Franciscan Church /Kárpátia Restaurant Ferenciek téri templom /Kárpátia étterem The present baroque church is a real mystery, since the architect of the building is still unknown. The building shows the influence of Italian Baroque instead of the Austrian version, which was more common in the country. The relief on the left side wall of the church commemorates the Great Flood of the river Danube in 1838. The relief is dedicated to count Miklós Wesselényi, a real Hungarian superhero. He was the Hero of the Flood with a really simple super power: saving people by his boat from drowning in the river. The Kárpátia is a 140-year-old restaurant, which started to operate in the late 19th century and became popular among the citizens of Pest very soon. The restaurant was decorated in the 1920 s by different famous Hungarian artists (frescoes, windows and furniture). Now there are 6 rooms of the restaurant and in the evenings it awaits the hungry guests with nice food, traditional gypsy music as well as classical and jazz pieces among the hits and musical songs. E templom a rejtélyek tárháza: mivel a mai napig ismeretlen az építésze, nem tudhatjuk, miért láthatóak rajta az olasz barokk hatásai, holott Magyarországon sokkal inkább az itáliai barokk volt a jellemző ebben az időszakban. Az épület bal oldalán látható emléktábla Wesselényi Miklóst, az árvízi hajóst méltatja, aki igazi magyar szuperhősként viselkedett, amikor az 1838-as árvíz során fáradhatatlanul segített a bajbajutottak mentésében. A Ferenciek téri templom és az ELTE Könyvtár közt elhelyezkedő Kárpátia étterem a 19. században nyitotta meg kapuit, így több mint 140 éves múlttal büszkélkedhet. Jelenleg 6 teremmel üzemel, melyben a hagyományos cigányzenén túl klasszikus- és jazzmuzsikával (meg persze finom étkekkel) várják az éhes vendégeket.
Library of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE)/Central Café ELTE Könyvtár /Centrál Kávéház This is the first university library of the country which has been operating continually since the year of the foundation. In the middle of the 19th century the Library of ELTE was the 5th biggest library of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy with its 94 636 books. Now this is the 3rd biggest one of the capital with more than 1,6 million books and other documents (codices, maps, warrants, etc.). The Central Café is one of the few traditional grand cafés of Budapest which once were so common in the city. During the late 1800s and early 1900s this was a hub of intellectual and literary life. Men of words, poets, writers were seated on a special gallery so that ordinary mortals could watch them as they worked, like so many species in a celebrity zoo. After the 1950 s, a university club (Eötvös Club) was operating here, which was a place of freedom and tolerance. This was the only university club where guys with long hair and blue jeans were also let in. Az ország első egyetemi könyvtára megnyitása óta folyamatosan üzemel. A 19. században az ELTE Könyvtára a maga 94 636 kötetével még a Monarchia 5. legnagyobb könyvtára volt. Mára csupán a harmadik helyen áll a Budapesti könyvtárak között 1,6 milliós gyűjteménnyel rendelkezik, melyben a könyvek mellett kódexek, térképek és más okiratok is találhatóak. A Centrál Kávéház egyike a kevés megmaradt régi vágású nagy kávézónak, melyek oly nagy népszerűségnek örvendtek a 18 19. században. Az 50-es évektől egy egyetemi klub, az Eötvös Klub működött az épületben, mely a szabadság és a tolerancia földje volt. Ez volt az egyetlen egyetemi szórakozóhely, ahova a hosszú hajú, farmeres fiúk is beléphettek.
Klotild palaces Matild /Former Casino of the Officers Klotild paloták Matild /Volt Magyar Királyi Tiszti Kaszinó The urban mouth knows the Klotild palaces as Klotild (on the right hand side) and Matild (on the left). According to a legend, the contractor of the 2 palaces named them after his daughters, in order not to mix them with each other while delivering materials to the construction site. The truth is that Maria Klotild was the name of the Austrian Princess who owned the site and ordered the constructions. The building Matild just got her name from the citizens of Budapest, most likely because of the similar sounding. These two palaces are almost mirror images of each other and were both designed in Spanish-baroque style. They both act like the gates of Pest and as the guards of Elisabeth Bridge. In 1827 István Széchenyi invited 46 people to the Vogel-house to found a casino where smart men from different classes could talk in Hungarian about important topics and problems of the country. With the Casino of Pest Széchenyi wanted to have the Hungarian version of the British club life, what he could explore very well during his trips to the western part of the European continent as a young nobleman. A pesti népnyelv csak Klotildként (jobbra) és Matildként (balra) ismeri a két palotát, melyek a legenda szerint építőjüktől kapták a nevüket; a mester két lányáról nevezte el a két, egyidejűleg épülő palotát, hogy az építkezésnél mindig egyértelmű legyen, hogy melyik helyszínre kell szállítani az építőanyagokat. Sajnos a szomorú igazság az, hogy e legenda nem igaz; az épületek nevüket tulajdonosnőjükről, az osztrák Klotild Mária főhercegnéről kapták. Matildot később a pesti lakosok keresztelték el, valószínűleg a Klotildra rímelve csupán. 1827-ben Széchenyi István 46 férfit invitált meg a Vogel-házba, hogy a különböző társadalmi osztályokból érkező okos emberek az országot érintő fontos kérdésekről értekezzenek. A Pesti Kaszinó létrehozásával a hagyományos brit klubéletet szerette volna hazánkban is meghonosítani, melyet nyugati utazásai során oly alaposan megismerhetett.
Downtown Parish Church Nagyboldogasszony Főplébánia Welcome to the oldest building of Pest! The construction was ordered by St. Stephen, the first Hungarian king, and most probably the stones of Contra-Aquincum were used as construction material. The church, by its Methuselah s age, bears several different characteristics, for example during the Turkish occupation like many other churches in the country it was transformed into a mosque. According to common urban legend, the church was moved from its original place in order to accommodate the construction of the Elisabeth bridge. Some people are convinced that this is true, some say it s a humbug... Next to the church you can find an organized but natural-looking garden which recreate the courtyard of medieval churches. At the entrance two statues welcome people; St. Jadwiga and St. Kinga are inviting you to the peaceful place. On the Eastern side of the church you can find a statue for St. Florian, wich was erected in 1723 to prevent fires. Légy üdvözölve Pest legrégebbi épületénél! A templom építését még Szent István rendelte el, az építőköveket hozzá valószínűleg a Contra-Aquincum szolgáltatta. A matuzsálemi templom korából adódóan különböző stílusokat vonultat fel például a török idők alatt a legtöbb templomhoz hasonlóan ez is mecsetként működött. A legnépszerűbb városi legenda szerint a templom eredetileg más helyen állt, és az Erzsébet-híd építése miatt kellett áthelyezni. Egyesek esküsznek rá, hogy a történet igaz, mások szerint mese habbal... A templom mellett egy rendezett, ám mégis természetes hatású kertet találsz, mely a középkori templomkerteket idézi vissza. A bejáratnál két szobor üdvözli a látogatókat; Szent Hedvig (Jadwiga) és Szent Kinga hívogatnak, hogy lépj be e békés helyre. A templom keleti oldalán Szent Flórián szobrát találod, melyet 1723-ban emeltek, hogy a tűzvésztől óvjon.
The ruins of Contra-Aquincum /Petőfi statue/orthodox Church Contra- Aquincum romjai /Petőfi Sándor szobra Under the glass this site holds the remains of an ancient Roman fortress which served from the 3rd century as an outpost of the nearby town of Aquincum. Make sure you look out for the line of the Danube carved in the stone pavement, with Roman fortresses alongside. This line is part of the 2010-2011 renovation project, and shows all those fortresses which once kept the Romans enemies away from Pannonia. The statue of Sándor Petőfi shows us one of the main characters of the revolution and freedom fight for our independence in 1848/1849. The statue depicts the famous poet at the age of 25 reciting his patriotic poem, the Nemzeti Dal (National Song) wich inspired the revolution as well. In 1956 Hungarians started another revolution against the Soviet occupation of the country. The university students of the city held a peaceful demonstration on 23rd October, 1956 at this statue, where a famous actor of the time, Imre Sinkovits recited the poem of Petőfi, the National Song. This way the figure of Petőfi and his most famous poem connects two centuries and two different revolutions of Hungary with each other. Az üvegtáblák alatt egy ókori, római erőd maradványait láthatod, mely a 3. századtól a közeli Aquincum előőrseként működött. Érdemes végigsétálni a kőbe vésett vonal mentén is, mely a Dunát és a folyómenti erődök elhelyezkedését mutatja be. Így pár perc alatt bejárhatjuk a Római Birodalom területének jelentős részét. Petőfi Sándor szobra elé érkezve emlékezzünk meg arról, hogy Nemzeti Dala nem csupán 1848-ban indított el forradalmi változásokat, de később az októberi ifjak lelkét is feltüzelte; 1956 október 23-án itt szavalta el Sinkovics Imre a Nemzeti dalt. Petőfi és leghíresebb verse így a századokon átívelve kötötte össze a változásra vágyó fiatalok lelkét és két forradalom elindítójává is vált.
Mariott hotel Mariott hotel This hotel was constructed in 1969, after the communist regime wisely realized that the rapidly growing tourism needed an infrastructure. The building is a typical example of its time: massive and functional. The designers focused more on the panorama and didn t care about the back of the building which would beat any site of a George Orwell novel. Like in many other hotels of the time, this hotel was an example that the regime just worked fine: some of the rooms were bugged in. Secret agents monitored the questionable guests and of course there was a dollar shop inside the hotel. Dollar shops were special shops created in the mid-sixties in order to motivate Hungarian diplomats to spend their foreign currency in Hungary. Later, all of those, who legally owned foreign currency, could spend their money here. Compared to the supply of an average supermarket, these shops were the land of plenty. Such luxury products like Marlboro cigarettes, canned beer, deodorant, tic-tac, music cassettes, Adidas trousers, Lego and Barbie dolls could be found here. A 60-as évekre a kormány felismerte, hogy a turizmus növekedésével a megfelelő infrastruktúrára is szükség van. Ebben a szellemben épült 1969-ben a Mariott hotel, mely korának tipikus példája; a masszív és funkcionális épület a dunai panoráma szépségére fókuszál, míg a hátsó homlokzat bármely orwell-i helyszínnel felveheti a versenyt. Sok más hotelhez hasonlóan a Mariott működése is megfelelt a kor kívánalmainak. Hűen szolgálta a rendszert bepoloskázott szobáival és titkosügynökeivel, akik a kiemelt vendégeket tartották szemmel. A hotelben természetesen dollárbolt is üzemelt, melyben kezdetben csak a magyar diplomaták, később viszont bárki beválthatta értékes valutáját. Olyan luxustermékeket lehetett itt kapni, mint például a Marlboro cigaretták, dobozos sörök, dezodorok, tic-tac, magnókazetták, később pedig Adidas melegítők, sőt, LEGO és Barbie babák is!
Metal courtyard/mcdonald s Vasudvar/McDonald s The sign has been removed, but this site is still the so-called Vasudvar (Metal Courtyard) which was a huge metal warehouse in the 19th century. The atrium of the new commercial and hotel center accurately preserves the metal courtyard s beautiful glass hall. Although the panorama of the Danube can only be enjoyed from the 9th and 10th floor, the hotel in this complex is a one of its kind accommodation. It is a mixture of a boarding house and a luxurious hotel in the middle of the city. This early 20th century building on the other side gave home to the first McDonald s restaurant behind the iron curtain. This was the first Western-type fast food restaurant opened in Hungary on the 29th of April 1988 at 9am, but early birds started to queue from 6am. Locals were queuing for hamburgers just like they did for bananas a few years back. The queue was more than 100 meters long. A feliratot már eltávolították, de ez az udvar rejti az egykori Vasudvart, mely egy hatalmas vaskereskedés volt a 19. században. A jelenlegi szállodai-kereskedelmi központ átriuma megőrizte az egykori üvegtetős acélszerkezetet. Bár a dunai panorámát csak a kilencedik és tizedik emeletről élvezhetik a vendégek, a komplexum egésze figyelemreméltó szálláshely; érdekes keveréke a panziónak és a város szívében elhelyezkedő luxushotelnek. A másik oldalon látható 20. századi épület adott otthont a keleti blokk első McDonald s éttermének, mely egyben az első amerikai típusú gyorsétterem is volt Magyarországon. 1988 április 29-én, reggel 9 órakor nyitotta meg kapuit, de a hamburgerre éhes magyarok már hajnali 6 órától sorban álltak, ahogy egy pár évvel korábban még banánért tették ugyanezt. A sor több mint 100 méter hosszú volt.
Péterffy palace/100 years old Restaurant/Haris alley Péterffy-palota /100 éves étterem/haris köz It is hard to believe that this little house is a palace, because it appears even smaller since it lies below the current street level. When Pest was still enclosed by walls, all houses were like this size or even smaller. The designer (András Mayerhoffer) was a local stonemason who designed for the Péterffy and the Grassalkovics families as well, two wealthy Hungarian families. Back on the 19th century this was like working for the Montague and for the Capulet family in the same time. The Péterffy palace is one of the few baroque civil buildings which survived the great flood of 1838; on the side of the house there is a water level marker. The restaurant in the building proudly wears the name 100 years old restaurant since it was first opened in 1831. This quiet pedestrian street the Haris alley was beloved because of its oriental atmosphere and rumored because of a double murder, committed in 1885. The Hungarian Jack the ripper was arrested two days after the crime, but the incident started a whole series of debates about topics like Budapest as a metropolis, women, crime and mental disorders. Nehéz elhinni, hogy ez a kis ház valóban palota, hiszen alacsonyabban helyezkedik el az utca jelenlegi szintjénél, így még kisebbnek látszik. Amikor Pestet városfal vette körbe, akkor ez a ház is átlagos méretűnek számított. Tervezője, Mayerhoffer András egy helyi kőfaragó volt, aki a Péterffy és a Grassalkovics családnak két, korabeli nemes dinasztiának is dolgozott. Ez a 19. században olyan volt, mintha egyidejűleg teljesítette volna a Montague-k és a Capulet-ek megrendeléseit. A Péterffy palota azon kevés barokk magánépületek közé tartozik, melyek túlélték az 1838-as nagy árvizet; ennek szintjéről a ház oldalán emléktábla árulkodik. A benne található étterem joggal viseli a százéves nevet, hiszen 1831-ben nyitotta meg először kapuit. A csendes sétálóutca a közelben a Haris köz egyaránt volt kedvelt keleties hangulata és rettegett az itt elkövetett kettős gyilkosság miatt; 1885-ben a magyar Hasfelmetsző Jack tevékenysége során (akit két nappal a gyilkosság után le is tartóztattak) cikksorozat indult a pesti újságokban, mely a metropolis fertőjéről, a nők kiszolgáltatott helyzetéről és a különböző mentális zavarokról szólt.
Snake courtyard /Parisian courtyard Kígyó udvar /Párizsi udvar The shopping arcade inside the house was inspired by the Passage des Panoramas in Paris, so probably it s called Parisian Arcade due to this. The Parisian courtyard was enlarged in the 1980s with a new passageway (Snake courtyard) that branches off and opens into Haris alley. Because of the bad design, cheap, un-cleanable materials and the lack of proper lighting the extension became sort of a slum in a mere decade. Good example how different architectural styles cannot communicate to each other over decades. The passages of Budapest are not only famous for their beauty and for being hard to find, but because of several film shootings as well. In this one in particular, the 5th part of the popular sequel Die hard was shot, but its memorable for being the site for the opening scene of the Gary Oldman/Colin Firth movie Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy, a film based on the famous John lecarré spy novel. Az épületben található árkádokat a párizsi Passage des Panoramas ihlette, így valószínűleg nem véletlen, hogy a Párizsi udvar nevet kapta a várostól. A Párizsi udvart az 1980-as években bővítették ki egy új átjáróval (Kígyó udvar), amely a Haris közbe nyílik. A rossz tervezésnek, az olcsó, takaríthatatlan építőanyagoknak és a nem megfelelő világítórendszernek köszönhetően fénye hamar megkopott és leginkább hajléktalanok szálláshelyévé vált. Szomorú, ám kiváló példa arra, hogy a különböző építészeti stílusok nem mindig tudnak zökkenőmentesen együttműködni... Budapest passzázsai azonban nem csak szépségükről híresek, vagy arról, hogy nehéz őket megtalálni, hanem számtalan filmforgatásnak is otthont adtak. A Párizsi udvarban forgatták például a népszerű akciósorozat, a Die Hard 5. részét, valamint a passzázs adta a hátteret a Suszter, szabó, baka, kém című Gary Oldman/Colin Firth film nyitójelenetéhez is, mely egy híres John lecarré kémregény alapján készült.
Klotild Palace/Piarist School Klotild palota/piarista gimnázium The other half of the twin palaces was built at the same time as the so-called Matild palace across the street. The twin sisters are almost mirror images of each other with one big difference... Recently, after a six year long labour, a delightful princess was born, named Buddha Bar Hotel. 102 hotel rooms are ready to welcome guest from all over the world. The outcome of the renovation is a great addition to the inner city, there were no compromises here, neither on the functional side, nor the heritage protection side. With this, the constructors proved that it is possible to find new functions for landmark buildings protecting their original beauty. Established in 1717, the Piarist school was originally a Catholic monastery and it was the earliest catholic high school in Hungary. The school has a glorious past. On the 15th of August 1783 the first air balloon of Hungary took off from the school yard. The first Hungarian final exams were also held here with 143 kids. The final exam system is still in use in Hungary ever since to the sorrow of Hungarian students... Az ikerpaloták másik tagja, Klotild, a túloldali Matilddal egyidejűleg épült. Az ikrek szinte tökéletes tükörképei egymásnak, egy jelentős különbséget kivéve... A közelmúltban, hat évnyi vajúdás után elbűvölő hercegnő született: a Buddha Bar Hotel, mely 102 szobájával a világ minden tájáról várja a vendégeit. A felújítás nagyszerű ráadás a belváros szimfóniájában, a munkálatok során sem működési, sem műemlékvédelmi szempontból nem kötöttek kompromisszumokat, bizonyítva, hogy a jellegzetes épületek is kaphatnak új funkciót eredeti szépségüket megőrizve. Az 1717-ben alapított Piarista gimnázium épülete eredetileg katolikus monostor volt, később ez lett Magyarország első katolikus gimnáziuma. Az iskola ragyogó múlttal büszkélkedhet; 1783. augusztus 15-én innen szállt fel az első magyar léghajó, valamint ebben az iskolában írták az első érettségit 143 diák részvételével. A magyar közoktatás a mai napig ugyanezt az érettségi rendszert követi (a diákok nagy bánatára).
