HUNGARIAN ILLAWARRA NEWSLETTER HUNGARIAN OCTOBER REVOLUTION 1956 The brutal torture and suppression of the Hungarian nation from 1946 till 1956 was achieved by the rule of the might of the Soviet-Russian occupying forces. All the extreme measures that Stalin ever dreamed up to crush his opposition was applied to the Hungarian nation. On the 23rd of October 1956 demonstrating students and workers demanded "Russians go home". The demand was based on the equation: Communism equals Russian occupation. They wanted neither of these two "blessings". Never has a revolution achieved it's aims faster it seemed. There was no civil war. The Army and the Police refused to oppose the demonstrators. Only the special forces ( the dogs in George Orwell's book Animal Farm ) sided with the Soviet forces and both were put down in five short days. The Freedom fighters cut out the foreign emblem from the red, white and green national flag of Hungary and this holed flag became the symbol of the Revolution. The enthusiasm and euphoria was endless. Old antagonists were hugging each other weeping joyful tears. We were free at last. The Soviet forces were leaving the country. Hungary declared independence and neutrality and extended a friendly hand to all nations including Soviet Russia. It was a different kind of revolution in every respect. Though the "ad-hoc" centres of resistance were rarely in contact with each other, the freedom fighters obeyed the same moral code. Honour and chivalry reigned everywhere. There was no looting. The broken shop windows displayed wares which remained untouched. Money was collected for the families of the fallen freedom fighters in open baskets. Civilians and the injured Russian soldiers were treated with equal care. What frightened the Soviet leaders and shocked western communists was the fact that the freedom fighters were mostly young workers and communist educated students who chose God and Patriotism over atheism and a warped, inhuman, utopic ideology called communism. By the 28th of October the Revolution was successfully completed. However by the 2nd of November fresh tank divisions started to enter Hungary. By the 4th of November S o v iet f o r c e s attacked on all fronts and a desperate uneven fight begun. Cont. p. 2 PRESIDENT S REPORT Kedves klubtársaim. Szeretettel köszöntök minden kedves honfitársamat és jó egészséget kívánok mindenkinek. Újra felhasználom az alkalmat, hogy a Magyar Közlöny lapjain szóljak hozzátok. Ez alkalommal az 1956-os Forradalom 54 -ik évfordulójáról emlékezünk meg. Mint minden évben ezuttal is megtartjuk az immár hagyományos gyászmisét a Forradalom mártyrjainak lelkiüdvéért. Az évek fojamán ezeken a miséken nemcsak azok voltak ott akik résztvettek vagy szemtanui voltak az 1956-os forradalomnak,de délvidéki testvéreink is magukévá tették ezt a hagyományt. Ne tartson vissza másvallásuakat sem a misén való megjelenéstől az, hogy Saint Francis Xavier's egy római katolikus Cathedrális. Ez a templom az Isten háza, ahova belépni mindenkinek szabad. Bár tagságunk létszáma egyre fogy, ezt a hagyományos misét minden évben megfogjuk tartani a jövőben is és amig egy is él közülünk, egy csokor virág mindig ott lesz az emlékablak alatt. Ezzel tartozunk azoknak akiknek 54 évvel ezelőtt Isten, Haza és Szabadság olyan fogalmak voltak,melyért érdemes volt az életüket feláldozni. Extract from his poem titled Burial Ceremony....and beat drum, beat For these Hungarian souls When anger simplified Until all answers seemed The same, a bloody sum, And every schoolboy in the torn-up streets Wept to see fulfilled The aching paradox That life belongs to those alone HUNGARIAN OCTOBER REVOLUTION 1956 cont from page 1 T he brutal military intervention on the 4th of November developed into a bloody battle of national self-defence. The Hungarians suffered horrendous losses. During a week of desperate fighting almost 3,000 young people died and many thousands were injured. By the 11th of November the Revolution was crushed. What followed was the most brutal retribution. Internment camps were erected for children and deportation trains started to roll towards the Soviet Union. Only little paper scraps of farewell messages thrown out of trains dispersed along the rail tracks showed the way to banishment. Execution of captured minors was deferred so they could be hanged on their 18th birthday. About 250,000 fled the country and we are amongst them. A s refugees of the 1956 Revolution we set roots in this country. We are always grateful to Australia for giving us a home when we were homeless. We tried to repay this by hard work and decent law abiding behaviour. I believe we have succeeded in this endeavour. We always felt that it is our moral duty to commemorate the event annually and celebrate a Requiem Mass for the salvation of the martyrs of the Revolution. The commemorative window erected in the Saint Francis Xavier's Cathedral portraying the Virgin Mary (patron saint of Hungary) was erected by the Hungarians of Illawarra in 1963. It received papal blessing and the Bishop of Wollongong celebrated the Inaugural Mass. I. Nyari Who loving it, stand ready To pay it the smoke-blackened Compliment of their death... Kéznyujtás után,ahol az ember győzőtt. Köszönjük, hogy adományaikkal Önök is segítettek a magyarországi árvízkárosultakon! Szeptember 28-áig közel 350 millió forintot gyűjtött össze a Nemzet Televíziója a magyarországi árvízkárosultak javára nézői, és ismert szervezetek, nagyvállalatok segítségével. Az összeget a Magyar Ökumenikus Segélyszervezetnek utaltuk át, s az adomány négy teljes falu - Szendrő, Ócsanálos, Tolcsva és Erdőhorváti felújítandó házainak költségeit, és a nélkülözhetetlen ingóságok pótlását fedezi. A Duna Televízió napi műsorain kívül most filmen is bemutatja az eddig elért eredményeket: Kéznyújtás után ahol az ember győzött címmel a magyarországi árvízkárosultak megsegítéséről, a nemzeti összefogás erejéről készített dokumentumfilmet Gantner Barnabás és Jámbor Eszter. A filmet október 10-én, 15.09-től láthatják nézőink. Kézfogás előtt ahol a víz az úr címmel nézőink nyáron már megismerhették azokat a településeket, amelyeket elsodort az ár. Most, filmünk második részében Kéznyújtás után - ahol az ember győzött, október 10., 15.09 - olyan családokat mutatunk be, amelyekhez eljutottak nézőink adományai. Ezekből fel tudták újítani házaikat, meg tudták vásárolni a tönkrement bútorokat, vagy háztartási eszközöket, és nyugodtan várják a téli hidegeket, hiszen a Duna Televízió nézőinek jóvoltából már van tető a fejük felett - ajánlja alkotásukat Gantner Barnabás és Jámbor Eszter. A film bepillantást nyújt az árvízkárosult családok mindennapjaiba éppúgy, mint a falvak vezetői előtt tornyosuló problémákba. Erdőhorvátiban például a falu polgármestere bevallotta: nemhogy segíteni nem tudnak a károsultaknak, de olyan szegények, hogy még a napi feladatokat is csak nagy nehezen tudják ellátni. Így nem csoda, ha a Simon házaspárnak ahol két munkanélküli szülő nevel három gyereket hatalmas segítséget jelentettek az adományok. Itt most még vásárolnak a szülők a tüzépen, de van, ahol már felvakolták a házfalakat, és festenek, mint a Jeremiás-családnál Szendrőn. A ház első szobáját - ahol Jeremiás János édesanyja lakott-, teljesen használhatatlanná tette a víz. A hátsó falat, úgy ahogy van, ki kellett cserélni. Tolcsván, a patakparton lakó Eszti nénihez olyan gyorsan tört be az ár tavasszal, hogy nem volt idő az értékek kimenekítésére, mert az életüket mentették. Hogy mi lesz a házzal, benne a bútorokkal, ruhákkal az akkor másodlagos volt. Most mindent felújíthatnak, és - bár még most is vizesek a falak megvan az új kandalló helye, amivel az egész házat befűthetik télen. Ócsanáloson, Kissék a konyhában laknak június óta. Ágnes itt főz a három gyermekére, és a férjével együtt a tűzhely mellett alszanak. A ház többi része egyelőre teljesen használhatatlan, mert aljzatot cserélnek a munkások. A család reméli, hogy a hideg beköszönte előtt birtokba vehetik az egész házat. Az első részben bemutatott Kassai-családot is felkeressük, és megnézzük, sikerült-e kiszárítani a házat, megvenni a bútorokat, és a felpúposodott parketta helyére vajon mi került? A Duna Televízió és a Magyar Ökumenikus Segélyszervezet tárgyi emléket is kíván állítani a nézők segítőkészségének: Szendrő határában október 2-án, szombaton avatták fel az emléktáblát, melyen a következő szöveg olvasható. Az árvízben megrongálódott házakat a Duna Televízió gyűjtéséből az Ökumenikus Segélyszervezet újítja fel. Szendrő 2010. A későbbiek folyamán Ócsanálos, Tolcsva és Erdőhorváti határába is hasonló táblák kerülnek ki, sőt, a felújított házakon kis réztáblával jelezzük majd, hogy nézőink adományából hozták helyre azokat. HUNGARIAN FLOOD DEVASTATION The DUNA T.V. is a satellite transmitted Hungarian language channel. It is viewed by most Hungarian speaking people around the world. Earlier this year when an unusual rainy season caused flooding of never seen proportions, it devastated dozens of villages. Houses and people s possessions were simply washed away. The DUNA T.V. initiated a charity drive amongst its viewers to help the unfortunate people. The clarion call was answered by Hungarian speaking people around the world and donations were sent to the television station. The donations totalled 350 million forints (Hungarian currency). The Australian - Hungarian Social Club and its members collected $4,500 for this cause. The donations collected by the T.V. station was used to rebuild 4 small villages. The Hungarian language letter on the previous page thanks us for the donation and outlines the way the money was spent. I.N. Idősgondozási felmérő csoport AGED CARE ASSESSMENT TEAM (ACAT) Az első lépés a legtöbb államilag támogatott idősgondozási szolgáltatás elérése felé egy állapotvizsgálat, amelyet az idősgondozási felmérő csoport (ACAT) végez. Jogosultságot közösségi programcsomagra, otthoni kibővített idősgondozási programra és bentlakó gondozásra az ACAT felméréssel határozzák meg, az illető személy szükségleteinek elbírálásával. Ez a szolgáltatás ingyenes és bizalmas, a folyamat pedig egyáltalán nem bonyolult. Az ACAT képviselője (általában orvos, ápolónő, szociális dolgozó vagy más egészségügyi szakember) felméri az Ön helyzetét és gondozási igényeit. Ezután tájékoztatják Önt arról, hogy milyen szolgáltatásokra jogosult és hogy hol találja meg a szükségleteit kielégítő szolgáltatást. Tetszése szerint egy rokona vagy barátja is jelen lehet a felmérésnél. Joga van kérni az ACAT-ot, hogy biztosítson tolmácsot. ACCREDITATION STANDARDS RESIDENTIAL AGED CARE FACILITIES MUST COMPLY WITH THE FOUR AGED CARE STANDARDS AND FORTY FOUR EXPECTED OUTCOMES These four Standards help providers meet their responsibilities under the Aged Care Act 1997. The Standards also assist workers to understand residential aged care legal obligations by which they have to abide by. This issue of the Hungarian Newsletter briefly describes the four Standards. Standard Three on the next page describes Resident Lifestyle. In the next issue more explanation will be given about Standard Three. In 2011 information sessions will be given on the Standards. Intention of standard: This standard is intended to enhance the quality of care under all accreditation standards, and should not be regarded as an end in itself. It provides opportunities for improvement in all aspects of service delivery and is pivotal to the achievement of overall quality. Standard 2 HEALTH AND PERSONAL CARE Principle: Residents physical and mental health will be promoted and achieved at the optimum level, in partnership between each resident (or his or her representative) and the health care team. Standard 3 RESIDENT LIFESTYLE Principle: Residents retain their personal, civic, legal and consumer rights, and are assisted to achieve active control of their own lives within the residential care service and in the community. Standard 4 PHYSICAL AND SAFE SYSTEMS Principle: Residents live in a safe and comfortable environment that ensures the quality of life and welfare of residents, staff and visitors. 6

STANDARD 3 RESIDENT LIFESTYLE Principle: Residents retain their personal, civic, legal and consumer rights, and are assisted to achieve active control of their own lives within the residential care service and in the community. Expected outcome: 3.1 Continuous improvement The organisation actively pursues continuous improvement. 3.2 Regulatory compliance The organisation s management has systems in place to identify and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, regulatory requirements, professional standards and guidelines, about resident lifestyle. 3.3 Education and staff development Management and staff have appropriate knowledge and skills to perform their roles effectively. 3.4 Emotional support Each resident receives support in adjusting to life in the new environment and on an ongoing basis. 3.5 Independence Residents are assisted to achieve maximum independence, maintain friendships and participate in the life of the community within and outside the residential care service 3.6 Privacy and dignity Each resident s right to privacy, dignity and confidentiality is recognised and respected. 3.7 Leisure interests and activities Residents are encouraged and supported to participate in a wide range of interests and activities of interest to them. 3.8 Cultural and spiritual life Individual interests, customs, beliefs and cultural and ethnic backgrounds are valued and fostered. 3.9 Choice and decision making Each resident (or his or her representative) participates in decisions about the services the resident receives, and is enabled to exercise choice and control over his or her lifestyle while not infringing on the rights of other people. 3.10 Resident security of tenure and responsibilities Residents have secure tenure within the residential care service, and understand their rights and responsibilities.
