3 GREETINGS Dear Friends, The MAGIS, the theme of our present issue, means to me the strength of inner motivation and dynamism: good could be done always a little better. This is building on the basic experience of being on the road, while I can sense the desire and joy of approaching the goal. Our focus is to prepare for the 36th General Congregation, for which we will need many reflection and common consideration. This is completed by a multi-year-process, in the frame of it we achieve stronger international integration and cooperation with our neighbors, primarily with those living in the German speaking area. A painful experience was the loss of many older fellow order members in our communities: a big generation, which provides an example to us and which was hardened in the exile, starts his final journey. At the same time, it strengthens us to see the new vocations and those who are taking vows. It is a special pleasure for us that after several years of preparation, two young Vietnamese order members, Tuan and Ngu, arrived to us this summer for a mission. They are learning Hungarian and they start their Regency service in Miskolc: we pray for them, too! We would like to do in our service not more, but primarily to act more extensively, more attentively and more cooperatively with others. In this context Bálint Nagy begins his new service as the new vocation promoter; Zoltán Koronkai as the school pastor in Miskolc, Lajos Kovács as the university pastor in Marosvásárhely, Árpád Horváth as the church director in Pest, Árpád Jancsó and Csaba András as Regents in Miskolc. Gábor Bellovics begins his studies in Germany, András Száz in Budapest. We are grateful for the love, attention, professional or material support with which our friends help our service. I would like to say a special thank you for the donations sent to the 100-year-old A Szív (The Heart) magazine. Thanks to these donations 150 large families of NOE (National Association of Large Families) could get one-year subscriptions. For the appeal of Transcarpathia in Trouble 8.1 million HUF arrived in a very short time. We feel that we have to pay attention to the refugees as well. 4 Spirituality Magis and Inigo as a Regent T he kind word of St. Ignatius became more and more understandable in my life, though it keeps bringing something new, something fresh, which calls me always for something more, for something new, which asks me to leave my strategies practiced so far and to give myself better and better to Him. Therefore this magis which is the Latin word for rather, better, more has interested me since I was a Jesuit novice. After I finished my Philosophy studies in Rome and came back, I brought it (the magis) with me. I made friends with it and I felt that it is for me because the magis is on human scale. It does not want to interrupt or eviscerate, but it follows the principle of gradualism, and it offers this principle. The magis promises growth in goodness day to day. I was full of hope when I came to the Inigo youth pastoral group in September. Suddenly I had to start to deal with many things: spiritual days, retreats for high school classes, for young adults. I had to write a scenario for this, to read specialized literature and to be present among the youth in a natural way. How and where should I start it? The answer: magis. First of all, I prayed for all these new things which affected me depressingly initially. And then the strategy of little steps. At first I paid attention to my companions, who have already had more experience in this. I felt here first the joy and the power of common work. After the first missions I started to feel the taste of teamwork. The common evaluations and feedbacks helped me to see my weaknesses and my strengths, myself. Then the first independent works came: offering retreats together with a companion, often without my team leader. As an adult (with many years teaching experience behind me) I started my journey on the road of Jesuit maturity. 4 BARÁTAINKNAK

5 Spirituality There is something poignant in this. I follow the deep desire found in me, the clear voice which is calling me to follow Christ. Then I face the first difficulties, which are obstacles on this road. Intuitively my human reaction leads me to give it up. All I can do is that I cry to Him and I offer Him these obstacles. Then I am waiting with patience, I can say also that helplessly. I let God break down in me these obstacles, the old man and to build up the new one. Old habits, ideas, strategies become useless in this new life. As for me, I try to let these go. It hurts, I mourn for them. I feel often big emptiness, after they left me. But I am trying to keep my eyes on Him, who aroused the desire in me to follow Jesus more closely and who invited me to His Companionship. Living with Him gives me deep joy, which is also with me in my most difficult times. I experience a dialogue and a relationship with Him. I am talking to Him and He is listening to me and He answers me somehow. After mourning, when something dies in me from the old person, I am enriched with something new which brings me closer to Him, to the people and to myself. I experience a continuously deepening relationship, dialogue, friendship. S. György Hiba, SJ Is it harder? Our Friend and reader Mária Enid Csanády sent us this little story. The confessor of my mother, Father Vid was also a Jesuit. My mother went to him to the prison many times (the father died there). She told me one of their conversations. Now I tell it to You in order that You give it further as well, to your fellow order members and to other people. My mother:» Father, what should I do when two paths are in front of me and both of them are right? Which one should I choose? «Father Vid:» Always the harder one.«autumn

6 Vocation Vocation as to follow I greet our dear Friends as the new vocation promoter of the Hungarian Jesuits! The topic of this autumn issue is the magis. Therefore I was thinking that I will point at two inner voices stemming from this word which maybe the dear reader knows well, too. They are two fine inner movements, which are similar but they bring us to different directions and following one or the other strongly determines what our attitude is towards our vocation and towards the promotion of the vocations. MAGIS: what we can see or what He can see? The first voice sounds something like this: the magis, the spirituality of the greater good calls us to do something big, to use our gifts better, to do something prominent for Christ, to build something better, more fair, permanent, which is more, which is above the average. This voice is pointed at us, at our goodwill, at our plans and our actions. The questions of the voice to us sound like this: What should I do, from which more good could be born? What should I change to be better? Do I have enough strength? Do I give my best? Is it enough, what I am doing? By comparison, the other voice speaks to us in a more mild-tempered manner and it says: the spirituality of the magis calls us to recognize that the Greater Good is already here among us. This voice is not pointed at us, but at the present and living God. It calls us to pay attention to God and not to ourselves. We should look at what God does and not necessarily where we would intuitively look. He encourages us to rely on His logic and voice and not on our own plans and devices. The questions of the voice pointed towards God sound like this: How do I see him? Where is he? If I can look at him, how do I feel about him? How does he look at the actual situation? How does he look at me, at us? What is he calling me for? As the companions of Jesus, we are invited to follow this second voice, similarly to how Jesus lived himself: entirely focusing on the Father. This is the same inner voice that touched, reshaped and filled with endless joy and safety St. Ignatius and the many Jesuits before us. 6 BARÁTAINKNAK

7 Vocation This is relaxing because it is good to be on the side of the living and active God! It is deep, exciting, rousing, vitalizing and qualitatively different. It is more when we are with Him! Creating or caring for vocations? versation on the road of finding the voice and the calling of God. I would like to ask for your prayers for me and for those I am sent to by the Lord right now. As the vocation promoter of the Jesuits I am sent to look for, to live by and to care for this latter voice. I have to admit now, at the beginning, that I will not be able to create vocations somebody else does that. However, looking for the voice of God and caring gor it I will be able to do that. 8 Jesuit Outlook Arrival of the Vietnamese Regents to Hungary The Jesuit Province of Vietnam is one of the fastest growing provinces with more than two hundred members. Fruits of the promising growth are Van Ngu Tran and Quoc Tuan Nguyen who have just finished their studies in Philosophy. They arrived to Budapest in June in order to be a part of our mission, to join the Hungarian Province. First they started to learn the language in the Jesuit community in Miskolc. We asked them about their motivation and hopes. What did attract you to embark on a mission and to Hungary? Ngu: I am very happy to share something about my motivation going to mission in Hungary. There are three main points that attracted me. Firstly, God loved me first. I vividly remember the first feeling, peace and happiness, when I read the beautiful prayer of St. Ignatius: Take, Lord and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding and my entire will all that I have and call my own. You have given it to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours, do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace. That is enough for me. And this prayer led me to decide to follow the Jesuit vocation. Secondly, as I read the letter from the provincial of Hungary, Fr. Tamás, I realized that I have received a gift from the Hungarian Jesuits: One Hungarian Jesuit came and served in Vietnam (before 1975), at that time the Vietnam Catholic Church lacked many laborers. I think that the Catholic Church in Vietnam as it is today is a result of the great gift of missionaries who have come to us, including a Hungarian Jesuit. So the other motivation why I chose the mission in Hungary is gratitude. Lastly, there is the motivation of faith. I know that the mission in Hungary has many challenges, but my vocation will be growing up in that situation. These challenges are the differences in culture, language and environment of living... Sometimes I felt a little bit afraid of living in a strange environment. However, it was a precious experience for my spiritual life. I 8 BARÁTAINKNAK

9 Jesuit Outlook had told God all feelings in my soul, and I felt a consolation in my heart. I feel being consoled because the mission in Hungary helps me to realize that I have many limitations, I need to rely on God, and He promised not to abandon me. Tuan: I also wondered what attracted me to the mission in Hungary. Before going to Hungary, I knew less about your country than about other places which I could choose for my regency. My choice and decision to go to mission to Hungary mainly rested on (1) listening from my heart to the call of God who has personally loved me and has personally called me to follow Him in new footsteps and new frontiers, with the attitude of availability and mobility. (2) deeply feeling the history of Jesuit missionaries who lived in the spirit of going and making disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19), who are St. Francis Xavier (the missionary to India and Japan), Roberto de Nobilis (to India), Matteo Ricci (to China), Alexandre de Rhodes (to Vietnam)..., and especially Hungarian Jesuits to serve in Vietnam before (3) and my way of thinking and believing and doing, because God be with us always to the end of time (Matthew 28:20). What are your expectations from Miskolc? Tuan: I do not expect an easy life in Miskolc, because it would be an illusion. However, I hope I will be capable of integrating into your culture, language and life without losing my identity. I look forward to a good friendship with you in the Lord, with a diversity to which each of us contributes. In Jesus Christ, we are one in diversity, and I hope to get this experience. Ngu: During the time in Miskolc, I hope to learn how to become a good friend of all people that I was sent to. 10 Society The final oath On 7th April, PP Attila András, SJ and Elemér Vízi, SJ took their final oath in the congregational chapel of the House of Dialogue within a holy mass. This writing about the occasion was prepared for the Reflexió Jesuit website. The two oath-takers finished their Jesuit training last year in Ireland with the socalled third probation, when they accomplished once again the great 30-day retreat of St. Ignatius, performed priestly services and social work as well, and studied again thoroughly the Jesuit basic documents and procedures. All of these happen in the Jesuit training to tame their soul back from the diverse practical works and tasks to be able to pay attention to the truly important: God. This is why the third probation is called the school of the heart. In his homily Fr. János Lukács, SJ talked about the significance of the final oath, about how this oath is the culmination of the Jesuit vocation but it is also a new starting point. After the two years of the novitiate the candidates take their poverty, purity and obedience vows, but they can step into the Society officially only after the third probation. Formerly for this occasion the following expression was used: now they are annexed by the Society, namely, they become entirely part PP Elemér Vízi, SJ (on the left) and Attila András. 11 Society of the Society s body. This is what is new in this momentum. It is important in this moment that they have gratitude for what they got in order that they could also give to the youth. It is important that they should learn to serve so that they do that never alone, that they could do everything in a way that in the first place is always the God, his love, his sacred will, and through this, connecting to this, they could accomplish everything that they begin. In the third probation, in the school of the heart, the Jesuits learn what is especially relevant in Easter time: recognize the resurrected Jesus. There is no place in this world where he is absent; the question is how we can recognize him. János Lukács said this connected to the daily evangel (John 20:11-18) and to the words of Pope Francis: Mary Magdalene helps us to step into the mystery of the resurrection. And this does not mean that we do not know crying, as it also means the sensibility of the heart. We can cry because of many things, but in the evangel Mary Magdalene cries because the Lord is not there. Then after a few moments she recognizes him in the stranger standing behind her. What are those words, which we have to hear, we have to say until the recognition is born that the Lord is here? Maria can bring the news to the disciples that she saw the Lord and this is the only one treasure of the Jesuits as well. The professionalism of the Jesuit means that he should be sensible to the presence of God. That he could say from the heart, from conviction: I saw the Lord. And that he could arouse also in others the interest, the faith or the hope, that he could show the way that this is possible. Attila András and Elemér Vízi are preparing for a way, where they will get newer and newer missions and within these the most important will be to form a community testifying the Lord. We are created to look for the Lord. We can find our peace and joy in Him while a life is authentic when crosses can be found in it, without looking for them. According to the Jesuit tradition the oaths happens immediately after the elevation of the Host, in front of the Eucharist held by the provincial presenting the mass. Attila András and Elemér Vízi took their oaths then, which was also the confirmation and the renewal of their vows. 12 Education FFA Trainings Again T he Faludi Ferenc Academy (FFA) has been operating inside the Province since The purpose of the diverse activities taking place here are youth and adult education outside the school and the promotion of various scientific works. Between 1995 and 2010 the academy organized hundreds of educational and other programs, gaining publicity and recognition in the Hungarian adult denominational education. Around 2010, when the House of Dialogue opened, the parallel operation of the two institutes followed; support of local programs intensified and the offer of educational programs was first reduced, and then was ceased altogether. I started my work at the academy in November 2014 at the calling of the provincial, with the purpose of re-introducing educational programs. Currently we are working on creating a Jesuit 12 BARÁTAINKNAK

13 Education training center, in accordance with the original purpose of the Faludi Academy. This work entails the unification of the existing educational programs of the order and the training requests from outside and the strengthening of the professional, organizational background for an Ignatian multiplier training. In the spring semester the programs were realized according to this and in the autumn semester the Academy will offer even more programs. At the beginning of my work I tried to meet those who have educational tasks among the Jesuits. Following the meetings a new circle formed, which cooperates on creating the new image if the Faludi Academy. Among our activities we emphasize the aim to familiarize the catholic teachers with the Ignatian pedagogy, and would like to help the sharing of good practices from the Jesuit high school in Miskolc within the framework Itt vagyunk, naponta. Jezsuiták Barátai facebook.com/jezsuitak of the Ignatian Pedagogical Workshop (Hungarian: Ignáci Pedagógiai Műhely, short form: IPM). A part of our program is realized as cooperation. An example is the drama workshop created together with the Parastudio of Szeged in the spring semester, or the very successful pilgrim leader training. Kinga Rivasz-Tóth (IPM-leader, Miskolc) and myself visited the Ignatian Pedagogical Center of Ludwigshafen in May, from where we returned home with useful experiences and with lots of ideas. Working here is a very nice opportunity for me; I gained much in the past half year I spent here so far. Personally it is serious challenge for me to balance the many exciting tasks at the Faludi Academy with my family waiting for me at home, with the busy life of my children. I hope that as a result of my work the trainings in the framework of the Faludi Academy will represent the Jesuit spirituality in a worthy manner as in previous years and many people will be enriched by them. 15 Közösségeink életéből Őrségváltás a KÉK-ben Keresztény Élet Közössége 2012-ben választott elnökségének mandátuma lejárt. A Az elnökség testületként működött: tagjai minden döntési helyzetben közösen cselekedtek. A tisztújító küldöttgyűlésen a régi teamből Papné Gyárfás Kati vállalta ismét a jelölést. Két új reménység is feltűnt: egyikük Nyilas Éva Szegedről, a másik Pusztainé Botka Mónika Vecsésről. Az egyhangúlag megválasztott három jelölt elődeitől egy kedves jelképet, egyegy pulikutya-figurát kapott, hiszen ők is a Jó Pásztornak fognak segíteni. Az elnökség feladata aprópénzre váltva lelkigyakorlatok kísérésének és sokféle más apostoli munkának a koordinálását jelenti; kapcsolattartást a KÉK-csoportok vezetőivel, pénzügyek intézését, az elköteleződés folyamatának kísérését. Kapcsolatot tart az európai régióval és a világközösséggel, a hazai propagandamunkát is beleértve, részt vesz a közös egyházmegyei, illetve országos találkozókon, a Párbeszéd Házában működő csoportok körében, s nem utolsósorban képességeihez mérten együttműködik a jezsuita apostoli munkákban. Egyházi asszisztensünk, P. Pakot Géza SJ az országhatáron túl kapott beosztást, ami megnehezítette számára, hogy ténylegesen végezhesse a KÉK-hez fűződő feladatait. Ezen a nyáron megnyugtató megoldásként a rend öt jezsuita szolgálatait kínálta fel a Kárpát-medencében: Budapesten és közvetlen környékén P. Horváth Árpád SJ, Szegeden P. Hess István SJ, Miskolcon F. Nagy Ernő SJ, Marosvásárhelyen P. Jakabos Barnabás SJ, Szatmárnémetiben Az új elnökség tagjai (balról): Pusztainé Botka Mónika, Papné Gyárfás Kati, Nyilas Éva pedig P. Pakot Géza SJ segítségét, aki egyúttal a közös egyházi asszisztens tisztségét is viseli, hogy a nemzetközi találkozókon ebben a minőségben vehessen részt a KÉK küldötteivel. A megfiatalodott új elnökség terveiről is essék szó: szorgalmazzuk a meglévő csoportok megerősödését. Hogy egymást jobban megismerjük, szeretnénk a havi találkozókat másmás helyszínen rendezni. Szeretnénk szélesebb körben reklámozni magunkat az egyházon belül, az internet adta lehetőségeket is kihasználva. Vajon hány plébánián hallottak már a KÉK-ről Magyarországon?! A városmissziós alkalmakon is bevált, hatékony KÉK-es módszereket megtartva új, mindenkit megszólító KÉK-ben gondolkozunk. E módszerek mindig is a jezsuitákkal való együttműködés keretében valósulhattak meg. Szeretnénk ezért a jezsuitákkal és más ignáci lelkiségű közösségekkel még hatékonyabban együtt gondolkozni, tervezni és szolgálni. Csak közösen lehetünk erősek az Úrban. 16 SJ Média Beszélgetések Süveges Gergővel a Párbeszéd Házában Mindannyian kapaszkodókat keresünk. Miközben ömlenek ránk az információk és értelmezéseik, miközben kapkodjuk a fejünket, és szeretnénk saját véleményt kialakítani a körülöttünk zajló eseményekről, azt tapasztaljuk, hogy nehéz az eligazodás, a körültekintő véleményalkotás, a pontos tájékozódás. Miközben többé-kevésbé tisztában vagyunk hitünk alapjaival, az egyház tanításával, legfontosabb értékeinkkel, olykor megtorpanunk, mert olyan kérdésekkel szembesülünk, amelyekre nincsenek kész válaszaink. Elbizonytalanodunk, az igen igen, nem nem gyakran alakul át bennünk, és lesz belőle egyrészt másrészt. Ami persze egyrészt nem baj, másrészt mégiscsak jó lenne igen nem válaszokat találnunk a legfontosabb kérdésekre. Egyszóval: kapaszkodókat keresünk. Tudni szeretnénk, mit is gondolunk, miért gondoljuk és hogy azt hogyan mondhatjuk el másoknak is. Ezért kezdtük el 2015 tavaszán a Párbeszéd Házában a beszélgetéseket. P. Sajgó Szabolcs SJvel és Kiss Márton médiareferenssel figyeljük a híreket, és lecsapunk azokra a témákra, amelyek érdekesek, sokakat érintenek, és amelyekkel kapcsolatban muszáj megfogalmaznunk a katolikus alapokon álló véleményünket. Célunk, hogy több nézőpontot is meg tudjunk mutatni, ezért két partnert hívunk az alkalmakra. Két beszélgetésünk volt eddig: májusban az iszlám és Európa kapcsolatáról esett szó Rostoványi Zsolttal és Nógrádi Györggyel, júniusban pedig az egynemű párok házasságáról és a homoszexualitás megítéléséről Léderer Andrással és Szőnyi Szilárddal. Mindkét este fényesen bizonyította: ha nem a másik legyőzése, hanem a meghallgatása a cél, ha érvek találkoznak érvekkel, ha a tisztelet sugárzik beszélőből, hallgatóból és hozzászólóból egyaránt, akkor mindannyian gazdagodhatunk. Nem célunk, hogy meggyőzzük egymást. De az igen, hogy jobban értsük, mihez képest fogalmazzuk meg a saját véleményünket. Ősszel folytatjuk. Mert két ember között a mosoly a legrövidebb, de a párbeszéd a leghasznosabb út. Süveges Gergő 16

17 SJ Média A jezsuita múlt aktualitása Az én Szívem Nagymamám nagymamája a negyvenes években egy kis borsodi faluban előfizetője volt A Szív folyóiratnak. Később, amikor tizenéves lettem, a padlásunkról lassan vándorolni kezdtek üveges szekrényembe A Szív régi számai, és kincsként őriztem ezeket a példányokat. Most, lapunk jubileumának apropóján ezekből a régi számokból szoktam válogatni írásokat A Szívbe. Ezt a rovatot olvasva talán Önök is érzik, hogy jubileumi mottónk találó lett: A Szív régi és mindig új. Június 12-én, Jézus Szíve ünnepén, olvasóinkkal együtt adtunk hálát a száz évért a Jézus Szíve-templomban. A szentmise utáni agapén ilyen szép számban még egyik évben sem vettünk részt, mégis idén éreztem a legcsaládiasabbnak a találkozást. Jubileumi évünk következő jelentős eseményeként szeptember 25-én szimpóziumot rendezünk, amelynek témája A Szív története lesz. Történészek, sajtótörténészek előadásai segítenek majd fellapozni folyóiratunk elmúlt száz évének színes és fekete-fehér lapjait, felidézni ínséges és bőséges napjait. Erre az eseményre is Dudás Tamás várjuk minden kedves olvasónkat. 17

18 VOLUNTEERING In Nepal when the Disaster Happened In the autumn of 2014 I spent 3 month in the School of Jesuits in Nepal as a volunteer. Fr. Szabolcs Sajgó directed me to this poor Asian country, when we talked about my desire to serve in a place which is far away and which differs from my usual environment. I left the world of software development and I decided in favor of Nepal as part of my soul-searching. My service in the school in Godavari, the jovial life of the people living there, the missions of the Jesuits and my many new friends from Nepal helped me share my spiritual experiences besides the travel experiences with many others on my return. It became quickly clear that I will return some day to this poor, but from many aspects, wonderful country. The opportunity came up quickly when my Jesuit friend from Nepal, Tek-Raj wrote me the time of his ordination. Not half a year has passed and I was again in Nepal. The ordination took place in the home village of Tek (Okhaldunga- Takerbari). The bishop of Nepal consecrated Tek on the schoolyard of the little Hindu village, under a tent. The catholic feast which was unknown to the locals so far attracted everyone to that area. After the end of the ordination less than 10 minutes passed when a terrible earthquake shook the region. The shocking news of the natural disaster travelled soon the world, but there were no news that a little village in Nepal survived. Although lots of houses collapsed, nobody got hurt, since everybody was in the schoolyard. It was clear It was very clear for the local people that the God of the Christians rescued them. They have been talking about this since then. They will remember the majestic feast and the visit of the Christian guests in Tarkerbari forever. As for myself, whenever I can, I tell that the providence of God is very clear from time to time. My voluntary service was the beginning of the road, where I have again and again the opportunity to testify to the providence of God and the values of life. Gergő Szabó Budakeszi 18 BARÁTAINKNAK

20 In Memoriam For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that Br. Rudolf Feigl, SJ.was born on November 23, 1921 in Szigetújfalu. After the primary school he was confectioner servant in Makó, and he started his novitiate in Manreza in Budapest as a helping brother. He escaped Hungary next to the Lake Fertő in He served the scholastics in Chieri, North Italy, then in Eegenhoven, Belgium. He went to Hamilton, Canada in 1954, where he served in the St. Stephen church for 4 years ( ), then in the community of the St. László church in Courtland for 15 years. He practiced the tertianship in Cleveland in 1963, after that he took his vow. In 1973 he was relocated to the St. Elizabeth parish, where he was paying attention to the servers zealously. In 2004 he was called home by the provincial, but in 2007 Rudolf asked to return to Canada and became a resident of the St. Elizabeth Home in Hamilton. After a short illness, on January 8, 2015 he passed away in the St. John Hospital in Hamilton. Fr. Béky Gellért, SJ was born in Üllő in In 1943 he entered the Jesuit order. He completed his philosophical studies at the Jesuit College in Szeged. He was forced to leave Hungary because of communism and completed his studies in Innsbruck and Maastricht. He applied to the mission to Japan where during his 40-year long service he taught thelogy at the University of Osaka and Kobe. In the meantime he became a sought-after spiritual retreat leader. He was an enthusiastic scolar of the Japanese culture and understood deeply the soul of the people of the Far East. In 1997 he returned to Hungary and served in Szeged, Hódmezővásárhely and Tahi until his death. He passed away on January 26, Fr. Tamás Beöthy, SJ was born on February 15, 1927 in Budapest. He was attending the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Technology when he got to know the Jesuits who lived underground, then he started the secret novitiate in He got his degree in He fled abroad in 1956 because of his engagement during the revolution and he took his vows in Austria in Between 1958 and 1964 he studied Philosophy and Theology in Ireland, and his ordination took place in Dublin in In he practiced the tertianship in Münster, and then he took his ceremonial vows in 1971 in Canada. Overseas first he taught German in Rochester (New York State), then he was chaplain in Hamilton, Canada. In Courtland (Ontario) he was first chaplain, then parson. Between 1980 and 1989 he was serving as priest in the St. Mary Hospital in London (Ontario), while he was completing the clinical practice in Smiths- Falls (Ontario) in 1985 as well. He was one of the first ones to return home to Hungary in First he was chaplain in the St. Stephen church in Kalocsa, then he lived in Budapest from He travelled the country from there conducting retreats and he got to know the Cursillo and the Married Weekend movements in our country. After long suffering he passed away on February 11, 2015.

21 whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) Fr. Béla Somfai, SJ was born in 1932 in Sárszentmiklós. Because of the dissolution of the orders he started to study Theology at the Seminar of Eger in 1950, one year later he continued it in the Seminar of Veszprém, which was dissolved in He started then the Jesuit subterranean novitiate. After physical work and a 2 year long armed military service he continued his Theology studies in 1954 as a civil student. He left for the West in 1956, then he took his first vows in Austria in 1957, and in 1959 he graduated in Philosophy at the Gregorian University. He graduated in Theology at the Toronto Regis College in 1963 after his ordination which took place in 1961 in the same place. He got his PhD at the University Ottawa, and D.Th at the St. Paul University. He was teaching moral theology and bioethics at the Toronto School of Theology almost 30 years long, while he was also dean of the theological faculty and the leader of the department of theology. He was working at the Medical College of Georgia, at the Institute for Medical Humanities of Montreal and at the bioethics research institute of McGill University. He was teaching as visiting professor at the University of Saint Louis, at the Sophia University of Tokyo and at the Enugu in Nigeria. He became emeritus in 1993 and returned to Hungary. In Szeged he was senior professor and educational vice-rector of the department of ethics and bioethics of the Theological College till He passed away on Easter Monday of 2015 in Toronto after long suffering. In Memoriam P. Róna Gábor SJ 1929-ben született Kiskunhalason. A kalocsai iskolanővérek elemi iskolájában, majd Kalocsán, a jezsuitáknál tanult ben nyert felvételt a noviciátusba augusztus 15-én, az esedékes fogadalomtétel napján kellett elhagynia az országot, és így menekültként fogadalmazott augusztus 28-án. Németországban, Pullachban kezdte el a juniorátust. Ezt követőn filozófiai tanulmányait a belgiumi Eegenhovenben végezte őszén Granadában kezdte el teológiai tanulmányait július 15-én szentelték pappá től Ecuadorban szolgált harminc éven át, főleg iskolalelkészként, de volt templomi szolgálatban, illetve kórház- és börtönlelkész is évi hazalátogatásakor ismerte meg a Szeretetláng lelkinaplót, amelynek továbbadása nagyon fontos részévé vált életének és 2008 között a Szeretetláng Mozgalom nemzetközi koordinátora volt. Hasonlóan lelkesen segítette a Keresztény Édesanyák Szent Mónika Közösségét ben az elsők között tért haza, és Kalocsán a jezsuita templomot vezette nyolc éven át től két évig volt a miskolci jezsuita gimnázium hittanára, majd 2002-től a pesti Jézus Szíve-templom segédlelkészeként szolgált. 22 Friendraising Surpassing All Do you know that there are people whose lives are more difficult than yours? 328 good-hearted donors were moved for this idea so far this year that is until 14th June. Their total donations are already more than 8 million HUF, which we sent to Antal Majnek diocesan in Munkács, who distributes the donations in Transcarpathia. It is wonderful to see the most successful residential fundraising of our last 8 years. The success belongs to those helpful people unequivocally, who felt that they have to stand by the case, by the Transcarpathians. Thank you to everyone that they were our partners in this work as well! Meanwhile Our Friends paid attention also to the spring request. We would have liked to make available the 100-year-old A Szív (The Heart) magazine to even more people. Therefore we asked the National Association of Large Families (in Hungarian: Nagycsaládosok Országos Egyesülete, NOE) that they offer to their members, to the large families, annual subscriptions from the donations. So the monthly magazine can reach those as well who could not afford to buy it from their own resources. In this way we could provide nice intellectual and spiritual reading for 150 families this year. The new media, the world of the internet are great media to spread, to popularize and to make available the Christian values. Along with this they provide an opportunity for social dialogue, which has variable common surfaces. This channel cannot be missed today. One mission of the Jesuits is to serve as media apostles. Another new success is that the number of the followers of our Facebook-site, the Friends of Jesuits, reached over 5000 this year. We fill it every day with fresh content and we trust in that everybody can find at least one interesting and useful piece of news weekly. We share the writings of our Reflexió site also here and interesting and important news from the central Jesuit website (jezsuita.hu) which will renew in autumn as well. We are grateful for your donations any time of the year to the accounts of our Foundation, through the channels that can be found on the back of the newspaper. When we do not support an actual fundraising, we support the function of our Foundation from the donations arriving here. It is important to say: serious work of several people stands behind every fundraising campaign, and these tasks need resources as well. They provide annual income for student aid and for the scholarly activities of our teachers.
