Saturday s game will be the firstever trip to FAU for the Lady Indians, and tipoff for the Sun Belt Conference matchup at FAU Arena is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., eastern time. Every ASU Lady Indian basketball game can be heard live on Earl FM in Northeast Arkansas. THE TEAMS: Arkansas State will take the court Saturday afternoon having won seven of its last ten games. Heading into the home stretch of the Sun Belt West Division race, the Lady Indians are 8-4 in SBC play, one-half game behind Arkansas-Little Rock, which stands at 8-3. The Lady Indians have six games remaining in the regular season. Florida Atlantic goes into Saturday afternoon having lost 10 of its last 11 games, and stand at 1-11 in Sun Belt East Division play. The Owls lone conference win was a road victory over Louisiana- Lafayette Feb. 2. In their last game, the Owls were defeated at Louisiana-Monroe Feb. 6. THE SERIES: Arkansas State leads the series 3-0. ASU opened Sun Belt Conference play this season with a win over the Owls in Jonesboro Dec. 18. In Florida Atlantic s first season as a member of the Sun Belt Conference last year, the Lady Indians defeated the Owls at the ASU Convocation Center. The Lady Indians finished the season at overall, and advanced to the second round of the WNIT. Now in her ninth season at Florida Atlantic, Chancellor Dugan is as head coach of the Owls, and overall. Last year, Dugan coached FAU to a 6-25 finish in the Owls first season as a member of the Sun Belt Conference. HOME SWEET HOME: The Lady Indians have won over 71 percent (84-33) of their games at the ASU Convocation Center under Head Coach Brian Boyer. Over the last four years, the Tribe has lost just 10 times on its home court, posting a winning percentage of.848 during that time (56-10). The Lady Indians have won 22 of the last 27 games at the ASU Convocation Center. In rare back-to-back home losses, the Lady Indians dropped consecutive home games this season, losing to Indiana State and Charlotte. The losses to Indiana State and Charlotte were the first consecutive losses at home since ASU lost to New Mexico State and Rice during the season. 3 lowing the Tribe s Nov. 13, victory over BYU, ASU is now 7-2 in home openers under Head Coach Brian Boyer, and has won four straight. SUCCESS IN SBC OPENERS: Since joining the Sun Belt Conference prior to the season, the Lady Indians are 11-6 all-time in SBC openers. Under Head Coach Brian Boyer, the Tribe is 6-3, with victories in five of the last six league debuts. Arkansas State has opened Sun Belt Conference play eight times at home, and boasts a 7-1 record in those games. ASU s only loss when opening the SBC season at home was a setback to Louisiana Tech in the season. SCOUTING FAU: Since ASU and FAU last met Dec. 18, FAU senior guard Shuteamia Brayboy has been dismissed from the Owl team for disciplinary reasons. Since then, sophomore guard Brittany Bowe has taken over as the season assist leader, handing out 62 on the year against 70 turnovers. Sophomore guard Carla Stubbs leads the Owls offensively, averaging 13.4 points per game. Freshman forward Jaimie Givens is also scoring in double figures, averaging 10.3 points per outing. Givens also leads the Owls on the boards, averaging 6.4 rebounds per game. As a team, the Owls are shooting 36.3 percent from the floor, 26.4 percent from three-point range and 59.8 percent from the free throw line. The Owls lead the Sun Belt Conference in blocked shots, averaging 4.3 per game. FINDING THE RIGHT MIX: Through 23 games this season, Lady Indian Head Coach Brian Boyer has used 11 different player combinations in ASU s starting lineup. Sophomore Jazmine Taylor is the only Lady Indian to have started every game, and the combination of Taylor, Ebonie Jefferson, Veronica Smith, Caroline Starr, and Shay Scott has been the most common mix, starting in 11 games. ALL THAT JAZ: Sophomore point guard Jazmine Taylor has surpassed her career scoring high in three of the Lady Indians last six games. Taylor scored in double figures for the first time in her career when she hit for 10 points in ASU s win over Middle Tennessee Jan. 14. Two games later, Taylor tossed in Taylor 11 points in ASU s win over Troy, and in the Lady Indians win over Florida International Jan. 23, Taylor torched the Panthers for 20 points. In addition to her point production against FIU, Taylor also added four assists, four rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocked shots in the game. FAU ROSTER ROUTE 66: In going 3-1 over its last four games, Arkansas State has scored at least 66 points in each of those contests, and has averaged 70.2 points over that span - well above it s season scoring average of 61.4 points. It s a trend that began when the Lady Indians tipped off Sun Belt Conference play in December against Florida Atlantic, as the Lady Indians have raised their scoring averaged almost five points per game to 65.8 points in league play. ASU sophomore guard Jazmine Taylor ranks second in the league at 2.23 steals per game, freshman guard Angie Criner is 11th at 1.73, and sophomore guard Ebonie Jefferson is 13th at DOUBLE DOUBLE-DOUBLE: When Shay Scott and Ebonie Jefferson both recorded a double-double Jan. 9 in ASU s win over North Texas, it marked the first time in over a year that two Lady Indians posted a double-double in the same game. The last time it happened, Rudy Sims and Adrianne Davie accomplished the feat in a win over ULL Dec. 16, Sims finished the game with a triple-double, chalking up 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, overshadowing the fifth doubledouble of the season by senior center Adrianne Davie, who finished the game with 26 points and 15 rebounds. GREAT SCOTT: Freshman forward Shay Scott has scored in double figures in 10 of the last 15 games for the Lady Indians, and has pulled down double-figure rebounds in six of ASU s last eight games. Against FIU Jan. 23, Scott grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds in the ASU win Scott over the Golden Panthers. Scott is second in the Sun Belt Conference in rebounding in league games with a 9.9 boards per game average. CRINER DELIVERS: Freshman guard Angie Criner delivered one of the Tribe s top performances of the season, and the best of her short career against Western Kentucky Jan. 26. Criner poured in a career-high 29 points in the game. Criner also set career highs for field goals made (10), field goal attempts (13), field Criner goal percentage (.769), free throws made (8), free throw attempts (9) and free throw percentage (.889) In her first start as a Lady Indian, Criner led all scorers with 17 points in ASU s victory over Alabama Nov. 18. Criner shot 6-of-11 from the field, 2- of-2 from behind the 3-point line, and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. She also added four steals and six rebounds to the box score in 25 minutes of play. Her hot shooting continued against Missouri State Nov. 20 as she hit 6-of-11 shots from the field, including a 2-of-3 effort from 3-point land. Criner led the Lady Indians with 14 points in the game. Schlup took a career-high 15 shots in the game, connecting on five, also a career best...sophomore guard Ebonie Jefferson dished out a career-high four assists in the game. JEFFERSON ON A ROLL: Sophomore guard Ebonie Jefferson continues to be an impact player as the season progresses. After scoring a career-high nine points in the season opener against South Dakota State, Jefferson matched the effort against Washington, then recorded her first career double-figure game with 13 points against Brigham Young. Jefferson outdid herself in back-to-back games against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Florida Atlantic, chalking up 16 points against UAPB and 20 in the league opener against FAU. Against UAPB, she narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds, along with three steals in just 20 minutes of action. Jefferson achieved Jefferson her first doubledouble Jan. 9 against North Texas, finishing the game with 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Jefferson has now scored 10 or more points in nine games this season. SHOOTING STARR: After hitting just three 3-pointers in ASU s first three games, junior guard Caroline Starr caught fire in the second half against Missouri State Nov. 20. Starr sank two from long range in the first minute of the second half, then added another later in the game to give the Lady Indians their first 20-point lead in the win. The Lady Indian lead swung from one point to three points over the next five minutes, but a bucket off of an offensive rebound from Jefferson put the Lady Indians up with just under eight minutes to play, and Arkansas State built a seven point, advantage with 6:30 to go when Smith scored on a breakaway off of a feed from sophomore point guard Jazmine Taylor. An inside bucket from freshman Angie Criner pushed the Lady Indian lead to with 4:36 to play, and South Alabama got a bucket from senior guard Jeanette Tucker with 4:23 remaining, but neither team scored again until the Lady Jags got a pair of free throws from senior guard Monique Jones to trim the ASU lead to with 1:41 to play. Arkansas State countered with a pair from the line by Jefferson at the 1:35 mark, then got a basket from Taylor to go up 67-58, and South Alabama did not score again. LOCK TO MISS SEASON: Forward Kelsey Lock, the only senior on the Lady Indian roster, will not play this season after suffering what proved to be a career-ending knee injury last year. It was the second major knee injury in as many years for the Republic, Mo. native. Lock averaged 8.7 points for the Lady Indians during the season, starting all 23 games in which she appeared. Last year, Lock averaged 1.7 points in nine appearances, including a season-high nine points in ASU s victory over Oklahoma State. As a coaching staff, we totally support Kelsey s decision, said ASU Head Coach Lock Brian Boyer. As much as we would love to have her competing this year for us, we ve also been beside her the last two years to see what she has gone through. This decision did not come as a surprise to us. Kelsey has done a great job of communicating with us throughout this process, and we feel that this is the best decision for her future. We are going to keep Kelsey involved with the program, added Boyer. She is still going to be a valuable part of this team from a leadership and maturity standpoint, but in the end, this is in the best interest for Kelsey physically. Hurst scored 16 points in the Lady Indians Hurst win over Harding in the Tribe s opening exhibition game. LADY INDIANS, LADY JAGS BRING SMILES TO HOSPITAL: MOBILE, Ala. ( ) Before facing each other on the court Wednesday night, members of the Arkansas State University and University of South Alabama women s basketball teams teamed up off the court for an afternoon visit to the USA Women s and Children s Hospital in Mobile, Ala. Arkansas State Head Coach Brian Boyer, along with Lady Indians Ashley Anderson, Brittney Hiles, Kayla Pospisil and Caroline Starr joined Lady Jaguar Head Coach Rick Pietri and players Susan Griffioen and Patriece Brunner for the visit to the hospital. The players and coaches delivered smiles and autographs to the children, visiting with patients and signing posters during the morning visit. We appreciate both South Alabama and the Sun Belt Conference for teaming up with us to make this visit come about, said Boyer. It is always fun when two teams who are competitors on the court come together, if only for a couple of hours, to spread some good. The teams visited the hospital as part of the Sun Belt Conference s Outreach Program. HOT SPRINGS NAMED FUTURE SITE FOR SBC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS: The Sun Belt Conference announced at its annual media days that Hot Springs, Ark., renowned for its appeal as a great tourist destination across the state and the country, was selected by the Sun Belt Conference Executive Committee as the host for league s annual men s and women s basketball tournaments from DUNN DEAL: The Arkansas State Lady Indian basketball program announced Nov. 14 that Kansas City, Mo., standout Elyseia Dunn has signed a national letter of intent to continue her basketball career at ASU. Dunn, a 6-1 forward, played three years at Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City, but will compete for Milestone Christian Academy in Kansas City during her senior season. Dunn averaged double figures in scoring each of her three seasons at Pembroke Hill, with a team-high average of 15.5 points per game last season. She has also averaged just over eight rebounds per game during her career, finishing as Pembroke s leading rebounder each of the last three years. As a staff, we are very excited about Elyseia, said ASU Head Coach Brian Boyer. In all of recruiting, you start out early with a tier of players and in all honesty, Elyseia was the number one recruit that we were after since her junior year. That s how highly we think of Elyseia. In a year where we have limited scholarships to give out, we shot as high as we could, added Boyer. And we are very grateful that Elyseia has committed to Arkansas State because this fills a huge need for our program. Dunn is a McDonald s All-American nominee, a Sporting News High School All-American Honorable Mention, and was invited to compete for the 2007 USA Athletes Team in Germany. Pembroke Hill won back-to-back state championships in 2005 and 2006, and Dunn was the most valuable player of the 2006 Class 3A Missouri LADY INDIAN BASKETBALL 8

9 State Championship Game. A twotime all-state selection, Dunn was also nominated for the Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year Award. She played for head coach Mark Spigarelli at Pembroke Hill, and will play for head coach Catrina Johnigan at Milestone Christian Academy. She was also a member of the AAU Wichita Spooks, playing under coach Kim Lassley. Dunn is the daughter of Donna Dunn, and has been trained and coached by Victor Williams. HENKE INKS WITH ASU: Arkansas State Head Coach Brian Boyer announced Monday that 6 4 center Linsay Henke has signed a national letter of intent to continue her basketball career at ASU. Henke, a senior at Blair Oaks High School in Jefferson City, Mo., is a two-time all conference and all district, and all state selection for the Lady Falcons. Henke averaged 12.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, and shot 60.3 percent from the field as a junior, leading Blair Oaks to a third-place finish in Class 3A. During the season, Henke averaged 10.6 points and 7.5 rebounds and led the Lady Falcons to the Class 3A state runner-up finish. She finished with 108 blocked shots in each of the last two seasons. Linsay is a great complement to our first sign, Elyseia Dunn, said Boyer. She has very good skills for her size, and she is very athletic for a 6 4 player. Certainly, a need that we had to address this year was adding more strength and more size on our front line, and in signing Linsay, we did that without sacrificing any speed and athletic ability. Linsay is the daughter of Tom and Kathy Henke, and plays for head coach Leroy Bernskoetter at Blair Oaks. She played AAU basketball for the Missouri Rage under coach Jim Deeken. WOLVES ON THE WAY: Arkansas State University s Mascot Selection Steering Committee voted unanimously Jan. 31 to recommend to Chancellor Robert L. Potts that Wolves be adopted as the new mascot for ASU athletic teams, with leeway for him to develop detailed aspects of the new mascot, including use of color as part of the name should it be deemed appropriate. The decision came at the end of a two-hour meeting during which the committee discussed the various mascot options and associated issues that might arise with each choice. The motion to recommend Wolves was discussed thoroughly before the vote. While some committee members expressed preference for Red Wolves, Bill Stanley of Jonesboro, who voiced the motion to recommend Wolves, said he preferred to give the chancellor and the creative team as much latitude as possible with implementation. Potts responded that the process has been very complex and that he would appreciate this latitude in the final stages of development while he consults with the creative design team and various university constituencies. Jim Pickens of Little Rock, an emeritus member of the Board of Trustees who served as committee chair, praised the committee members for their work and thanked the public for its input and involvement throughout the long process. Each member of the committee was honored by the confidence shown by Chancellor Potts, and we appreciate the resources the university provided us, he commented. I felt throughout the process that all constituency groups had an opportunity for input. The process was open and transparent throughout. Everyone should have pride in what was finally developed as a new product for Arkansas State University, because they were a part of the process. Earlier in the meeting, Jamie Skiles, principal and creative director of Phoenix Design Works, presented for committee review additional images portraying the three dominant themes that the committee had chosen at its Jan. 4 meeting. He emphasized that those images are preliminary creations that were drawn to give the committee an idea of how various themes might be represented. Skiles updated the committee on his creative thought process and the additional work he has done since the last meeting, including a review last night of the university s history as represented through its entire yearbook collection. He noted the importance of selecting a theme that will work well for recruiting, marketing, merchandising and other important aspects for many years to come. The discussion centered on Wolves and the various train or express themes that also had been considered. The various concepts associated with Ridge, such as Ridge Runners or Ridge Raiders, were voted out of further consideration early in the meeting. The committee s charge was to make a recommendation to the Chancellor and administration. 10 Head Coach Brian Boyer Through eight seasons as head coach at Arkansas State University, Brian Boyer s name has become synonymous with success and the women s basketball program. Entering his ninth season as head coach of the Lady Indians, Boyer has climbed to second place on the ASU career win chart with a record of Under Boyer s guidance, the Lady Indians have reached the Women s National Invitation Tournament four times, including three of the past four seasons. He led the Lady Indians to the Sun Belt East Division Championship, the program has produced 16 All-Sun Belt Conference players with Boyer at the helm, and Boyer was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year following the and seasons. His 66 career Sun Belt Conference victories heading into the season rank him sixth all-time in career conference wins. Last season, the Lady Indians finished 21-13, advanced to the second round of the WNIT before falling to eventual tournament runner-up Wisconsin and continued to build on their already-impressive home record with a 14-2 mark at the ASU Convocation Center. The Lady Indians posted home victories over NCAA Tournament participants Oklahoma State and Louisiana- Lafayette, Southeastern Conference member Alabama and WNIT participants South Dakota State and Murray State. In all, 14 of the Lady Indians 34 games during the season were against teams that played in the NCAA or WNIT tournaments. The Lady Indians also reached the 10-victory milestone quicker than any other team in ASU history, picking up their 10th win of the season Jan. 3, 2007, and their 21-win total equaled the highest in Boyer s eight seasons. Under Boyer s guidance, several individual records fell during the season as well. Seniors Adrianne Davie and Rudy Sims rewrote the Lady Indian record books, with Davie shattering the career blocked shots record with 132 and the career rebounding record with 1,147. Sims set a new mark in career assists with 548, and became the first ASU player in over a decade to record a triple-double when she scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out 10 assists in a overtime victory at Louisiana-Lafayette. Davie was named All-Sun Belt Conference for the fourth straight season, while Sims earned the honor for the third straight year. Davie also joined the ASU 1,000- point club, along with Sims and senior Amber Abraham. In the season, ASU put together a programbest 10-game Sun Belt Conference winning streak, part of an 11-game win streak that was the fourth longest in Lady Indian history. The Lady Indians finished the season overall and in second place in the Sun Belt East Division at 11-3, giving Boyer his first 20-win season as head coach. The Tribe advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT, defeating SEC powers Mississippi State and Arkansas along the way. The second round victory over Arkansas was played in front of a Convocation Center record crowd of 10, 892. 11 Boyer joined former Lady Indian coach Jerry Ann Winters as the only two ASU women s basketball coaches to win back to- back coach of the year honors. Davie, Sims and Carter all earned All-Sun Belt honors following the season, marking the first time in Lady Indian history that three players earned all-conference honors in a single season. The season culminated with the program s first-ever regular season conference championship and a return to the WNIT. The Lady Indians finished overall and 10-4 in league play, earning a share of the Sun Belt East division title as they posted one of the top turnarounds in Division I, picking up seven more wins than the previous season. ASU s 19 victories that season were the most since the season, sparked in part by the best start in ASU women s basketball history a seven-game win streak to open the season. The strong start carried over into Sun Belt play as the Lady Indians held the top spot in the East division from start to finish. Davie earned honorable mention all-conference honors as a true freshman, and Boyer was rewarded with his first conference Coach of the Year Award. The season capped a pair of rebuilding years and resulted in a strong finish and a trip to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. In his first season as head coach of the Lady Indians, Boyer led ASU to its first-ever Top 25 national ranking, 18 victories and a trip to the WNIT. The Tribe s 18 victories gave Boyer the most wins by a first-year coach at ASU since Sara Wooley won 19 games in her first season in The Lady Indians opened the season by winning 10 of their first 11 games, including road wins over Southern Miss and nationally-ranked Kansas, giving ASU a No. 25 ranking in the Associated Press poll the following week. The Tribe finished the season at overall, ending the year with the program s second straight invitation to the WNIT. Boyer came to ASU in 1995 spending four seasons as an assistant for former head coach Jeff Mittie, who is now the head coach at TCU. A graduate of Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Mo. with a bachelor's degree in education, Boyer was an assistant coach for the men's program for six seasons, including the last three, which he spent as an assistant with the women's program as well. As an assistant to the men's team, Missouri Western was an NCAA Division II Tournament participant five years (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1995) and won two conference championships. The team made the Sweet 16 in As a women's assistant, Boyer and Missouri Western made two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in 1995 and the Elite Eight the previous season. The team went 31-3 in 1995 and made it to the Final Eight of the national tournament. It also went undefeated through its MIAA schedule at In 1994, the team finished third in the nation, losing in a national semifinal contest and finishing with a 29-3 overall mark. In his four seasons at Arkansas State as an assistant coach, Boyer and the Lady Indians earned a mark. The team went with a trip to the Women's NIT. In the process, ASU earned wins over nationally- ranked Virginia and Kansas. The Lady Indians won 20 games in back-to-back seasons in the and seasons. The 1997 team opened the season with a victory over nationally-ranked Illinois and had a 12-game winning streak during the season, the second longest in school history.
