ANNALES HISTORICO-NATURALES MUSEI NATION ALI S HUNGARICI Tomus 79. Budapest, 1987 p. 37-42. In memóriám László Vajda (1890 1986) by M. RAJCZY, Budapest Senior of the Hungarian bryologists and plant photographers, László Vajda departed in the ninety-seventh year of his life on 2nd November, 1986 in Budapest. He was born in Budapest on the 28th of June 1890. After secondary school he started to work as a clerk in a bank. In 1913 he moved to Sóvár, a little town of contemporary Hungary (recently Solivar in Czechoslovakia), acting on the advice of his physicians. Here, wandering in the woods of the Carpathians, he became a naturalist, collected insects and plants, and made drawings and took photographs. Some years later he adopted his special field of interest, though still collecting insects, he studied mainly plants. The young amateur botanist discovered the interesting world of the cryptogamic plants, collecting, among others, bryophytes and lichens. He made more and more photographs on plants. After World War I he had to return to Budapest, thus from 1920 on he organized his holiday field trips first in the surroundings of the capital. His herbarium and phototheca grew bigger and bigger. The famous Hungarian botanist, Sándor Jávorka advised him where to go, what to look for.
Vajda took photographs and collected the vaucher specimens not only i n Hungary, but i n the neighbouring countries as well. Together w i t h his nephew, E r n ő Vajda, they published their best photographs i n a series entitled Flora photographica H u n g á r i á é from 1929 t i l l 1941. First he only demonstrated his new photographs and had accounts on his field trips on the meetings o f the Botanical Section o f the Hungarian Natural History Society, but from 1936 on he began to give lectures on his new floristical data, and regularly published his results. This is the time when he met the man, who gave h i m advices i n the field he had already liked f o r years, the bryology. This was a decisive event i n his life. The bryologist Á d á m Boros became his best friend and colleague afterwards. F r o m that time on László Vajda spent more and more time on the study of these little plants. W i t h i n 10-15 years he became an excellent bryologist, specialist o f the tiny leafy liverworts, that he knew better, than any other Hungarian bryologist. I n 1952, when as a clerk he retired, he was appointed to a museologist's post i n the Botanical Department of the Hungarian N a t u r a l History Museum. A t last he had the possibility to devote all his time to bryology and to plant photo graphy, his scientific ambitions were finally on the way o f realization. Year by year he col lected a number o f bryophyte specimens i n Hungary, i n the Carpathians and even i n the Alps and i n Dalmatia. His last long field trip he had i n the age of 84 i n the Retyezát Mts. (Transylvanian Alps, Romania), where he climbed the 2400 m high ridge. I n his last years i n the Museum he worked on the new handbook o f the Hungarian bryoflora, written together w i t h his student, S á n d o r O r b á n. This book is a turning-point i n Hungarian bryology, the completion o f an era which can be named as the exploration o f Hungary bryologically. László Vajda had a long and fruitful life. I n his field trips and i n the gatherings o f other bryologists he found nearly 100 new species for the Hungarian bryoflora and several ones for the neighbouring countries. The original bryophyte collection, about 30,000 specimens, is kept i n the Botanical Department o f the Hungarian Natural History Museum (BP), the duplicate collection has got to the herbarium o f the H o Shi M i n h Teacher's College i n Eger ( E G R ). His valuable collection o f higher plants (containing many rarities and thus filling several gaps i n the herbarium) and his phototheca are kept i n BP as well. As a taxonomist, he described 24 new taxa (1 liverwort species amongst them) and 3 plant taxa are named after him. He wrote 74 scientific papers and several popular ones. I t is almost impossible to count all the publications illustrated by his photographs. I n 1985, he was awarded the Silver Med al, Order of W o r k for his botanical activities and the medal 'Pro Natura' f o r his activity on plant photography. LIST OF SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS BY L.
