Győr can be characterized by many outstanding facets and the beautiful baroque downtown is a real jewel box. In this city that is full of monuments (Győr is ranked 3rd in Hungary), historic palaces, unique corner balconies and statues, the visitors are invited to take a trip back in time. When arriving from Vienna or Budapest our view is first directed to the imposing symbol of the city, the neo-renaissance city hall. From its 59 meters high tower, on the hour, we can hear a traditional melody from Szigetköz, a region near to Győr. It is hard to recognize the downtown from years previous due to the continuous renovations. Széchenyi Square, the main square of the city, is considered one of the most beautiful baroque squares of East-Central Europe. The oldest and most well known building of the city is the Basilica, which is situated next to the Rába River, on Chapter Hill. One of the most significant Christian relics of Hungary, the reliquary of King St. Ladislaus (László) is kept here. The picture of the Weeping Madonna in the northern nave of the Basilica is a place of pilgrimage, and more and more people visit the tomb of the martyred bishop, Blessed Vilmos Apor. The most famous building on the Rába riverside is the Carmelite church, where we can visit the so-called dark chapel, a copy of the Loreto-House in Italy and admire a copy of the original statue of the Black Madonna. The Sforza Bastion of the castle of Győr stands on the Vienna Gate Square, which is surrounded by baroque houses. The bastion is the only part of the medieval fortification that has remained untouched. On the other side of the river we can find the only part of a city in Europe in that churches of 5 different religions were built next to each other, among them a neolog synagogue. The city of Győr is continuously developing but at the same time it is preserving its old values and the historical baroque buildings. It is worth getting to know the real Győr, the City of Meetings. 5 Győr, the city of culture Did you know that the City of Győr celebrated the 30th birthday of the legendary Ballet of Győr in 2009 The Ballet of Győr was founded by Iván Markó and the graduating students of the State Ballet Institute. Since then they have had success after success. The Ballet of Győr is now led by János Kiss, a former foundingmember who contributes to the good reputation of the City of Győr and Hungary all over the world. I n 2010, after four long years of hard work Győr was awarded the prize of the Hungarian City of Culture. Over the years the city developed and organized various festivals that have attracted visitors not only from Hungary but also from all over the world. The festivals of the city are joined by the Four Seasons Festival, which is a series of program that aims to provide high quality entertainment for people of all ages. The Kid s Festival is an event that attracts thousands of children during the colder winter days of Advent. 6 Győr, the City of Children Did you know that Karl May, the German writer who sold the most books ever, modeled the figure of Old Shatterhand on János Xántus, whose name honors a museum and the zoo in Győr The letter in which May asks for permission from the extensive traveler and explorer can still be seen in the Karl May Museum in Dresden. In the Winnetou stories a certain rifle called the Henry Carbine has an important role. The silver-plated carbine that wears the name of John Xantus can be seen in the János Xantus Museum in Győr. C hildren are important to Győr, so the local government pays significant attention to providing them, their parents and grandparents with as many happy moments as possible. The city was loud of the laughter of thousands of children having fun at the Kids Festival organized for the first time in Since then, the annual Kids Festival organized on the first weekend in July has grown into an international phenomenon. From the smiley photos used as admission tickets over the years one could build a road several thousands of kilometers long. At the 4-day-long festival organized on 10 venues with a 1000 programs everything caters to the young ones. As the slogan goes, the entrance fee is only the children s smiley photo that lets them into all the programs, while children enjoy free services at restaurants, hotels and pensions. Children ride free on the city s public transportation system as well as on their way to Győr by bus or train. The Kids Festival is accompanied by the Kids Olympic Games, where teams can compete in 4 different sports events on many different locations of the city. Coaches full of children arrive at this exciting competition from many parts of the country, as well as from the twin cities of Győr. Fortunately, the creative team of the Iron Rooster Puppet Theatre of Győr does not only charm children of all ages on that weekend, but it entertains them from week to week with sold-out shows in the story palace of the puppet theatre. The first, unique Children s Museum of the country that ushers its small guests into the world of art in a creative and exciting way, was also opened in Győr. The Children s House is home to arts and crafts courses and quiz shows from week to wee Moreover, in the city also known as the Gate of the West, special attention is paid to the young children through the theatre programs and the summer events that are aimed at them. The International Doll Exhibition is also for the sake of the children, but even adults can enjoy a special experience if they visit the most beautiful Baroque palace of the city, the Zichy Palace. Győr is proud of the János Xantus Zoo that has improved and gotten more beautiful over the years. The births of Chico, the jaguar baby and Maximus, the baby hooded capuchin monkey created a real media sensation. Győr nowadays is also known as the city of playgrounds, because the city was the first one to get rid of the outmoded playground equipment in the country. The municipality of Győr spent more than 650 million HUF on building all over the city almost a 100 safe, skill-developing playgrounds and parks that meet the requirements of the European Union. 7 Győr, the Sporty City Did you know that the Kids Olympic Games organized in conjunction with the Kids Festival is at the best place in Győr, because it is the only city with an Olympic Champion as mayor Zsolt Borkai, the mayor of Győr won a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988, where he scored 10 points on the pommel horse despite being injured at the time. It is not by chance that Győr is often mentioned as one of the Hungarian cities of sport. N owadays Győr is not only referred to as the City of Meetings and Rivers, but also as the sportiest city of Hungary. Thanks to the active and successful sport-life of Győr, Mr. Zsolt Borkai the former Olympic Champion in gymnastics and current mayor of the City received in 2010 the prize of the Sportiest City that acknowledged the sport policy and success of the city. This recognition rightly reflects the outstanding achievement of the clubs and sportsmen of Győr, as well as the exemplary decision of the city s management regarding the support of sport. Namely, since 2007, Győr has been using a huge amount of its yearly budget to support the living sport, by making it possible for the children to move more, by expanding the possibilities for sports enthusiasts, and training the role models of the future. The county seat of Kisalföld places great emphasis on the importance of an active life style. The city s Sports and Health Days organized in every season are very popular among the residents of Győr, and the school-children gladly participate in the high-quality local games that they can visit free of charge. This way the children can personally experience the exciting moments of active sport and cheering, as well as the adrenalin-raising effect of sport. The city is proud of its first league teams in football, futsal (indoor football), basketball and handball, that all finished the 2010 championship on the podium to the great pleasure of the inhabitants of Győr. The women s handball team of the Audi ETO KC brings from year to year unforgettable moments in the lives of its fans with its Champions League matches. The ETO FC football team has been among the best teams of the country since the 60s. Being the city of rivers, the kayak-canoe section of Győr is among the most successful ones, and it has trained Olympic Champions like Zoltán Kammerer, the three-time Olympic Gold Medalist kayak racer or the young hopeful, Ramóna Farkasdi. The annual Kids Olympic Games have attracted international teams, and they offer exciting competitions and unforgettable moments as part of the Kids Festival. The Friendship Sport-Park that opened its doors to the public in 2009 welcomes sports enthusiasts in its beautiful environment with artificial grass football and athletic fields, as well as basketballand foot tennis courts. The city places great emphasis on the organization of international sports events, as it did in the past 4 years when the Gate of the West gave home to 7 European xor World Championships, in such sports as handball, pentathlon, kayak-canoe, or water-polo. It is by no chance that plans for a mega-sports arena with a huge capacity to entertain thousands and be home to even bigger sports events in the future, are underway in Győr. 8 Győr, the innovative city Did you know that the City of Győr is home to the Hungarian factory of AUDI Audi is one of the most popular car producers in the world, its German center can be found in Ingolstadt. Since 2008 this German city has been one of 9 twin cities of Győr. Audi Hungaria Motor Ltd. has thousands of employees in Győr, and this is the only factory in the world where the Audi TT sport cars and Audi A3 Cabriolet cars are assembled. In 2010 the 500,000th car rolled down the factory line in Győr. G yőr is a dynamically developing, innovative city due to its excellent geographic situation, developed industry and skilled workforce. In the golden triangle, between Vienna, Budapest and Bratislava, near the airport of Pér and the M1 highway, the county seat of the Kisalföld has become one of the largest economic and industrial centers of Hungary. There have been ongoing consultations between the municipal leaders and the directors of the larger corporations for many years. It is believed that this is one of the reasons why the vocational education of the city has transformed in such a way that the demands of labor of the investors coming to Győr are fulfilled with the local labor market supply. The Industrial Park of the city has been recently expanded for the seventh time and it now gives home to companies from more than 14 countries on some hundreds of acres. Due to conscious city planning and the attractiveness of Győr, AUDI is going to invest approximately 252 million HUF into the expansion of its car-production facility by the end of The factory in Győr will result in a complex car-production facility that will provide the city with more than a thousand new workplaces. The TT Coupé, which is produced at the factory, could be called a Hungaricum, because the wonderful sports car is produced only in Győr and nowhere else in the world. only car that managed to produce more energy than it consumed. The cooperation of the Municipality, the Audi and the University is a pledge that will lead to continuous development in the future. The university is undergoing an infrastructure development of more than billion Forints with the support of the European Union. In addition, the local government, using its own resources, has completed the new bridge of Győr, the Ányos Jedlik Bridge, which stands next to the university. This investment is connected to a huge road development on both sides of the river. The cooperation of the city and the university was exemplified at the opening of the bridge when the solar car designed by the students of the university was the first vehicle to roll over the new bridge of Győr. In 2012 the Mobilis Interactive Exhibition Centre is going to open its doors. The preservation of the relics of different historic eras, the restoration of the baroque downtown, as well as the development of tourism and modern industries give the city its own special character. While walking in Győr we can experience how a city can be traditional and modern at the same time. The two universities attract tens of thousands of students and among them are exchange students from all over the world. The nine twin cities of Győr guarantee the meeting of nations, because they are permanent participants in the cultural life and festivals of the city. If we discover Győr with our families or with our friends, the city of rivers will surely have interesting sites and programs for us. The pubs and university clubs of the city are a favorite meeting point of young people, where they can be entertained in a safe and fabulous atmosphere. 10 Legends and true stories of Győr Did you know that in Győr the Iron Rooster weather vane crows every year The Iron Rooster Festive Games commemorate the local legend from 1598 that after being here for 4 long years, the Turks were expelled from the city. The pretentious Turks proudly boasted that Győr would only be recaptured by the Hungarians if the Iron Rooster started to crow. At the night of the siege a brave Hungarian boy climbed up the tower and started to imitate the sound of the Rooster. At daybreak the Hungarian soldiers recaptured the castle of Győr. 19 The legendary Iron Rooster In memory of the sacrilege He hit the nail on the head The inventor of the dynamo and soda water: Ányos Jedlik One of the most valuable relics of Hungary Kisfaludy and his notes Legends and true stories of Győr The story of the Iron Rooster The well-known symbol of the city of Győr, the Iron Rooster was erected on the Danube Gate Square by the Turks in 1594, after they had conquered the city. The leader of the invading troops believed that the castle was impossible to capture and he proudly predicted: Győr would only be in Christian hands again if the Iron Rooster started to crow and the half moon below it would turn into a full moon. Four years later as the Hungarian troops aiming at recapture the castle reached the Fejérvár Gate, one brave cavalryman climbed up to the Iron Rooster and waited until daybrea In the dawn light he imitated the crow of the rooster, and as the rays of the rising sun hit the half moon it made it look full. The Turks thought that the prophecy had come true and their God had taken the side of the Hungarians. In the huge panic they exploded their barrels full of gunpowder and due to this they decided the end of the battle. The Ark of Covenant One of the most beautiful baroque monuments of Győr is the Arc of Covenant, which stands on the Gutenberg Square. The statue has an interesting story: in 1729 a soldier accused of bigamy and using a false name fled to the Jesuit monastery for sanctuary. The city guards put the building under blockade, thus preventing the escape of the deserter. However, the bishop thought out a plan: on the feast of Corpus Christi they traditionally held a procession in the town, so he gave the soldier altar-boy clothes to help him escape from his fellow-soldiers. He was unfortunately recognized despite all of these efforts. In the ensuing melee the monstrance fell out of the hands of the bishop and it broke into pieces. Even the Emperor s court in Vienna heard of this sacrilege, and King Charles III ordered that the inhabitants of Győr should ask for the forgiveness of God with this statue. And why does the monument illustrate the Ark of the Covenant According to the legend the broken pieces of the blessed sacrament of the Eucharist and monstrance were put into the sealed ark, and since then the angels have guarded them. The house with the iron stump The house got its name from the iron nail-tree on its corner. In 1833 Mátyás Zittrisch, a grocer, bought the building and he placed a tree trunk coated with iron bands and nails, copying the Stock im Eisen in Vienna, on the corner of the house. According to the traditions the traveling young craftsmen hit a nail into this stump as a memory of the time they had spent in the city. The White Woman of Lőcse The well-known heroin of the novel of Mór Jókai, the white woman of Lőcse, Mrs. Julianna Ghéczy Korponai was imprisoned in the old Town Hall from April She was accused of having helped the emperor s troops occupy the city of Lőcse during the Rákóczi war of independence. In fact she only had a diplomatic role she transmitted letters and messages between the two sides before the city capitulated but according to the propaganda the city fell because of her treason. After a long lengthy trial she was beheaded on Széchenyi Square, the ancient market square of Győr, on 25th September 1715 in front of a huge crowd. Her story was immortalized by Mór Jókai in his novel entitled The White Woman of Lőcse. Picture of the Weeping Madonna The painting that can be seen in the northern nave of the Basilica was brought to Győr by Walter Lynch, a bishop of Ireland, when he fled from the persecution of the Catholics by Oliver Cromwell. Some decades later there was a new wave of persecution of the Catholics in Ireland and it is at this time that every bishop of the country was exiled. On the day of the Parliament s resolution, on 17th March 1697, which is the feast of the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, bloody tears rolled down the eyes of the Madonna. The tears were mopped up with a white linen cloth that was later framed and attested to by bishop Ferenc Zichy. The blood though pale still can be seen on the cloth that is kept in the Diocesan Treasury. From this time on the Cathedral of Győr has been a place of pilgrimage and the holy picture is still highly respected. Ányos Jedlik and the wine spritzer Maybe only a few people know that the list of Hungarian inventions is enriched by a very popular drink, the wine spritzer (wine with soda water), which was invented by a Benedictine monk, teacher and physician of Győr. Previously, mineral water that often had to be transported huge distances was the favorite drink in numerous monasteries. Due to the terrible road conditions the carbon dioxide was shaken out of the water. To solve this problem Jedlik invented the soda water, which in turn was only one step away from the popular wine spritzer. Every year the city of Győr organizes a Wine Spritzer Festival to honor this creation. Saint László Reliquary Our knighted king, St. László was laid to rest in Nagyvárad, the pieces of his skull were placed into a golden-silver reliquary that was decorated with wire enamel. After being chosen to be the bishop of Győr, the bishop of Nagyvárad brought this reliquary to the city as gift. The respect for this holy king spread greatly after the earthquake in The faithful were prayed to St. László to protect Győr from the earthquake. The city was not heavily damaged, therefore on 27th June 1763 Bishop Ferenc Zichy organized a huge thanksgiving feast and he decreed that the reliquary be taken on a procession every year around the town. Statue of Károly Kisfaludy The bronze statue of the writer born near Győr, in Tét, stands on the Vienna Gate Square. Many legends are connected to the statue: if we take a look at the figure of Kisfaludy, we can see papers and a pen in his hands. As Győr is also known as the city of education because of its numerous reputable schools, in the morning we can see lots of diligent pupils hurrying to school in the downtown. Kisfaludy looks around the square shortly before 8 o clock, and he notes down the names of pupils who are late to school. On his paper he also has a record of the cars parking in the no parking zone in the square. As we now see, after his death, the renowned Hungarian poet and dramatist is still busy working for the city.
