Even though we are small, we are dedicated to our church and its mission to serve God. On November 3, 2013 we celebrated our 105th Anniversary. We wanted to pay homage to those Hungarian immigrants who established this church; indeed, before they built their own homes. We thank God for our sister congregations, who came to worship with us. To see our church pews filled and over-flowing with our friends and family was incredible. We had representation from: First Hungarian Reformed Church of Pittsburgh, PA. First Hungarian Reformed Church of Homestead, PA. Free Hungarian Reformed Church of McKeesport, PA. Hungarian Reformed Church of Duquesne, PA. Hungarian Reformed Church of Fairport Harbor, OH. West Side Hungarian Reformed Church of Cleveland, OH. First Hungarian Reformed Church of Walton Hills, OH. The Hungarian Reformed Church of Lorain, OH. Bethlen Communities, Ligonier, PA. William Penn Association, Pittsburgh, PA. Reverend Csaba Krasznai, Auxiliary Bishop of Calvin Synod and Pastor of Walton Hills First Hungarian Reformed Church delivered an encouraging message. We were enamored by his eloquent presentation. Bishop Bela Poznan sent us a congratulatory letter from Hungary, which was very gracious. Reverend Joseph Posta, who once served our congregation, represented the Hungarian Reformed Church of Duquesne, Vintondale and Springdale. He has demonstrated great leadership by serving these small congregations faithfully. It was inspiring to see these ministers from our Hungarian churches take part in the service. Reverend Albert Kovacs, from Ligonier, who serves Johnstown Hungarian Reformed Church. Reverend Ilona Komjathy, who serves the Pittsburgh First Hungarian Reformed Church. Reverend Judith Tobias, who serves the Homestead First Hungarian Reformed Church. Reverend Peter Toth, from the First Hungarian Reformed Church of Lorain suffered a catastrophic injury to his arm. He continues to lead his congregation and inspires us all to continue to operate in any adversity for the Kingdom of God. Reverend Daniel Borsay, who also continues to preach and

CALVIN SYNOD HERALD 3 A Prayer of David Psalm 17 "Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit! From thee let my vindication come! Let thy eyes see the right! If thou triest my heart, if thou visitest me by night, if thou testest me, thou wilt find no wickedness in me; my mouth does not transgress. With regard to the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have avoided the ways of the violent. My steps have held fast to thy paths, my feet have not slipped. I call upon thee, for thou wilt answer me, O God; incline thy ear to me, hear my words. Wondrously show thy steadfast love, O savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at thy right hand. Keep me as the apple of the eye; hide me in the shadow of thy wings, from the wicked who despoil me, my deadly enemies who surround me. They close their hearts to pity; with their mouths they speak arrogantly. They track me down; now they surround me; they set their eyes to cast me to serve his congregation through many health challenges. This dedicated group of ministers is an inspiration to us all. Finally, we come to Reverend Imre A. Bertalan, who served our congregation for more than 10 years. He is the Executive Director of Bethlen Communities and he has made our church his spiritual priority. Mr. Wilburn Roby assists him as Licensed Lay Minister and serves us faithfully. Of course, the children s moments, led by Kati Csoman, were so relevant. How can they know our history, unless we teach them? The children are in reality, the future church. We have a great legacy to carry on. Are we up to the challenge? When I think about the love of Christ, I think about Mrs. Louis Medgyesi, who fed the underprivileged children breakfast in her church at Fairport Harbor for many years. When I think about the love of Christ I think of Reverend Daniel Borsay, who led his church to support our congregation, as their mission church, when we were in need. When I think about the love of Christ I think about Reverend Ilona Komjathy, who took up a collection in Pittsburgh to help pay for our new church doors. All these acts if love are what Christ calls us to do to support one another. God bless those acts of love. It has been a privilege to serve this congregation and I have relied on my church family and God s providence to carry me through trying circumstances. We are grateful to everyone who came to celebrate this milestone in our church life. We are grateful to God for this marvelous display of His Majesty. To God Be the Glory Arlene Csoman, Chief Elder and The Congregation of Third Avenue Calvin Reformed Church the ground. They are like a lion eager to tear, as a young lion lurking in ambush. Arise, O Lord! confront them, overthrow them! Deliver my life from the wicked by thy sword, from men by thy hand, O Lord, from men whose portion in life is of the world. May their belly be filled with what thou hast stored up for them; may their children have more than enough; may they leave something over to their babes. As for me, I shall behold thy face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with beholding thy form." Dear Sisters and Brothers in Calvin Synod! At the beginning of this New Year, we look to God s Word to guide us to an understanding of the past events, to learn from it, and to provide direction for the future. Psalm 17 is a special prayer of King David which John Calvin summarized in the following way "This psalm contains a mournful complaint against the cruel pride of David's enemies. He protests that he did not deserve to be persecuted with such inhumanity, inasmuch as he had given them no cause for exercising their cruelty against him. At the same time, he asks God, as his protector, to put forth his power for his deliverance." In this Psalm, King David presents his faith and confidence in God. He tells God about the injustice which he is experiencing when his enemies are hunting him like a wild animal and want to destroy him. Even in the midst of difficulties he is sure of God s help. He is aware that God understands his situation and he trusts in His deliverance. He does not wish ill on his enemies and he is free from envy. He does not focus on the richness of his foes and he is not envious of their joys. He trusts the Lord. To him life, honor, satisfaction, joy, and the future can be found in fullness in the Lord. He expresses his greatest comfort about the temporal and eternal future which he finds in the Lord Himself. "As for me, I shall behold thy face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with beholding thy form." Surely, we are experiencing many difficulties today in the world and in the Christian church. Our problems may be different or similar to those of David. Many of us are concerned about the pressing economic situation, alienation in our families and communities, or disillusion and the loss of hope for the future. Certainly our faith in and faithfulness to God is severely tested. Is it possible to remain faithful to God and not to depart from the community of faith? Yes, and David s Psalm can be an encouragement to all of us! The future is unknown to us. As the Proverbs teach, Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. The Psalmist and we know that God knows the future and we need to trust in Him alone. Then we will be satisfied, protected, and blessed by the nearness and presence of God, not just in the New Year 2014 but for all eternity. Peace and Blessings to you in the New Year! Rt. Rev. 4 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD Telling The Story RECAPITULATION HEILSGESCHICTE Our late Bishop Francis Vitez was studying in Paris when the Russian Communists controlled Slovakia after World War 2, and they refused to let him return to his family in Györke, near Kassa. After many difficult and often hungry days he was allowed to come to America as a refugee. His English was still about zero when he was suddenly given a chance to seek election in a small Pennsylvania church. One of the members asked him not to use big words. In his usual light hearted manner, he recalled saying, I wish I knew some big words. Sometime big words are a big problem, but they can be a shortcut in expressing ideas when communicating. Two big words are recapitulation and heilsgeschicte. If we look at the first, it looks a lot like recapture, and it means thoughtfully reviewing a subject for its meaning. The other word, heilsge-schichte, speaks about the entire holy drama of salvation recounted historically in the Bible as a soul-redeeming act of God from Alpha to Omega (A-Z in the Greek alphabet), from the beginning to the ending, from before Genesis to after Revelation. A New Year Task In the Advent-Christmas season just past, the people of God in their churches have recapitulated the part of the story covering the fall of sinful humankind and the promises of God to restore them by a Savior. Then they gathered in the churches to retell the story of the Savior who came among them, with joyous celebrations in the churches to review the events in scripture readings, with the witness of sermons, prayers and hymns. The New Year brings with it weekly worship when the story told in the Gospels will recapitulate the life of Jesus, the Son of God, beginning with his adoration by the Magi, its meaning for the salvation of the Gentiles, the Christ s temptation by Satan, and his brief ministry. Shortly, it turns to Jesus last days among his disciples, his abandonment and death, and the awesome days of his resurrection and ascension. This part of the story ends with his gift of the guiding Spirit, as he had promised, and his creation of the Church. The New Church s Dramatic Role It was never the intention of Christ that his Church should be a historical society, with ancient scrolls in its archives to be protected. The Church of his people was from its beginning to be a living part of the drama of salvation, writing the story just as it was written in the past by the ancients, Hebrew patriarchs and prophets, kings and psalmists, slaves in Egypt and Babylon, and builders of Jerusalem. The holy drama of salvation was to be written in the times to come by those obedient to Jesus: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always to the close of the age. This drama, like an unfinished symphony, is still being written this year by the Savior s true followers, the Christians who bring their children, family, friends and strangers to baptism. These hear the story recapitulated by the Church, worshipping with long time members and in study of the scriptures, and learn to tell it to yet others themselves. Through the year the Church retells the old, old story, and its members live daily guided by it as they write their stories next to the ones alongside and before. When New Years Are No More The New Year has its turn and its time passes, and so for the children of God. But when there are no more, and even time is no more, God is still writing: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord henceforth. Blessed indeed, that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them. It is here in this life that our roles and faithfulness are recorded. Also another book was opened which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, by what was done. And so we know, there will be a recapitulation of our lives and place in the holy drama of salvation. Rev. Albert W. Kovacs Anyone who imagines Christ as he will gets nothing but a mere blur. So, we must first hold that Christ is known rightly nowhere but in Scripture. If this be so, our chief purpose in read ing the Scriptures must be to arrive at a right knowledge of Christ. Whoever turns aside from this aim, even though he wear himself out with learning all his life, will never arrive at truth; for what wisdom can we attain apart from the wisdom of God?. Many are deprived of this blessing because they neglect reading the Scriptures, or do it cursorily or superficially. - Commentaries John Calvin CALVIN SYNOD SCHOOL FUND Gabriella Nadas, coordinator News from Kolozsvár: Dear Supporters, If you were a student attending the Kolozsvári Református Kollégium and a member of the chorus, preparation for Christmas would center around choir practice and performances. On Dec. 8th the choir traveled to the Nagy Templom (Large Church) in Debrecen, Hungary and performed there followed by a performance at the theological seminary. This was followed on the 14th by a performance for the school in the Farkas Street Church and on the 18th, by an outreach concert with the orthodox school choir. And then on Dec 20th vacation time!! Principal Árpád Székely brings us up to date on the newest changes at the school: First of all let me thank you all, for your support, we are so grateful. I read this year s letter aloud to all the students and staff about your generous donations, it truly means a lot to so many in need. This year we have two preschool classes, whose teachers are our former students! Our grade school from kindergarten through 8th is doing very well. We had great results on the universal graduation exams and this has added to the good name of our school, which makes us one of the top choice schools. Our ninth grade is filled to capacity with Continued on page 10

CALVIN SYNOD HERALD 5 BY A DIFFERENT ROAD Scripture: Matthew 2:1-2:12 I suspect that nearly every family has a nativity, or crèche displayed somewhere around the house during the Christmas season. And if your crèches are anything like mine, they include Mary and Joseph, shepherds, plenty of animals, three wise men, and of course, the baby Jesus.. They serve as a reminder of that Divine King born in the most humble of human circumstances so many years ago. We ve all heard the story many times in our lives; we know the sequence of events surrounding Jesus birth nearly by heart. And so our crèches reflect the story. By tradition the baby Jesus is not placed in the manger until Christmas Eve or Christmas day. And the wise men come even later. Twelve days later to be exact, but who s counting? But did you know that if we were to be completely precise, the wise men wouldn t actually appear until about two years after Christmas! Tradition has led us to assume many things about these men that the Bible does not tell us. For one, we often refer to them as kings, which is probably not accurate. To call them wise is probably fair, as the mostly likely possibility is that these men were astrologers. We have always referred to them as the three wise men, but we do not actually know their number; all we know for sure is that they brought three gifts on their long journey from the East. These men had seen a very unusual star, or perhaps an unusual alignment of several stars, that signaled to them the birth of divine royalty. So, like captains charting a course by the stars in the middle of the vast ocean, these mean set off to follow the star. Their journey brought them to the hillside country of Judea. And assuming that the star indicated a birth in the house of the ruler, they went first to the king s house, Herod s home. Where is the King of the Jews? they asked Herod. The question was completely innocent, but it was also the beginning of Jesus troubles. Herod didn t like the question, of course, because he WAS the King of the Jews, and the fact that it was being asked by some exotic men who had journeyed from a distant country was even more troubling to the king. The thought that there was a rival to his throne was terribly disturbing for him. So we get the sense that a plan begins to form in Herod s head. But first, he needs to know where this newborn King of the Jews is. As innocently as possible, Herod instructs the magi to go out and find the baby, then to report back to him about where he is. So the magi go, continuing to follow the star that had led them there to Judea. And sure enough, it leads them right to the doorstop of the home where the child Jesus is now living with Mary and Joseph. Immediately upon entering, the magi know they are in the presence of the most wonderful king to ever be born. So they do the only thing they know how in the presence of a king. They fall to their knees to honor him, and they offer gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These are men from a distant land; many, many months journey away. They may have heard of the race called Jews, but they likely had no knowledge of their status as God s chosen people. They would ve known little to nothing about God s covenants with the Jewish people, and the words of the prophets hailing the coming of a king who would establish justice and peace for all eternity. But when they saw Jesus, they suddenly knew that this was a special king. And though he was called King of the Jews, the magi from the East knew that Jesus was their king, too. Simeon and Anna, the Jewish couple in the Temple, already knew of the Messiah now in their midst when Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to be circumcised. But it is the reaction of these great men, who have journeyed so far, that gives us the first idea of just how big Jesus kingdom will be. As we watch the whole scene unfold yet again, it raises what I think is an important, post-christmas question: Jesus is here, what are you going to do about it? We have just celebrated again the birth of Jesus Christ. We have been reminded of God s eternal presence with us through Emmanuel. We have sung songs, baked goodies, opened gifts; all in honor of our Savior s birth. Perhaps through the season we have even felt the wonderful warmth and assurance of Christ being born in our own hearts and lives; either for the first time, or the fiftieth. So what are we going to do about it? If we are going to truly know and celebrate a different kind of Christmas, this is a crucial question. Jesus birth means nothing if it is not celebrated throughout the year. Jesus birth means nothing if it does not change our lives. And I m not talking about lives changed for just a few days or weeks. I m talking lives changed for years to come. The wise men followed that star for several months, if not years. They did not stray from their path; they did not abandon their journey. They pressed on until they found what they were looking for. And when they did, they fell to their knees in worship of this tiny king. They knew their lives would never be the same, and so the worshipped the King of kings and Lord of lords. Wonderful counselor, mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of peace. Let me ask you this question: Is your worship worthy of this king who has been born in our midst? When the magi found Jesus, they didn t say, Great, there he is! We ll come back after we ve grabbed a bite to eat and watched the game. We ll just drop in when it s more convenient. No. They fell to their knees right then and there to worship their king. And we should do no less. After all the gifts are opened and our bellies are full, the least, the LEAST, we can do is bow down to worship our Savior and say Thank you to God for the countless ways he has blessed our lives. But really, there s even more we should do. Worship is not just about honoring God, it s also about giving back to God generously, in the same way that God has given to us. Did you remember Jesus on your gift list this year? Did you set aside a gift worthy of a king? Sadly, our general practice around Christmastime is to give gifts to one another, forgetting that it is Jesus birthday. This is no way to honor our Savior, we are worshipping one another and our stuff, instead of worshipping God. And the result is that lives are broken by debt, jealously, and broken dreams. Jesus did not come to take our lives, he came to give us life. And the way we experience that life is by giving to God in the same way that God has given to us. Continued on page 6

6 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD Third Avenue Calvin Reformed Church 105th Years Celebration 1Timothy 1:14 NIV A wise old man said that the good old days were good because they had come and gone. It is very easy to reminisce about the good old days and complain about the future that is knocking at our door. The future brings about change in our lives, and that scares us. Older people cannot take the changes. The old ways are better to them. The future also holds the promise of something new, and that excites us. The Lord told the people of Judah to forget about the past and to prepare for the new things. This is what this congregation did last week when they celebrated 105 years of the church. We should be putting away the things of the past and think about the new direction that the Lord is leading us. Let us rejoice in the eternal hope that God is about to lead this congregation in a new direction, that will be a benefit to His Glory and the lives of this congregation. I thought this morning I would share my reflections on last week s 105th. Church Anniversary. In 1 Timothy 1:14, The grace of our Lord was poured out on me (Paul) Abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Last week I felt and witnessed that faith and love. At this point in my life I have attended many Anniversaries and celebrations, dedications, but the 105th. Anniversary of 3rd. Avenue was By A Different Road Continued from page 5 Jesus is here, so what are we going to do about it? After the wise men honored Jesus with worship and gifts, it was time for them to return to their homeland. But remember, their lives had been changed by this encounter with the Living Christ. They now understand completely the significance of this little boy in Bethlehem. So, it is no surprise that when they are approached in a dream and warned not to return to Herod, they act again in a way that honors the Christ-child. Their time in Jesus presence has assured them that this is indeed the King of the Jews and the Savior of the world. And they have no doubt that if they go back to Herod to share what they have found, the child will be killed. So they immediately begin their long journey back home, but, so as to avoid Herod, they return by a different road. So must we. Christ has come into our very midst. Emmanuel has been born among us. God s kingdom has broken into this world. But it is all for naught if we do not follow a different path. Because, remember, God s kingdom is not of this world. God s ways are not our ways. Jesus birth is meaningless if our lives our still ruled by selfishness, money, consumerism, violence, and hatred. We have to follow a different path, the path that Jesus prepared for us through his very own life. This is the way of selflessness, generosity, humility, peace, and love. It may indeed be the road less traveled, but it is the road that assures Christ s continuing presence and growing kingdom in our world. The gift is of God, but the choice is ours. SMT different. Virginia said that the atmosphere was different than she had seen in the past. As I came down 3rd. Avenue what a beautiful sight to see the front doors open and Endre greeting people. I must pause here and thank Butch and Joe for the work that they have done and the beauty of those doors. My first thought was thank you Lord, we are alive and the doors are open and beautiful. Arlene as Chief Elder welcomed everyone in love. I felt that love coming from her and our guests. Kati Csoman continued this love as she led children s moments that was priceless as she held up the picture of the first church, manse and members. As I think back about that picture, those members had to be looking down on us Sunday with a smile and were very proud of their church. This was the first visit for the Auxiliary Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Csaba Krasznai of The First Hungarian Reformed Church of Walton Hills. I can identify with his feeling the presence of the Holy Spirit when he entered the Sanctuary. Having been a member here for 13 years I still feel that Spirit when I enter the Sanctuary. We were blessed with the Clergy and members of Congregations in Pa. and Ohio, friends from the William Penn and the Community of Beaver Falls, and Pittsburgh. From the day the invitations went out until 11:45 am on Sunday, our telephone, e-mail and regular mail was overwhelming. We may have a small church but to many of these brothers and sisters we are an example and an inspiration to many. As the prayer group goes forward, my prayer will be, may the mission of 3rd. Avenue be to bringing more souls through our new doors. Mrs. Lillian Vance called to reinstate her membership and Kathy and Ed Kovacs told me they miss the church and the Good Samaritan who leaves gifts in our mail box, and there are probably others. Let us all remember that the Lord will be with this Congregation as it goes forward into its second 105 years. He is leading us in the direction that He would like us to go. As we develop our relationship with the Lord, we should strive to mature our love for our Divine Creator. As we go into the second 105th. Years of 3rd. Avenue let us prepare for the coming of God s Word as he leads us in the direction that He has chosen for us. Perhaps we may perceive the joy of something new about to burst forth in our lives. Amen. CALVIN SYNOD HERALD 7 Text: Mark 1:40-45 SPREADING THE WORD Question: In St. Matthew s gospel, in the last words of the text, Jesus offers what has come to be called the great commission. What is it Jesus says? Answer: Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to observe all I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:19-20) Question: In this story Jesus meets a leper, touches him (an unheard of thing to do), lifts him up, sends him on his way whole, instructing him to go show his healed condition to the priest and then go tell everyone, Jesus healed me. Right? Answer: No. Jesus says, See that you say nothing to anyone. Question: Do you believe the church is supposed to abide by the great commission or abide by what Jesus told the man? Answer: Preacher, don t ask us such easy questions. Story: Two friends met for golf. One said, I saw you go into the church the other day. I didn t know you were a church goer. Oh yes, replied the other. I have been a church goer for years. A funny thing, said the questioner. You re always able to talk about golf but you ve never said a word about God. Comment: It seems that it s about as hard for many of us mainline Christians to tell others about our faith as it is for many parents to talk to their children about sex. Back to the Text: The healed leper could not be quiet. It reads, He went out and began to proclaim it freely and to spread the word. He was not trying to be disobedient. But you might as well have tried to keep a faucet under pressure from spouting.. You might as well have told a first-time father not to call family and exclaim, It s a girl! or It s a boy! Comment: A Scottish minister, Thomas Chalmers, decades ago had a title for it, The Expulsive Power of a New Affection. some years ago read, In Turkey we do not try to convert Muslims to become Christians. It s up to us to discover other people s situation, history, culture and religious expressions and to respond with love, respect and integrity. Really? Cannot one share the good news of Jesus Christ with love, respect and integrity? Some six years ago two young women were taken hostage by the Taliban in Afghanistan. They were accused of teaching about Jesus. The captors eventually released them. Do you think they had been falsely accused? No! Guilty as charged. Guilty of fulfilling the great commission. A Biblical Story: In the Book of Acts we read a story from the early church. Paul and Silas come to Thessalonica and proclaimed: This Jesus is the Messiah. He is the one we announce to you. (Acts 17:3) St. Luke writes: Some in the synagogue were persuaded and so were a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women. (Acts 17:4) The story continues: A mob then dragged Jason and other believers before the city assembly and said: Those people who have been turning the world upside down have come here also. (Acts 17:6) Current Situations: A 2000 issue of Newsweek was headlined, The War on Christians. The report: In Nigeria in 2011 there were 350 churches destroyed and 510 Christians killed. In Sudan persecution and killing of Christians has gone on for decades. In Egypt, Coptic Christians making up 11% of the population, now flee their homes by the thousands to escape rape, mutilations, church burnings and murder. In Iraq half of the million Christians have fled the country since 2003. In Pakistan lives a tiny Christian minority of 2.8 million. Many live in constant fear for their lives. In Indonesia attacks of Christians and other minorities increased 40% from 2010 to 2011. Violence against Christians occurs in Iran, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia. A song from an old musical, My Fair Lady, is illustrative: I have often walked down this street before, But the pavement always stayed beneath my feet before. All at once am I several stories high, Knowing I m on the street where you live. The Bad News Report: It now appears that some significant sectors of the church have taken the words of the great commission off the wall and replaced it with what St. Mark says Jesus told the leper, Don t you dare tell anyone. Report from Turkey: A newsletter from missionaries in Turkey In summation: A terrible, murderous and under reported Christophobia is under way. The cost of spreading the Word about the Savior is very high. Consider how silent we are where it is safe to speak. How little risk we take! Christians are called to spread the Word wherever they live. Christians are not smarter, better or wiser. As the great Indonesian Christian, D. T. Niles, said, Christians are beggars telling other beggars where they can find food. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, One God, world to its end. Amen. David B. Bowman

8 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD NEW COMMITMENTS FOR THE NEW YEAR Scripture: Philippians 3:13-3:14 Well it s that time of year again when many of us make great promises to ourselves about what we are going to do in the New Year that we usually abandon about the second week in January. Today, and through this message, I want to share with you some resolutions, some commitments which I guarantee will make a radical difference in your life if you follow through on them. Here is what I want to suggest to you: if you will make four commitments that God in His Word encourages you to make, I guarantee you that the start of 2014 could become one of the most significant events in your life. New Year instead of being simply about having a few days off, if you will follow God s advice, could become a way for you the gate way to have a better life. I want to challenge you to make four new commitments for this New Year. Here they are 1: COMMIT YOURSELF TO FORGET YOUR FAILURES 2000 years ago one the first Christian leaders, Paul gave this advice Forgetting what is behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on towards the goal for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus. Phil 3:13-14 That advice from God s Word has stood the test of time. I don t know of any more relevant and practical advice for us at the start of 2014. God is here that you may not live your life imprisoned by your past. All of us have failed in some way in our lives over the last year. Probably we won t see our failures recorded for history on TV but they are recorded in our hearts and minds. For many of us our failures are painful memories. Maybe for you it is a memory of how you failed in a relationship. You made the wrong decisions, said and did the wrong things and the relationship ended. Some of you who are parents probably know that you failed your children in some way, many of us are aware that we have failed our parents and it s more than likely that many of us know that most of all we have failed ourselves in some ways. What God s Word is saying is that we must not allow ourselves to be bogged down by our past failures. That we not dwell on our past so that it stops us moving forward into the future that God has for us. I think that the start of New Year is a good time for you to rise to that challenge. To say to yourself I am going to, with help of God, forget my past. I am going to stop torturing myself about what I did or didn t do. This New Year is a good time to stop being chained to your past failures. God is saying here in His Word that he doesn t want you to go through your life branding yourself as a failure. God let His son to die on the Cross died so that he could forgive. 2: COMMIT YOURSELF TO GIVE UP YOUR GRUDGES I want you to listen to these words from the book of Colossians because in them you ll hear the second challenge I believe God wants you to rise to if you want to make 2014 a significant turning point in your life. Bear with each other and forgive each other whatever grievances you may have against one another. Frgive as the Lord forgave you Col 3:13 Did you catch that challenge? God in those words is challenging you directly and personally to give up your grudges. That is what he means when he says forgive each other whatever grievances you may have against one another. What s a grudge? A grudge is a deep ongoing resentment that we cultivate in our hearts against someone else. A grudge is an unforgiving spirit that leads to unforgiving attitudes and unforgiving actions. Now I know you know what I am talking about. Harboring a grudge is about nursing a dislike for someone. What you need to know is that grudges are dangerous because they are destructive. Let s be honest enough to admit that one of the scandals of the Church is the grudges that Christians hold against one another. Today if you know you are holding a grudge against someone then God has something to say to you. He says give it up. I want to remind you that grudges are not just destructive they are also self-destructive. When you hold a grudge against someone you will hurt yourself as much and perhaps more than you will hurt the person you are holding it against. Make no mistake about it, if you keep harboring a grudge then it will eventually destroy you, if not physically, certainly emotionally and spiritually. It will make you a bitter and twisted person. The book of Job in chap 21 describes people who Have no happiness at all, they live and die with bitter hearts. Do you really want that to be your epitaph? Do you remember that parable that Jesus told about the servant who was forgiven a huge debt by the king and then refused to forgive someone else a tiny amount? Jesus said his unforgiving spirit landed him in prison. According to God s Word the way to give up a grudge is to forgive a grievance. Notice what God is saying here. He isn t asking you to ignore whatever the person has done to you. He isn t asking you to pretend it did happen. He doesn t ask you to condone it, to pretend it didn t matter. What God asks you to do is to forgive the grievance. That means to acknowledge how wrong and painful what was done to you was but to decide to forgive person who did the wrong to you. I am absolutely certain that there are people here who need to give up their grudges and forgive the grievance they have against someone else. God says that that deep-seated resentment you have against that person has to go. What better time to make that difficult decision to forgive than the start of a new year? Now don t tell God you can t forgive, because what you really mean when you say that is that you won t forgive. If Christ can forgive you your sin despite it involving the pain of the cross

CALVIN SYNOD HERALD 9 then surely you can give up your grievance whatever the cost? The question is will you do it? 3: COMMIT YOURSELF TO RESTORE YOUR RELATION SHIPS Every time I turn on my computer a little windows pops up that asks if I want to run a check to see if my programs are all working properly. God in his word issues a very similar invitation. It is the invitation not to check to see if our computer software is working properly to but check whether our personal relationships are working properly. Here is how the Lord issues that challenge in If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone Romans 12:18 The important phrase there is, as far as it depends on you. God by using that phrase is personally challenging each one of us to do all we can to restore our relationships. The Lord wants you to do everything you can to restore any relationships that have gone wrong in your life. Some relationships might have gone wrong in your life because of what other people have done and they might well not want that relationship restored. God recognizes that. That is why he starts by saying If I ts Possible But let s be honest some of our relationships have gone wrong because of what we have done haven t they? When God s word says here as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone it is saying if you have caused a rift in a relationship then you have a responsibility to do everything you can to restore it. That everything includes the one thing we all probably find most difficult, asking for forgiveness. Am I not the only person who finds it hardest to say I am sorry to the people I am closest too? I wonder how many marriages represented here are not all what they should be or could be simply because someone won t say I was wrong, I am sorry, will you forgive me I am certain that some of us who are married need to ask forgiveness for harsh words and cutting remarks that have really wounded our partners over the years. Maybe God is saying to some of you that this change of year is the right time to restore that relationships you ruined by going and sincerely saying that you are sorry for those angry words or those selfish and unthoughtful actions. Make no mistake it will be hard to do that but one of the most significant things that you can do to mark the New Year is not set off a firework but to admit your past errors in relationships and humbly seek forgiveness from the one you have hurt. Will you rise to that challenge and make a commitment to restore your broken relationships in this new year? 4: COMMIT YOURSELF TO TURN YOUR BACK ON YOUR TRANSGRESSIONS. Christ died to set us free, the Holy Spirit has given us the power to be free. Listen to these words from Rom 6 Do not let sin control the way you live, do not give in to its lustful desires we are no longer slaves to sin Romans 6:2 That is the last challenge that I believe if you will rise to meet will make this New Year truly significant for you. When God says Do not let sin control the way you live, do not give in to its lustful desires He is issuing the challenge to turn your back on your transgressions. I had the photocopier repairman in my office the other day. He turned on the machine and it said on the display Error code He looked at and said Same old fault He then explained that each model of photo-copier usually has a particular way of going wrong that happens time and time again. That is a principle that is as true in the spiritual world as it is in the electronic world. Christian writers used to talk about something called besetting sins. What they meant by besetting sins were particulars sin that a particular Christian was prone to doing time and time again. For most of us when we are saved we give up certain sins easily but there are other things that we know are wrong that we really battle with. Those are our besetting sins. Many of us end up choosing to give into our besetting sins and end up living double lives. Maybe that is how you lived over the last year, constantly defeated by the same old sin. If you will ask for God s forgiveness for your sin and his power to resist that sin then this year can be for you a new era in your spiritual life. Don t miss that opportunity. Conclusion It all boils down to this: Will this New Year be just a calendar changing event for you or are you willing to rise to these challenges from God s word and make these commitments and so make it a life changing event? Are you willing to make these 4 commitments for 2014? Will you commit yourself to forget your failures? Will you commit yourself to give up your grudges? Will you commit yourself to restore your relationships? Will you commit yourself to turning your back on your transgressions? This New Year will really be something to celebrate if you ll make forgiveness the heart of what it s all about for you. Have the courage right here at the begining To forgive yourself and forget the past To forgive others who have hurt you and forgive whatever grievances you have To ask for forgiveness from those you have hurt and as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone To ask for God s forgiveness and No longer be a slave to sin CHANGE OF ADDRESS FORM Name... Our graduates are flourishing and here I would like to pause and remember all of you that helped our students graduate through the support of the Godparent s program. We had the small area next to our school asphalted and it will be rubber topped this spring to make a playground for the students. Those of our students who had Godparent s assigned in 2013 will write to them this Christmas, the others will be assigned at the end of January, pending the results of their midterms. We thanks all contributors to our building fund and Bela Szigethy for his most generous donation. We desperately need a student meeting/gathering center and will try to renovate the storage room in the basement. We wish all our brethren a blessed Christmas, filled with happiness and the best of health for the New Year. Many of our students come from outlying areas. We have introduced a student support system, so the boarders can afford the $800 yearly tuition. We have been very lucky in that the City supported a grant proposal to the EU and all of our buildings are being renovated. One building has been completed to date and we are hoping the rest will be ready by the start of the 2014 school year. Az új esztendő úgy tűnik nehéz lesz országunk és a gyülekezetünk életében. Pénzügyi és gazdasági krízis idejében élünk. Sokan félnek és borúlátók a jövendőnkkel kapcsolatosan. A 2014 év kezdetén mi Illés próféta életútjára figyelünk, és arra, hogy vele mit tett az Isten, amint az 1. Királyok könyvében olvasható. Isten Illést prófétának hívta és választotta el, hogy megismerje az Isten akaratát és ismerté tegye a nép közösségében, hogy királyok és uralkodók és a nép megismerje az Urat, csodálatos dolgait és kijelentéseit. Csodatevő erők birtokosává lett Illés, és hit és engedelmesség által győzedelmessé, Baál kánaánit pogány istenség prófétáival szemben. Illés hirdette, hogy Baál bálvány és a tisztelői bálványimádók. A Karmel hegyén az Isten megdicsőítette magát és győztessé tette Illést a Baál prófétáival szemben. "És amikor eljött az esteli áldozás ideje, oda lépett Illés próféta, és monda: Óh, Uram, Ábrahámnak, Izsáknak és Izráelnek Istene, hadd ismerjék meg e mai napon, hogy te vagy az Isten az Izráelben, és hogy én a te szolgád vagyok, és hogy mindezeket a te parancsolatodból cselekedtem. Hallgass meg engem, Uram, hallgass meg engem, hogy tudja meg e nép, hogy te, az Úr vagy az Isten, és te fordítod vissza az ő szívüket! Akkor alászáll az Úr tüze, és megemészté az égőáldozatot, a fát, a köveket és a port, és felnyalta a vizet, a mely az árokban volt. Mikor ezt látta az egész sokaság, arcra borult, és monda: Az Úr az Isten! Az Úr az Isten!" 1Királyok 18:36-39 Meglepő, hogy ezt a győzelmet követően Illés a félelem mélységébe süllyedt. Akháb király elmondta gonosz feleségének Jezábelnek, hogy mi történt a Kármel hegyén. Jezábel királyné a kanaánita pogány istenekre megesküdött, hogy megöli Illést. És Illés megijedt a gonosz asszony fenyegetésétől elfutott a pusztába, leült egy fenyőfa alá, azért és imádkozott, hogy Isten vegye el az ő életét. Hogyan történhetett ez? Némely magyarázók szerint a próféta hirtelen érzelmi változásának oka az izraeli ember sajátos lelkiségében van. Kedélyét a szenvedélyesség és a csüggedés határozzák meg. Itt viszont egy mélységes megfáradás, megerőtlenedés állapotába került Illés, hasonlóan, mint Mózes, Jeremiás és Jób a maguk idejében. Krisztus is megjárta ezt a mélységet. A megfáradás és elbizonytalanodás állapotában az ember egyedül kíván lenni, esetenként halálvágya lesz. És lefeküvék és elaluvék a fenyőfa alatt. "És ímé angyal illetté őt, és monda néki: Kelj fel, egyél. És az Úr angyala eljött másodszor is és megilletté őt, és monda: Kelj fel, egyél; mert erőd felett való utad van. És ő felkelt, és evett és ivott; és méne annak az ételnek erejével negyven nap és negyven éjjel egész az Isten hegyéig, Hórebig" 1 Királyok 19:5, 7-8 Hogyan nyerjük vissza lelki és testi erőnket az úton járásra és a szolgálatra? Sokan félnek a 2014 év várható nehézségeitől és kétségbeesnek. Aggódnak munkájukért, jövedelmükért, életükért, egészségükért és valójában mindenért. Gyülekezeteinknek a Kálvin Egyházkerületben kevés támogatója van, és egyre kevesebb a hűséges, istentisztelő, hitéhez és az egyházához is ragaszkodó ember. Isten tudja mindezeket. Illésnek ételt, italt, adott az angyal, és szólt és szól nekünk is: "Erőd felett való utad van." Az Úrvacsora jegyeiben ad lelki eledelt az Úr. A Keresztség Sákramentumának meghagyásakor ígérte: "és ímé én ti veletek vagyok minden napon a világ végezetéig. Ámen! János ev. 28:20" 2014-ben erőnk felett való utunk van de az Úr erőnk felett megáldhatja. Az utat csak Istennel járva tudjuk sikeresen megtenni. Isten a Jézus Krisztusban van velünk. Az Ő neve az Emmanuel Ő által van velünk az Isten. Jézus, aki győzedelmes volt a démoni erőkön és a halál rettentése felett is. Aki feltámadott és életet ígér az Őt követőknek. Keljünk fel a hitetlenség és félelem állapotából és kövessük Őt aki "Út, Igazság és az Élet" a mi Urunk Jézus Krisztust. Ámen. Tájékoztatom önöket, hogy 2014 január 20.-án New Yorkban a Carnegie Hall Stern Auditóriumában Karl Jenkins, a világhírű walesi zeneszerző 70. születésnapján ünnepi koncertet rendez a Distinguished Concert International New York, a zeneszerző személyes jelenlétével. A műsoron, más darabok mellett, a szerző kérésére bemutatják A walesi bárdok alcím: A civil kurázsi dicsérete Ín memoriam Arany János című zeneművet is, amelynek ez az előadás lesz a premierje az Egyesült Államokban. A koncert fővédnöke Őfelsége Wales Hercege, a darab világpremierjét pedig 2011 júniusában tartották Budapesten, a Művészetek Palotájában. A Carnegie Hall koncertjén fellépő 286 tagú nemzetközi kórus egy jó része, mintegy nyolcvan fő várhatóan Magyarországról érkezik, Dunaújvárosból. A walesi bárdok balladát feldolgozó zenemű bemutatása különleges lehetőséget ad arra is, hogy Magyarország irodalmát, történelmét közelebb hozza az amerikai közönséghez. 14 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD CALVIN SYNOD ISKOLA ALAP Az iskolánk éli a mindennapi életét, rengeteg rendezvénynyel, órán kívüli tevékenységgel (kórus, reneszánsz táncegyüttes és zenekar, táncház, cserkészet, irodalmi és tudományos önképzőkör), melyeket kollégáim azért szerveznek önzetlenül és szabadidejükben a diákjaink számára, hogy közösségélményüket a MI közösségünkön belül éljék meg diákjaink és ezáltal nagyobb valószínűséggel maradjanak meg erdélyi magyar közösségünk aktív tagjaként majd felnőttként is. Ugyanis a Bethlen Gábor Kollégium hivatása a magas szintű tudás biztosítása mellett a közösségépítés is, mely hisszük, hogy kihatással lesz teljes erdélyi magyar társadalmunkra is, amennyiben diákjainkat felnőtté válásuk során ilyen értékekkel ruházzuk fel. Testvéri szeretettel és tisztelettel, Szőcs Ildikó, igazgató A nagyenyedi Bethlen Gábor Kollégium diákjai és munkaközössége nevében Kolozsvári hírek: Kedves Támogatóink, Ha most a Kolozs vári Református Kollégiumban lennének diákok, akik épp a kórushoz tartoznának, igen sokszor kerülne sor fellépésre: Dec 8-án Debrecenben, a Nagy Templomban, másnap a teológián, aztán 14/én a Farkas utcai templomban, 18-án az ortodox testvérekkel közös koncert, 20-án pedig indulnának, haza vakációra. Ilyen a készülődés a Református Kollégiumba, hogy mindenhová vigyék énekszóval karácsony hírét. Folytatom tovább dr. Székely Árpád, igazgató, kis beszámolójával: Az iskoláról a következőket szeretném elmondani és kérlek először is tolmácsold minden kedves barátunknak, testvérünknek a köszönetünket és hálánkat. Amikor elolvastam az adományokról szóló levelet a kollégáknak és a diá koknak nagyon megörültek. Nagy segítség ez nagyon soknak. Hála Istennek nagyon jól működik az óvoda az új csoportban is sokan vannak és nagyon ügyes óvó nénik jöttek, mindkettő volt növendékünk. Az előkészítő osztálytól a 8-ikig jól megy az általános iskola is. Az érettségi eredményeink jók voltak és ez sokat számít, mert az ősszel indult 2 osztály 9-be betelt, az egyik osztályban maximálisan 30-an vannak. Ez bizonyítja azt, hogy az iskola hírneve jó. És ezt bizonyítják a már végzett diákok is, akik kitűnően megállják a helyüket. Akik közül sokan nektek, amerikai magyar testvéreinknek köszönhetik, hogy tanulhattak. Az épületünk melletti kis kertet sikerült lebetonozni és tavasszal teszünk rá gumiszőnyeget. Most már kerítjük be hálóval, így lesz egy kis sportpálya a diákoknak. Az ösztöndíjakat igyekszünk kiosztani minél hamarabb, de már szóltunk a diákoknak, hogy akik a tavaly kaptak és az idén is küldtek nekik már írjanak karácsonyra. Nagyon megörültek a jó hírnek, hogy az iskolaépítkezésre szánt adományokból lesz a diákoknak pincehelyiségben szoba, mert kell egy ilyen szabad idő központ is. Reméljük sikerül kialakítani. Kívánunk minden kedves testvérünknek áldott, boldog karácsonyt és egészségben eltöltött boldog újesztendőt. Köszönettel, hálával és szeretettel, a Kollégium közössége nevében, Székely Árpád igazgató. Hírek Nagyenyedről: A nagyenyedi Bethlen Gábor Kollé giumban a tanévet maximális osztálylétszámmal kezdtük. Ebből kifolyólag a diáklétszám nőtt a kollégiumban, ami nagy örömmel töltött el bennünket. A létszám emelkedése a támogatási rendszerünknek is köszönhető. Azon diákok, akik a szórványból származnak, a támogatási rendszer hiányában nem folytathatnák a tanulmányaikat a Bethlen Gábor Kollégiumban, mert szüleik nem engedhetnék meg maguknak a bentlakási költségek kifizetését, mely egy tanévre 800 USD-t jelent. A kollégium diáksága, tantestülete hatalmas nagy türelemmel viseli el az építőtelepet az iskolánkban. Folyamatban van az Európai Uniós alapokból zajló felújítási munkálat, mely az iskolánk teljes felújítását célozta meg. Egy épületet már birtokba vettünk és reményeink szerint 2014 végére sikerül befejezni a felújítási munkálatokat. Ez egy csoda az iskolánk életében, melyre az Erdélyi Református Egyházkerület és a Nagyenyed Városi Önkormányzat közötti példaértékű együttműködés révén került sor. Mindkettő közösség, mindkettő nevel, mindkettő tanít csak mindezt a felekezeti iskola Isten jelenlétében, Isten iránti engedelmességben, az Ő áldása által próbálja tenni. Ugyanazok a tanárok, ugyanazok a gyerekek, csak más légkörben. És ettől a légkörtől egy kicsit másként viselkedik, másként beszél, másként cselekszik a gyermek. 2013 Gyűjtés beszámoló: 1991-ben jelölte ki a Calvin Synod az Erdélyi Református iskolákat, mint misszió. Milyen elárvult körülmények közt kezdték az első megengedett osztályokat Kolozsváron. Még az elején 4 tanteremben tanítottak egy ipari iskolában, a diákok helybeli családoknál szálltak meg. Lassan kiterjedt missziónk és felkarolta a diakonissza építését Kolozsváron (még ma is ott van a bentlakás) és Marosvásárhelyen, építkezési segélyt nyújtott 2002-ben mikor visszakapta az egyház a Kolozsvári Kollégium ó-épületét, a segély kiterjedt Székelyudvarhelyre és Nagyenyedre. Ebben az évben sikerült elküldenünk $19,105 a Kolozsvári Kollégium felújítására, $37,215 a kereszt szülői akcióra, $37,400 Székelyudvarhelyre, $2,750 a Bolyai Ref. Kollégium szegény diákjai részére, és $25,000 a Bethlen Gábor Kollégiumhoz. Az évek hosszú során az átküldött segély meghaladta a másfél millió dollárt! Isten áldja meg minden adakozónk támogatását. CALVIN SYNOD HERALD A JÓ PÁSZTOR (Újév) Az Úr az én pásztorom. Zsoltár 25:1 Az év első napja olyan nap, mint a többi, mégis különös jelentőséget ad neki az, hogy e napon az Örökkévalóság ablaka kitárul előttünk. Úgy fogadjuk ezt az évet, mint egy új reggelt. Frissen, üdén, bizakodva indulunk neki az új életnek. Milyen jó, hogy az Isten olyan hosszútűrő s atyai bizalommal tovább foglalkozik velünk. Új, meg új lehetőséget nyújt nekünk arra, hogy elvégezhessük életünk legnagyobb feladatát: ajkunkkal és cselekedeteinkkel dicsérjük Őt. Köszönjük Istennek, hogy új alkalmak hosszú sorát nyújtja még felénk, amelyekben mindig találkozhatunk vele, s helyrepótolhatjuk, amit elmulasztottunk és megcselekedhetjük, amire elhívattattunk. E napon érezzük át megint teljes örömmel és mély hálával, hogy az Úr a mi pásztorunk. Hányszor elfelejtkezünk erről és hányszor elfordítottuk tekintetünket róla, de Ő sohasem felejtkezett el rólunk és tekintete szüntelenül rajtunk nyugodott. Milyen jól esik Őt közelünkben tudnunk! Örök szeretetének drága tárgyai vagyunk, nem magunkért, hanem, Ő érette, s azért az árért, amelyet Szent Fia fizetett érettünk. Véghetetlen bölcsessége titokzatos tanácsban határoz legfőbb javunk felől és megszabja, ami nekünk javunkra válik: mennyi értelem, mennyi gond, mennyi isteni találékonyság foglaltatik e legfőbb bölcsességű pásztornak velünk való törődésében! És mindenhatósága, amelyik egyetlen mozdulással világokat teremt és napok fáklyáit oltja ki, milyen biztosan, pontosan és dicsőségesen viszi végbe mindazt, ami az Ő hű pásztori gondjából következik mi reánk. Óh én lelkem, örülj és örvendezz, hogy ilyen pásztorod, atyád és gondviselőd van! Énekeld el neki ez újév hajnalán:,,kicsodám van nekem az egekben? Náladnál egyébben nem gyönyörködöm e földön. Ha elfogyatkozik is testem és szívem, szívemnek kősziklája és az én örökségem Te vagy óh Isten mindörökké. (Zsolt. 73:25-26) * Köszönöm Neked, én Uram és én Istenem, hogy erre a napra felvirrasztottál. Köszönöm, hogy napjaimhoz napokat adsz még, s abban drága alkalmakat arra, hogy megtérjek és éljek. Azért felajánlom Te Néked ezt az esztendőt, amit ingyen kegyelmednek tetszett én reám elhozni. Ígérem előtted nagy fogadással, hogy ez új évben nevedet jobban megszentelem, s magamat teljesebben állítom oda Te Néked tetsző kedves áldozatul. Buzgóbb leszek a Te imádásodban, hívebb szent akaratod teljesítésében, szorgalmatosabb a jó cselekedetekben, tűrőbb a szomorúságban és örvendezőbb a reménységben. De mit érne minden fogadásom és elszánásom, ha Te nem segítenél óh örök jóság és örök segedelem! Azért könyörögve kérem számomra ez évben a Te Szent Lelked ajándékait. Neveld az én hitemet, gyújtsd fel az én szeretetemet, erősítsd meg az én reménységemet. Világosítsd meg az én elmémet, hogy akaratodat megismerjem. Tedd fogékonnyá szívemet, hogy akaratodnak engedelmeskedjem és vidd végbe örök végzésedet velem, ellenem és érettem. Segíts meg, hogy szolgáljak azoknak, akik én reám bízottak. CALVIN SYNOD HERALD 17 Sipos Domokos VAJÚDÓ IDŐK KÜSZÖBÉN Ezernégyszázharminhét március harmadik napján estefelé egy hajlott hátú férfiember ment a Küküllő menti Bonyha felé vezető úton. Süvegje félrekonyult a sűrűn és megszakítás nélkül hulló esőtől. sarui bocskorszerű, durvabőr tákolmányok, cuppogva nyomták szét léptei alól a mély, híg sarat. Feketésszürke kurta zekéje, szűk nadrágja foltozott, sáros és piszkos volt. Dorongnak beillő. hatalmas tölgyhusángot húzott maga után. Messziről jövő, fáradt embernek látszott, s ruházatáról nehezen lehetett megmondani, hogy pór-e vagy koldus-nemes. A Küküllő partjára ért, s fejét előszegve kereste a gázlót. A folyópart agyagos iszappal kevert homokja lucskosan süppedezett a lábai alatt, napok óta nem jártak erre, mert sehol lábnyom, kerékvágás nem hasította fel a partot. De a túlsó oldalon, a réten, melynek az ősszel csonkig legelt füve milliónyi apró szálacskából már szőtte tavaszi szőnyegét, feketére taposott csapás húzódott a falu felé. Szembekerült ezzel a csapással, s a vizet kezdte kémlelni. A folyócska sárgás sodra egy helyen apró tarajú hullámoktól borzalmasan iramlott lefelé. A férfi itt belelábolt a vízbe. Lépett néhányat, botját egy-két lépésre mindig maga előtt jártatva. Mikor a másik partra ért, alig combig volt vizes, pedig a környező dombokról esőtől duzzadt patakocskák agyagos vize tavaszi nekiáradással töltötte meg a Küküllő medrét. A réten, a falu fölött s a környező hegyekben szürkésfehér párapászmákat lengetett ide-oda a szél, az égbolt pedig mozdulatlanul gömbölyödött minden. A hegyektől zárt kis sík, leborítva az éggel, terhes volt az életszagtól, s feszültségtől vemhes. A kipattanni akaró élet zuhogott a mozdulatlanság alatt. Várta az ember, hogy a világ megcsorduljon, mint a csecsemőszájra érett anyamell. A férfi sietve csapott át a réten. Mikor a házak közelébe ért, egy törpe, hosszú szőrű, fehér kutya eléje rohant, s mérgesen ugatva szaladt előtte, hírül adva érkezését. A kerítés nélküli udvarokról, nyomorúságos fészerek mögül ki-kiiramlott egy-egy sovány eb, füstös pitvarajtókon kikukkantott egy-egy fej, de senki sem volt kíváncsi a tovaléptető alakra, aki a falu végén emelkedő domb előtt állott meg. Felnézett a torony nélküli kis templomra, amely előtt a karcsú harangláb álldogált, mint éjszakai vigiliára kiállított strázsa. A domb nyugati lábánál, a plébánia piciny ablakán át gyenge világosság szűrődött ki. A déli oldalon magas épületek nehéz síkjai dűltek bele a sövény mögül, borjúbőgés görgött át a levegőn, s hirtelen egyik fal lángtól veresre festve ijesztette tova a templom keresztjén gubbasztó kuvikot. A jövevény odapillantott, aztán a sövényhez lépett, megkereste a kaput, meglökte vállával de az belül farúddal volt a sövényhez reteszelve, s nem engedett. A reccsenésre két nagy eb rohant a kerítéshez harsogó ugatással, s fejét lesunyva igyekezett a kapu alatti nyíláson elkapni a váratlan vendég szagát. Aztán léptek hallatszottak, valaki félrehúzta a reteszt, s kinyitotta a kaput. Két öregember állott szemben egymással, A kapunyitó, köpcös, lengő fehér szakállú férfi felnézett a jövevény arcába, aztán a meglepetés, az öröm, a megilletődés és a mély tisztelet rohant át hanyatt-homlok ráncos képén. A másik még mindig nem mozdult. Az ajtón kicsapó hatalmas fénytömeg valósággal koppanva zuhogott kőkemény arcára. Széles és roppant magas homloka mint a sima várfal verte vissza a fényt, árnyékot borított két mélyen ülő nagy szemére, mely alatt sötét ráncok húzódtak a hajlott, nagy és éles orr felé. Szürke, lelógó bajusza eltakarta száját, csupasz arcából mint két megvilágított bástya emelkedett ki a pofacsont, s mint törhetetlen falanx nyomult előre a nagy csontú, kérlelhetetlen áll. A házigazda izgalomtól lefojtott hangon súgta feléje: Újlaki Bálint! Legyen áldott a hatalmas Isten, ki téged idehozott. atyám! És legyenek áldottak az ő igaz gyermekei dörmögte a másik, s belépett a kapun. A gazda megfogta kezét, és magával vonta az udvaron át. A ház nyitott ajtaján látni lehetett az óriási, agyagból rakott kemence tüzét. Lábnyi fahasábok égtek a rengeteg parázson, méteres lángot vetve, végük kiállott a tűzhely párkányára. Egy tízesztendős forma fiúgyermek ült ott, s olykor-olykor beljebb tolta őket. Az óriási, nyitott kéményben fekete-vörös kavargással forgott kifelé a füst. A lángok teljes világossággal öntötték tele a nagy szobát, lobogásukkal különös színekkel borítva el itt-ott füstös, csupasz falakat. Bútor alig volt a szobában, mely a család nappali tartózkodási helyéül szolgált, az asztalon cseréptányérok, fa ivókupák. A ledöngölt agyagföldön festetlen padok álltak a fal mellett, bőrök és gyapjútakarók rajtuk, középen óriási asztal állott, mellette cikornyásra faragott hátú székek. A házigazda és vendége beléptek a nyitott ajtón. Újlaki megállott a küszöb mellett, s szembefordult a bent ülőkkel. Hatalmas alakja kiegyenesedett, hosszú ősz hajtól környezett boltozatos feje, magasan a szemöldöke felett, a falat érte, kitárta két karját, és dörgő, mély hangon megszólalt: Békessége legyen a ti lelketeknek! Közeleg immár a mennyeknek országa! A háznép felállott, és szó nélkül nézte őt. Három férfi volt még a szobában. Az ősz házigazdának, budai Nagy Balázsnak veje és két fia. Ketten negyvenesztendősök, harcsabajszúak, derék nagy emberek, derekukban megroskadva, az áhítat terhétől megborzadt fejjel álltak. Köztük, fejét felszegve, sóvár figyelemmel meredt előre a ház büszkesége: budai Nagy Antal, Csáki László erdélyi vajda nemes hadnagya. A gazda súgott valamit az asszonyoknak. Azok kivitték a gyermekeket, s maguk is távoztak a szobából. Később böjti ételeket hoztak az asztalra, bort, és magukra hagyták a férfiakat. Azok behúzták az ajtót. s az asztal köré ültek. Senki sem nyúlt az ételhez. A háziak várták, hogy Újlaki szóljon, az nagy szemöldökei alól hol a tűzbe nézett, hol a fiatal Nagy Antal arcát kémlelte. Nagy Balázs hozzá fordult: Fáradt vagy, atyám? Nem fáradnak el, akiket az Úr vezet felelte Újlaki. Megint kongó nagy csend. Csak a parázsra zuhanó, megszenesedett fahasábok ütöttek zajt, mikor a tűz boghoz ért, a fa nyöszörgött, vinnyogott, amíg a láng kihevítette belőle a lelket. A három idősebb borzongva és majdnem önkívületben nézett a pap lábai elé, mintha várták volna, hogy megnyíljék a föld, s kicsapjanak a pokol kénköves lángjai. A hadnagy arcán inkább türelmetlenség látszott. Egyik sárga csizmás lábát előrenyújtotta, s vassarkantyújával felkarcolta a földet. Újlaki elvégezte a beszédjét, aztán rövid imát mondott, a kenyér után nyúlt, és annyi darabocskát tört belőle, ahányan voltak. A házigazda kiment, s kis idő múlva visszatért.
