Mark Milewski Tunxis Community College Foundation and Advisory Board is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit tax-exempt organization led by an executive director and a talented volunteer board of directors comprised of business and community leaders, students, faculty, and alumni. The Foundation exists solely for charitable and educational purposes.

15 Academic Attire The colorful academic attire worn by the faculty and graduates has its origin in the European universities of the Middle Ages. The different types of gowns, the varying styles of caps, and the range of hood colors indicate different degrees and colleges. The gown for an Associate and a Bachelor has long pointed sleeves. That of a Master has an oblong sleeve, open at the waist. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut and the front part has an arc cutaway. The Doctor s gown has bell-shaped sleeves, with three bands of velvet on the sleeves and velvet facings down the front. Associates, Bachelors, and Masters all wear traditional Oxford or mortarboard design caps with silk tassels. The Doctor s cap is similar, except that the tassel is gold. Some colleges and universities use a soft velvet cap instead of the mortarboard of Doctors; this cap resembles a beret, and is usually black. The hood is worn open, hanging around the neck and down the back. The satin lining is in the colors of the college granting the degree. Velvet edging in varying widths shows the degree held, while the color shows the field of learning. Some of the more common colors to be seen on the hoods are the following: white for arts, letters and humanities; light blue for education; gold for science; olive for business; orange for engineering. The College Mace The Tunxis Community College Mace was first used in the 1973 Commencement ceremonies. Handcrafted in genuine Thailand teakwood, the Mace s design reflects clean, simple lines. The Mace is a traditional symbol which has figured in academic ceremonies for over 800 years. The use of a staff or rod as a symbol of authority can be traced far back into antiquity. Roman officials carried bundles of rods with an axehead protruding. Kings and emperors still carry sceptres, and bishops carry croziers. When universities came into existence in the Middle Ages, their officials were granted the right to carry a mace to show their authority. Continuing this tradition, the Tunxis Mace is carried by the Grand Marshal, who leads the procession and the recession.
