19 10. Answer the questions after reading the excerpt below. In international comparison natural gas consumption in Hungary is remarkably high. According to statistics the share of natural gas in total energy consumption is 39 percent. A higher ratio in Europe can only be found in the Netherlands, owing to their own natural gas extraction. Great Britain follows third, but the British can allow this to themselves, since they also have considerable natural gas reserves. In most of the European countries the share of natural gas is less than 25 percent or even less. For example in Poland it is only 11 percent. The reasons for this vary from country to country. In the case of Poland the share of coal is high, while in France nuclear power is used extensively, whereas in Norway, which also disposes over large gas reserves, cheap energy produced by hydro-power plants cuts the share of gas. In Hungary natural gas has been relatively cheap for many decades. In the previous decades the share of domestic gas production in consumption was much higher. In the 70-ies domestic natural gas accounted for around 50% of consumption, the other 50% being from Soviet import. The import of natural gas was financially very favourable, since the price was payable in rubels or often in goods (barter trade) instead of dollars. Therefore it was not particularly difficult to keep the price of natural gas quite low. The introduction of gas fired heating systems to an ever wider range of households can be dated to this period.
