna of the foreststeppe vegetation of the Great Hungarian Plain because of the high proportion of mountainous, Carpathian species, furthermore because of the dominance of the closed forest inhabiting species. These facts are attributed to the earlier greater extent of the forested area. Moreover, the carabid fauna of the lowland forests and the island-like hills might have originated from the forest belts of the North-Eastern Carpathians I established by cluster analysis that the forests studied in the Bereg Plain between can be classified into four, well separated groups. The first group was composed of the sampling areas of the Carpathians which contain in great number species characteristic of hills and mountains. The second group was composed of the island-like hills of the Bereg Plain which have a unique and different carabid fauna from lowlands and Carpathians. In these island-like hills not only species characteristic of the hills and mountains, but distinctly mountainous species and Dacian species () occurred, as well. Lowland forests that contain in great number species characteristic of hills and mountains formed the third group. The fourth group was composed of lowland forests containing mainly widely distributed and lowland carabid species Few species typical of hilly or mountain regions were observed in almost all lowland forests, which makes us assume that these species used to have a homogeneous spread area in the Bereg Plain, then being more abundant in forests. Species such as or can be considered as relic species since presumably only these species have remained out of species typical of mountain regions in the forests subject to the study I established that majority of species characteristic of hills and mountains occurred in island-like hills and in the lowland forests that contain several species characteristic of hills and only some species (e.g. ) occurred in numerous forests. Whence I conclude that these forests can be considered as refuges, which potential dispersal centers for the populations of the forest-inhabiting carabid species characteristic of hills and mountains. In case of favourable conditions (more humid climate, decreasing habitat destruction caused by humans) these mountainous species will be able to disperse from these refuges and establish populations in the newly forested habitats I proved that the Bereg Plain can be considered as Praecarpathicum, that is the fluctuation zone of the Carpathians from a biogeographical point of view. In the 12
past, when the forests of the Bereg Plain were continuous, and had connections with the forest stands of the Carpathians, carabid species characteristic of hills and mountains, and the mountainous species could be establishment in the forests of the Bereg Plain. However, recently the continuous forests of the Bereg Plain have become fragmented, thus the establishment of the carabid species is not ensured. In the forest patches with suitable environmental conditions (meso- and microclimate, soil structure, food items, area etc.) for the survival of carabid species characteristic of hills and mountains, these species remain in great number, while in the forests where the environmental conditions do not promote their survival they have become extinct or only some species of high tolerance could survive I tested some classical rules of island biogeography for the carabid beetles in forest patches of the Bereg Plain between During the examination I found following results: I tested some classical rules of island biogeography for the carabid beetles in forest patches of the Bereg Plain during During the examination of the species-distance relations I have not found significant correlations between the total number of species, the number of WidGe species and the distance to the Carpathians. However, I have found negative correlation between the ForHim species and the distance to the Carpathians, although it was also no significant. This correlation is consistent with the rules of the dynamic biogeography: the number of species, characteristic to the source decreases as the distance to the source increases. At the beginning of 1900s, when the forest stands were continuous at least partly, the species were able to spread over the region. Nowadays, the forest patches segregated from the Carpathians and each by open areas, therefore, these patches do not serve as stepping stones spreading from the Carpathians for the brachypterous forest specialist species characteristic of the hills and mountains. The distance to the Carpathians had significant influence to the composition of carabid fauna of the forest patches. Nowadays, it has no significant influence, because the forest patches isolated. Negative relationship between the number of ForHim species and the distance to the Carpathians is still observable, although it is not significant statistically During the examination of the species-area relations I have found significant negative relationship between the size of habitat island and the total number of species, which is the opposite of the predation of the classical theory of island biogeography. During the analyses I maked difference between species which recognize the habitat as a patch or island, and those which can survive in the neighbouring habitats as well. For the ForHim species, the forest patches studied are islands, while the WidGe species can survive in the neighbouring habitats. There is a significant positive correlation between the number of species and the size of forest patch for ForHim species, while the correlation is significantly negative for WidGe species. This pattern is related to the edge effect, habitat heterogeneity, asynchronity of subpopulations and isolation. 13
a. My results demonstrated that the number of WidGe species significantly increases, while the number of ForHim species significantly decreases as the area of the forest patches decreases. These facts can be explained by the increase of the edgearea ratio and the decrease of the area of the forest patches b. Significant positive relationship between the area of the forest patch and the number of ForHim species also can be explained by the habitat heterogeneity. A larger forest patch is more likely to have greater habitat heterogeneity permitting the forest specialist species to find their special microhabitat. This fact can explain the significant increase of the number of ForHim species with the increase of the forest patch area c. The significant positive relationship between the area of the forest patch and the number of ForHim species may also explain by the greater number of subpopulation. The subpopulations of a large habitat patch may fluctuate in an asynchronous way. Thus, when the size of a subpopulation decreases, that of an another subpopulation can increases. If a population consists of several subpopulations and those fluctuate differently, then the survival time of the composite population may significant increase. Out of the factors that can determine the number of subpopulations in a composite population, the one of most importance is the area of the habitat. In the present situation the ForHim species in a larger forest patches probably consist of more subpopulations, therefore their survival time is longer d. The significant positive relationship between the inverse isolation index and the number of ForHim species emphasizes that increased isolation of a forest patch significantly decreases the number of ForHim species present there. Thus, the isolation also has a remarkable effect on the carabid fauna of a forest patch. If a ForHim species becomes extinct in a given small forest patch due to one of the above mentioned factors or combination of these factors, then this extinct ForHim species can not recolonize in the forest patch because the forest patch is isolated. ForHim species are large and wingless, so they are poor colonist. Contrary, the good colonist WidGe species may easier colonize in the I have managed to reveal four additional, new locations of the highly protected in the Bereg Plain. One of these locations is the Beregsz-forest on the Hungarian side of the border, whereas the other three sites are situated in the Nagyb-hill, Beregsz-hill and Sal-hill on the Ukrainian side Having summarized the occurrence data of I found that this species was detected in 8 locations of Hungary. Out of these Kaszonyhill and Beregsz-forest represent the two richest habitats of the foregoing species. 14
I found that this species can be considered primarily as one characteristic of hilly and mountain regions because on the territory of the Bereg Plain located outside Hungary it was detected only at island-like hills and was not observed in hornbeam groves and oak forests On the basis of occurrence data relevant to I have managed to draw up the assumed direction of spread, along which the species could get to various locations of the Bereg Plain According to my findings, is present in much more locations of the Ny my investigations revealed this species at 30 additional sites I found that the foregoing species is not potentially endangered in the region considering its presence in both natural and degraded habitats. This allows us to come to the conclusion that is able to endure the complete or partial deterioration of its habitat. This species re-occurs on uncultivated lands in onetwo years. This adaptability and less specific habitat need are advantageous with respect to the survival of the species I found that the extensive spread area is characteristic mainly of groundbeetle species of South-East Europe. This tendency can be observed today as well. At the same time, however, the spread area for species typical of Northern Europe which require cooler and more humid climate conditions is rather shrinking The majority of ground-beetle species spread by slow diffusion, including the step-by-step, gradual colonization of the neighboring territories. However, jump dispersal is characteristic of some species, during which they manage to cover large distances, even through obstacles In the case of certain species (such as ) it was observed that they switch from diffuse spreading to jump spreading, especially when they come across larger obstacles In the case of some species living near water (e.g.) passive spreading by water can also be observed According to my findings the spread of South-East European species on the Great Hungarian Plain follows two mechanisms: One is the so-called mechanism, according to which the species penetrate into the Great Hungarian Plain in a relatively narrow stripe along the River Danube, from where they strive to extend their spread area to the right and left. The other one is the so-called mechanism, where species reaching the southern parts of the Carpathian Basin first tend to occupy 15
a long but relatively narrow stripe laterally and then turn northbound to colonize new territories I found that following the continental steppe era, the forestation of the north-eastern part of the Great Hungarian Plain took place not only from the North- East Carpathians but also from the mountains of Transylvania. Mountain species found in the Szatm-Bereg Plain came from the north-eastern part of the Carpathians, whereas mountain species detected in the eastern and southern parts of the Ny (for instance,, ) must have arrived from the Szil, B Mountains of Transylvania None of the mountain species found in the north-eastern part of the Great Hungarian Plain can fly, therefore, they could arrive to their current habitats only at the time when the whole region was covered with contiguous forests The isolated populations of mountain species in the north-eastern region of the Great Hungarian Plain are of relic nature but cannot be considered as real relictums. The reason for their relic nature lies in the fact that their contiguous spread area had been split which entailed losing all connections with their main spread area According to the studies, some species (e.g. ) were found in great numbers in some forest patches of the lowland. This can be explained by the fact that their competitors which they had to compete with for habitats and nutrition base on their main spread area had been missing originally or with time passing had become extinct in the isolated forests I found that maximum one ground-beetle species can be considered as relic from the ice age since the vast majority of species arrived to the north-eastern part of the Great Hungarian Plain as a result of climate changes taking place in the beech age, when the region from the foot of the mountains to as far as the city of Debrecen. This made it possible for mountain species to settle in the local fauna It has been proven that the occurrence of mountain species in B not a unique, isolated phenomenon, as these species can be observed in other forests and bogs of the north-eastern part of the Great Hungarian Plain as well The ground-beetle fauna of the north-eastern part of the Great Hungarian Plain is not only of Palearctic or European, but also of South-East European origin: it 16
is constituted by Ponthus, Pontho-Caspian, Pontho-Mediterranean and Mediterranean species, too Immigration in the steppe era following the ice age is represented by Ponthus and Pontho-Caspian species characteristic of steppes, which are present in relatively low numbers in the north-eastern part of the Great Hungarian Plain. Such species include, for instance,,,,,,. These species even to date are closely tied to their dry, open grass habitats being of steppe nature, therefore, their spread in the region is restricted by the sandy lowland plains of the Ny More recent immigration is represented predominantly by Pontho- Mediterranean and Mediterranean species, which tend to spread today as well. Basically, these species can be divided into two groups. One group is made up of species residing mainly in wet places covered with dense vegetation, among the remnants of plants and debris as these provide sufficiently warm and humid environment for them. The second group includes species which prefer warm but drier grass or saline habitats. 17
