ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This Communication Aid is developed by the Northern Sydney Multicultural Access Project. It is an adaptation of the Communication Aid for Aged Day Care Services developed by the Cumberland / Prospect Multicultural Access Project. The Northern Sydney Multicultural Access Project would like to express our gratitude to Monika Latanik, Cumberland / Prospect Multicultural Access Project Office, for her generosity in sharing her resources and her support to this project. We would also like to extend our appreciation to the centre based respite and aged day care services that contributed to the development of the original Communication Aid. The Northern Sydney Multicultural Access Project would also like to extend our thanks to Northside Community Forum, particularly to Tim McGovern, Northern Sydney HACC Development Officer, and Fleur Childs, Administration Officer for their contribution and support in the development of this series of communication tool. Special acknowledgement is extended to the Advisory Committee members of the Northern Sydney Multicultural Access Project and the HACC services in the Northern Sydney Region for their contribution and support to the development of this resource. The Northern Sydney Multicultural Access Project is funded by the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care through the Home and Community Care Program, and is managed by the Multicultural Health Service, Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Health Service. INTRODUCTION As our culturally diverse population rapidly ages, it becomes increasingly important that our Home and Community Care (HACC) services have the capacity to provide a culturally responsive service. Effective cross cultural communication is one of the key, if not the most important, components in culturally responsive care. Whilst HACC services in the Northern Sydney Region are able to utilise face-to-face and telephone interpreters to communicate more effectively with people from culturally diverse backgrounds, everyday communication continues to be a challenge. This Communication Aid is a tool for service providers to communicate with individual service users from diverse cultural backgrounds. It is available in 31 languages. It includes three categories: 1. General; 2. Health / Personal Care & Aid; and 3. Activities / Food. We encourage services to add individualised items in each category to reflect the preferences of their service users. It is recommended an individualised Communication Aid be put together for each service user requiring communication assistance. It does not only help the service user to feel valued and respected, it will also provide them more opportunities to familiarise with the Kit and encourage them to initiate conversation and make their needs known to the service provider. It may also be a good way to involve the family and carer to add individualised items, such as photos of activities, food (or even recipes), etc. to the resource. It is important to note that this Communication Aid is not a replacement of professional interpreters. When there is a complex issue, service providers should arrange for a professional interpreter to assist with communication. To download this Communication Kit in different languages and to find out more about countries and languages, please go to: http://nsforum.org.au/nsmap/resources.htm The Northern Sydney Multicultural Access Project welcomes HACC and other services to adapt different parts of this Communication Kit to suit the needs of their services and service users.
