Régészeti kutatások az aquincumi canabae nyugati, ipari régiójában Archaeological investigations in the western, industrial quarters in the Aquincum canabae (Budapest, III. ker., Kiseelli utca 75., 98., llrsz.: 17265, 16214) (Budapest III, 75, 98 Kiseelli Lrn.: 17265, 16214) Street, Az előző év decemberében, a III. ker., Kiseelli utca 75-ben megkezdett feltárások januárban folytatódtak a Skarlát Kft. megbízásából. (KIRCHHOF 2002, 144.) Az ásatások során a szomszédos telek területén feltárt úgynevezett Kiseelli úti fazekastelep (NAGY L. 1937, 268, NAGY I, 1942/1, 627-629, PÓCZY 1956, 78-90.) termékei jöttek elő. A nagy menynyiségben előkerült dörzstálak helyi gyártásra engednek következtetni. A telek területén a 3. század folya- In January, excavations got underway at 75 Kiseelli Street in December of the last year were a continuation of a commission by Skarlát Kft (KIRCHHOF 2002, 144). The excavations brought to light products of the so-called Kiseelli Road pottery workshop unearthed in the territory of the neighboring lot (NAGY 1937, 268; NAGY 1942/1, 627-629; PÓCZY 1956, 78-90). The large quantity of grinding mortars imply local production. We could not find any feature that could be linked with the workshop, so that, only leveling and soil accumulation strata could be recorded. The only clear feature was a modern well, which may already have been in use in the Roman period, although there is no direct evidence to prove it. We had no opportunity to dig out the well to the very bottom as it will not be disturbed beneath the foundation of the deep parking lot and can be

(KIRCHHOF 2002, 144.) A természetes terepadottságoknak megfelelően a telek nvugat-keleti irányban lejtett. A római kori rétegek a telek déli vége felé elvékonyodtak. A Lakásinveszt Kft. megbízásából 2002. márciusa és májusa között megelőző feltárást folytattunk a III. ker., Kiseelli utca 98. számú ház helyén. A területtől délre a Bécsi út 122., 124-128. telkeken az 1960-70- studied in the future. The pottery workshop no longer operated in the territory of the lot in the AD 3 rd century. In the northern end of the investigated area, wall remains from a east-west oriented building were found (KIRCHHOF 2002, 144). The surface slanted from west to east following the natural morphology of the surface. The Roman period layers thinned toward the southern end of the lot and were thicker in the northern areas. We carried out excavations preceding development work at the commission of the Lakásinvest Kft. in lot no. 98 on Kiseelli Road. Györgyi Parragi conducted excavations south of the territory in lots 122 and 124-128 Bécsi Road m the 1960's and 1970's. At that time she unearthed a pottery firing workshop from the early Imperial period together with kilns, storage and drying spaces (PARRAGI 1973, 260, 24.; PARRAGI 1971, 70, 71, 78; PARRAGI 1976). Use of brick work in building may have begun in the territory after the appearance of the legio II adiutrix. It continued after pottery production ceased here in the first third of the AD 2 nd century (PARRAGI 1973, 261, 25) until the end of the AD 4"' century (POCZY-ZSIDI 1992, 17-19).
es években Parragi Györgyi által folytatott kutatások során koracsászárkori kerámiaégető műhely került napvilágra, kemencékkel, raktár- és szárítóhelyiségekkel. (PARRAGI 1973, 260, 24, PARRAGI 1971, 70, 71,78, PARRAGI 1976) A téglagyártás a legio 11 adiutrix megjelenése után indulhatott meg a területen, és a kerámiagyártás megszűnése után a 2. század első harmadától (PARRAGI 1973, 261, 25.) a 4. század végéig folytatódott. (PO- CZY-ZSIDI 1992, 17-19.) A telek délnyugati vegében jelentkező kövcs-tégás omladékból a legio 11 adiutrix bélyeges téglája jött elő. Az ásatás során napvilágra került lunula és planta pedis alakokba foglalt téglabélvegek többségén ennek a légiónak a felirata olvasható. Egy lunula 2. kép: Szövőszéknehezékek Fig. 2: Warp weights alakú bé- The debris laver of stones and bricks at the southwestern end of the lot contained a stamped brick from the legio 11 adiutrix. The mark of this legion can be seen in most of the brick stamps enclosed in lunula and planta pedis shapes unearthed during the excavation. A lunulashaped stamp and a kiln filled with similarly stamped bricks ready for firing had previously been found in a neighboring lot (PARRAGI 1971, 21, fig. 2, 74, fig. 19; PARRAGI 1976, 163, LORINCZ 1981). The crescent-shaped brick stamps of the legio 11 adiutrix and those imitating the shape of a human foot can be dated from the beginning and first half of the AD 2 ml century (SZILÁGYI 1933, 33, 34, Nr. 101a; SZIIÁGYI 1950, 308, fig. 5, 310; LORINCZ 1978a, 303 dated to between AD 162-166). Similarly early stamps of the legion were found in the territory of the Kiseelli Road pottery workshop (NAGY 1937; LORINCZ 1978) and during the canalization work in Majláth Street (SZILÁGYI 1933, VII. t. 76, 90) We found the bed of a stream (or a ditch?) at the floor level of the Ro-

(SZILÁ GYI 1933, VII. t. 76, 90.) Az árok? szegélyét kövekkel rakták ki. Később feltehetően hegycsuszamlás következtében kiseelli sárgás-szürke agvaggal töltődött fel, valószínűleg egy lassabb folyamat következtében. A feltételezett patak ideális környezetet nyújthatott a közeli ipartelep működtetéséhez. A Bécsi út 128. számú telken feltárt északkelet-délnyugati irányú, terrazzóval man period levels which intersected the prehistoric layer in the northwest area of the plot. It probably developed in the Roman period. Its bed was covered with rocks. Later it became filled in with Kiseelli yellowish-grey clay probably as the consecjuence of a landslide. It must have been a slow process as suggested bv grayish stripes in the clav. The hypothesized stream would have provided an ideal environment for the operation of the nearbv industrial complex. We could not find the continuation of the northeast-southwest running channel lined with terrazzo, which was unearthed in lot 128 Bécsi Road (PARRAGI 1971, 60, fig. 9 1-2). A northeast-southwest oriented, angled, probably subterranean feature measuring 1.40 x 2 m and 1.60 m (the approximated length is about 2.60 m) was unearthed in the western part of the lot. Its bottom was paved with flat bricks measuring 56 X 54-60 X 62 cm (6 bricks were found in an only slightly fragmentary condition). The bricks were laid unsystematically with the bottoms down and turned downwards. A 60 cm long fragment of a clay pipe with a round cross-section was found running towards the northeast, in the same direction as the feature but 1
A medencétől keletre két, kerámiával és téglákkal kevert sávban jelentkező réteget azonosítottunk, m from it. It certainly must have run into the angular feature paved with bricks, however, modern canalization channels destroyed the joint and the northeast end of the feature. No find material was recovered from this area, so we can only infer function from the proximity of the Roman period industrial complex. Perhaps it was used as a clay processing basin. Nevertheless, since the pipe was not directed toward the stream, and it lay higher than the bottom of the "basin" it may have carried water. Two layers mixed with pottery and bricks appeared in strips east of the basin. They may be leveling layers from the workshop debris of the early Imperial period pottery workshop. This is implied by pottery sherds with vine relief ornaments (PÓCZY 1956, 78-87), which seem to be associated with the material of the Kiseelli Road pottery workshop. The stony surface unearthed in the central part of trench 2, which was probably the remains from the leveling of a building, may be contemporary with or younger than the spread of the workshop debris. The leveling level mixed with bricks and pottery sherds which began from beside the stony surface was probably partly the ruin of a building, to
A szabályos négyzetes alapú, 13-16 centiméter magas, tetején 7x8 centiméter, alján 11 X 12 centiméter széles nehezékek oldalán felfüggesztésre szolgáló Kuk található. Mindegyik tárgy tetején sarkokból induló, kereszt alakú bemélyített vájat figyelhető meg, a csomópontban többnyire which a brick heating channel had been joined as suggested by the shape and the positioning of the bricks. It is also possible that it, too, was only debris from the pottery workshop. The snake-shaped brooch, probably with enamel inlay, was found north of it. Seven clav weights were found in a yellowish red clayey spot in the lot. The weights have regular square bases. They are 13-16 cm high and 7x8 cm at the top and 11x12 cm at their base. A hole for suspension can be seen in their sides. Each weight has a crossshaped, depressed groove on the top starting from the corners, usually with an impressed hole at their the junction. The loom weights are older than the workshop debris and can probably be dated to the Celtic or early Roman period. Roman loom weights with similar measurements were found (11 specimens) in Albertfalva (SZIRMAI 1984, 155-156, 158, 178, figs. 19/1, 19/2). We encountered a rubble layer of stones and bricks in the northeast corner of the lot, in which a sherd bearing a cursive inscription was found. Another stony rubble layer was discovered in the southeast area of the plot, extending in a northwest-southeast direction. Wall painting fragments from the
Az apró és kevés töredék ellenére rombuszos AD 3 rd and 4 th centuries were uncovered in the leveling layer of the building at the easternmost border of lot 98 between the two areas of rubble on Kiseelli Street. The majority of the wall painting fragments displayed red sprinkled or wavy patterns on a yellow background, orange, ochre vellow, red and black sprinkled patterns on a green background or orange and ochre yellow sprinkled, marble imitation patterns on a red background from the AD 3 rd century. The analysis and the comparison of the tiny fragments imply that they were part of a decorated footing element divided into exactly measured fields. Fields of yellow green and yellow red marble imitations alternated with each other. Despite the tiny and few fragments, the structure of the composition could be reconstructed. The ceiling of the room was domed, which is proved by an arched fragment with a black stripe at the juncture of the vertical wall and the arch of the dome. The excavations which should get underway in the neighboring lot in 2003 will probably yield further remains from this and other decorative compositions since only the western end of the leveling layer has been unearthed. This decoration, which probably dates from
Kirchhof Anita Az őskort a Kiseelli utca 98. számú telken a középső rézkori Ludanice-kultúra képviselte. (A geológiai meghatározásokat Mindszentv Andrea és Horváth Zoltán, the AD 3"' century, was covered by a plaster layer and then repainted. The character and the style of the two fragments from the second period discovered so far, are different from those on the marble imitation wall painting. On both fragments, a linear composition was painted in red on a white background. Anita Kirchhof The prehistoric period was represented at the site by remains from the Late Copper age Ludanice culture. The culture-bearing layer lay on top of a Pleistocene loessy deposit. Its thickness varied between 30 and 50 cm and was brownish in color. The lime concretions iir it indicate the layer was formed during a dry climatic period. (Geological identifications were carried out by Andrea Mindszenty and Zoltán Horváth, ELTE TTK). The territory, together with the prehistoric settlement, sloped eastwards towards the Danube. Prehistoric finds could be observed over the entire surface, everywhere directly beneath the Roman period layers. The layer thickness was only 25-30 cm in the western part of the territory, while in the center of the excavated sur-
ELTE TTK végezték.) A terület és vele egvütt az. őskori település is keleti irányba, a Duna felé lejtett. A rézkorhoz 11 objektum tartozott. Fontosabb jelenségek Az ásatási terület nyugati szélén fekvő I. kutatóárok déli felében körülbelül 30 centiméter mélységben az. őskori rétegen egy nagyméretű, összeroppant, öblös hasú tárolóedény töredékei kerültek elő rögtön az ásatás elején. Az edény face, in trenches V and VI, settlement activity proved to have been very intensive. Apart from the subsequent disturbances caused during the Roman period, indicated by Copper Age finds in the Roman period layers, no serious damage was done to the prehistoric features, so they can be considered closed and authentic units. Eleven features came from the Copper Age. The majority of the 11 pits could be unearthed and documented, but sections of features 5/a, 6/1, 10 and 11 remained under trenches IV and VIII. In these trenches we were not able to reach virgin soil due to lack of time and money. The most important phenomena fragments of a large, cracked storage vessel with a bulbous belly were found at a depth of about 30 em in the southern part of trench I at the western edge of the excavated surface right at the beginning of the excavation. The thickened rim and neck regions of the vessel and the three so-called discoid handles (Scheibenhenkel) protruding from the walls of the vessel are unfamiliar phenomena in the Luclanice culture, but we cannot say more about their origin until the vessel is restored. The vessel contained
Az állatcsontok között szerepelt egy szarvas debitage megmunkálási nyomokkal (csontár?), egy agvarkaparó és egv fibulából (?) készült csiszolt tárgy (Alice Choyke megpebbles, rock flakes, some well preserved bones, a stone blade, bivalve shells and fragments of snail shells and a burnt earth lump measuring 30 cm in diameter. A fourth handle with a similar shape and a discoid base was found in the northeastern part of trench V during clearing of the prehistoric laver. Pit no. 1 was found next to the above-mentioned storage vessel, on the border of trench I and eut I. It has a slight beehive-shape with a flat bottom. It contained an extremely rich and varied find material. The finds were distributed in strata with no trace of burning or ash. Many sherds were recovered. Beside the characteristic sherds of the Ludanice culture, a rim with a rib ornament is worth mentioning. This latter rim is blackish, excellently fired and it is different from the remainder of the ceramics in every respect. The animal bone material contained a red deer bone with traces of processing (bone awl?), a tusk scraper and a polished object made from a fibula (?) (identified by Alice Choyke). Further important finds included numerous ochre lumps, a heavily burned earthen lump with tiny traces of copper. Many cores and chips were found among the stones.
A kemence szája nyugati irányba nézett. A kemencében rézművesség nyomai ugyan nem voltak észlelhetők, de tőle közvetlenül északra, a VI. szelvényben találtunk két kis rézrögöt, mintegy 3-4 milliméter átmérővel Several features dug into one another were unearthed under the Roman layer in cuts V VI. Of these, pit 5 proved to be the most important. It was divided into three smaller features (5a-e) close to the virgin soil. The most significant of the smaller features no. 5/b in the northeastern corner of cut V It was a round kiln, heavily burned during use. The large light brown wall fragments of a well fired, sizable and relatively thin-walled storage vessel were found on its baking surface. Even a part of the dome survived on the eastern side up to a height of 1 5-20 cm. The mouth of the kiln opened to the west. The kiln was built on the bottom of a smaller pit, which was an element in a larger pit complex. The neighboring features (V/a, V/c and VI) also yielded a rich Copper Age material. Although no trace of copper working could be demonstrated in the kiln, two small copper lumps measuring 3-4 mm in diameter were discovered in cutting VI just to the north of it. They were accompanied by a smelting pot with a pointed terminal and small copper remains within it. These objects represent direct proofs of local copper working. The significance of the Copper Age site is that former excavations
és egy csúcsos végű öntőtálkát, apró rézmaradvánnyal. A leírt tárgyak biztos jelei a helyi rézmegmunkálásnak. A rézkori lelőhely jelentősége, hogy korábban az itt folytatott ásatások sem eredményeztek ilyen korú leleteket és a környékről sem ismerjük a Ludanice-kultúra lelőhelyét. Az eddig ismert 12 budapesti lelőhely sora ezzel újabbal bővült. A település szerkezetérc utaló adatokat a kis felület és a részleges feltárhatóság miatt nem sikerült szereznünk. Nyugati irányban úgy tűnik, a település szélét sikerült megtalálnunk, amit a domb hirtelen nvugati irányú emelkedésén kívül a korábban már említett nagyon vékony kultéirréteg is alátámaszt. Minden jel arra utal azonban, hogy a szomszédos telken, ahol hamarosan újabb leletmentés indul, folytatódik majd a rézkori település és további lehetőségünk nyílik az új lelőhely alaposabb megismerésére. at the same site did not yield finds from this period. This is the first evidence for the presence of the Ludanice culture in this closer region as well. Thus, the group of 12 sites known from Budapest as a whole has been enriched with one more site. The small surface and the limited excavation possibilities did not permit us to arrive at conclusions concerning settlement structure. It seems that we have found the western edge of the settlement, as shown by the abrupt rise of the hill and the above-mentioned very thin culture-bearing layer. Everything suggests, at the same time, that the Copper Age settlement extends into the neighboring lot, where the rescue excavations will be continued, and where we will have the opportunity to learn more about the new site.
