21 10. After reading the following article on an environmental problem answer the questions. The Duna-Tisza köze was declared a semi-desert region in a long term prognosis by FAO. According to local experts predicting desert is an overstatement, but the signs of expanding steppes are apparent. The drought of the decades and the dropping groundwater table are facts. The lakes of the Kiskunság National Park dried out and the character of the landscape has changed. Due to the dry period of the last thirty years the character of the puszta has undoubtedly changed. The habitats in saline areas have started to perish, in certain lakes there has been no water for decades. One might ask what causes this process? The answer is quite complex: one of the culprits may be the changed weather associated with global warming, and the inappropriate farming practices and irresponsible environmental policy of neighbouring countries may be the other. The program for the afforestation of the Great Plain and the reparation of the watershed of the River Tisza requiring international co-operation was discontinued. A remedy to some of the problems would be the reversion to the traditional floodplain farming of the Carpathian Basin. On cultivated areas the ecological conditions of the landscape should fully be taken into account. The wide variety of only those crops should be grown which can flexibly adjust to the unfavourable changes of the climate.
