Information The written exam is 180 minutes long. The exam sheet contains a short film extract on DVD. At the beginning of the exam, candidates watch the film or programme extract that goes with the question sheet. After the question sheets have been handed out, candidates have three minutes to study the questions. Candidates watch the extract again, then start working on the question sheet. Candidates may watch the extract again (for a third time) if so required by anyone. This will take place at the beginning of the last 30 minutes before they hand in the worksheet. Candidates may only use the question sheets. No other help is allowed. The written exam question sheet consists of three sections: - Questions testing knowledge and facts. This part carries a maximum 20% of the total; - Questions testing the comprehension of moving image on the basis of the extract shown. This part carries a maximum 50% of the total. - Question testing the ability to define and analyse problems concerning mass media. This part carries a maximum 30% of the total. MEDIA MINIESSAY (maximum 15 points) 13. Read the following case report: Slovak Eva Varholíková Rezesová caused an accident on the M3 in 2012, and was charged with drunkdriving and causing the deaths of four people. Rezesová has two children under 18 and is a well-known figure in social life in Kassa. She features regularly in Slovak tabloids. Her first husband is a celebrated ice-hockey player. Her father, who died a few years ago, was Alexander Rezes the Slovak millionaire, former minister in Meciar s government, and made his fortune by the privatisation of the ironworks factory in Kassa. Rezesová, found guilty of causing a fatal accident by drunk-driving, was sentenced to 6 years in prison by the court of first instance. According to technical experts the car suffering the accident might have been overtaking illegally before the crash. Both defendant and prosecutor appealed against the judgement. The defendant was released and was sentenced to house arrest by the court. Antal Rogán, who heads the ruling Fidesz party s parliamentary caucus, called for an examination of the amendment when it turned out that the defendant is allowed to spend her house arrest in an elegant residential area while waiting for further appeals. Within 4 hours of the party group leader s objection, the appeal court withdrew Rezesová s right to house arrest and she was taken into custody again. In 2014 the appeal court excluded the technical experts from the procedure, who were the major participants of the sentence at first instance. On the basis of the opinion of new technical experts, according to the final judgement of the court of second-instance Eva Rezesová is guilty, so she was sentenced to 9 years imprisonment. The final judgement and stricter sentence was applauded by the victims relatives. If you enter Rezesová s name into an Internet search engine, you can find more than 130,000 websites. There are thousands of articles, television and radio programmes, news, reports and analitical content about the case. Write a short analytical essay entitled The Rezesová Case in which you give possible reasons as to why the media dealt with the topic continuously for two years. a) In your essay name at least two factors connected to the main character s special situation which could have caused this highlighted media attention.
